Let's Talk About Gamestop (and the beauty of a 3DS)

I got a 3DS, wow, yay, fab! BUT it was quite an ordeal to obtain it.

FIRST: Gamestop is such a ripoff, what the heck. My DSi was in practically perfect condition and it had everything it needed. I got 50 dollars for it. I also traded in 4 games (all of which cost at least 20 dollars each) and got 5 dollars for all of them. WHY. I really wish Gamestop didn't have a monopoly on the entire trading in games thing, because this is getting ridiculous.

SECOND: This is a story, since it can't really be told any other way.
There are two Gamestops in my area (one in a mall, the other in a plaza). I went with my sister (who is 19) to the one in the mall (since we needed to go there anyways). I go in, the guy asks if I need anything, I tell him I'm trading things in. He waits until I get to the counter to tell me: "Sorry, you can't trade anything in. If you're under 18, you need a parent or guardian, since technically it belongs to them." ......OKAY, WHATEVER, I GOT MY SIS. I say that's she's over 18, and he tells me that no, since I'M the one who came in with the stuff, that means it my stuff (even though he just said that it's actually my parent's stuff. okay.) So essentially, if she had been the one to come in the store, it would be no problem, whether or not she bought what's being traded in herself.
So to bypass this nonsense, we go to the other Gamestop (which is so out of the way). We assume that the people working here will not be as ridiculous about this policy, but my sister takes charge of holding the stuff, just in case. But she has absolutely no idea what she's talking about, and the fact that I'm handing her money makes it even more obvious that this is all me. Clearly she's not my mother either, since she's only 4 years older than me and probably looks like less. The guy knows too, since he keeps saying "you guys". BUT he is cool and rolls w/ it. PROBLEM SOLVED, after way too much effort.

The result of this nonsense: A SHINY NEW 3DS. IT'S SO PRETTY. IT'S BEAUTIFUL.
I don't know why I ever had doubts about it. I would get this things even if I had to pay the full 170 for it. If anyone wants to know if it's worth it: Yes. Completely, totally worth it. Even if I didn't have any DS games, the AR games, free games/apps (Face Raiders, Pokédex 3D) and everything else that's included make it ridiculously fun. I've probably spent more time on the built in features than playing any games (on games cards) on it. The interent browser is also a big step up from the DSi's, running much more smoothly and not messing with formatting of pages as much. The DSiWare Shop (is that what it's called, I don't know) also loads much better and is set up nicer. I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO SAY? IT'S ALL GREAT. I LOVE IT. I'M IN LOVE.

The moral of the story: Gamestop sucks, 3DS is lovely.
My friend code is 2793 - 1259 - 2985, if you have a 3DS you should be my friend?! Yes. This is a good plan. Okay.

You can also trade in games via Amazon for an Amazon gift card in the amount of your trade-in.

GOOD GAMESTOPS??? YOU GUYS ARE LUCKY
honestly, the ones around me are only good for buying used games (and the only places I could find gamecube games)

@Snoozle yeah, I think a lot of the appeal comes from the convenience (or at least how that market themselves as being convenient). I only trade in games that I absolutely know that I don't want to play again..since I don't always make the best decisions in buying them. Also that is a great group! Why did I not know about it

If your DSi was in perfect condition, you should have gotten more for it, yes. Not much more, however - GameStop is a retailer, after all, they can't give you the actual value of the merchandise, they still have to make something off of it.

As to the clerks following corporate policies regarding trade-ins, they were just doing their jobs. It might seem "ridiculous" to you, but asking them to risk unemployment for your trade-in would be even more so.
