Questions to those who are familiar with the Digimon fandom

If there's one thing I am curious about, it's the Digimon fandom, because one complaint I have seen among the fans of Pokemon is that they accused the new Pokemon looking like Digimon (which doesn't hold a lot of weight). So, if you are familiar with the Digimon fandom, these are some of the questions I would like to ask, so if you can answer them, post it in the comments section to quench my curiosity.

  • Does Digimon fans generally complain about the new Digimon?
  • Do they think there are too much Digimon?
  • Do they like rehashes of old Digimon as new Digimon (Greymon comes to mind)?
  • Does Digimon fans think the new Digimon look like Pokemon?
  • What do the fans generally think of the grosser side of the Digimon roster (like Numemon and Sukamon)?
  • Do they revere the games as much as the anime?
  • Are fans generally satisfied with the newer installments of the anime?
  • Do they have some grudge against Pokemon as a franchise?
  • Does Digimon fans like to complain about even the tiniest things?
  • Do they like comparing Digimon to Pokemon (and imagine they will slaughter the Pokemon)?
  • Have they ever thought of comparing Digimon to Yugioh in battles?
  • Do they generally like the Digimon games?
  • Is the fan demography as diverse as Pokemon's?

If you have anything else interesting to point out that is happening among the Digimon fandom, please add those too.

Thanks for reading.

I'm pretty sure the Digimon fandom just bitches about Plot/Characters/Shipping more than the Digimon themselves.

Funny you ask that, because some Pokemon fans think the new Pokemon look like Digimon.

Yeah - it's why I created this inquiry blog in the first place.

    Thanks for reading.

Starters I'm a Digimon fan aswell as a Pokmon fan but I'm a very casual Digimon fan.

I watched season 1 and 2. Got casual after that and watched on and off. Quit when the people started turning into Digimon.
Never bought the games back then.

Came back when I saw a import Digimon world Dusk DS game on the shelf of gametraders. Bought that and kind of got back in. I started watching Digimon data squad when it reached Australia. Bought all the DVD's of that series. None of the earlier seasons are on DVD making it hard to do any catch up. Also any Digimon game I got for the DS was all import because the situation of Digimon is that bad in Australia that they don't release the games anymore.

We were lucky to get DVD's.

There's no toys or anything else in Australia Digimon wise.

When I came back I was a bit surprised to see there were 800 plus Digimon to start with. More overwhelming than Pokemon especially all the branch Digivolutions. However you never see all 800 in the games and I notice on game forums you get people not happy due to a favourite Digimon not being in said game.

I don't hang around the fandom much if at all. However I have seen bits and pieces every now and then usually in video comments on video sites.

On a few videos I like to search online comments ranging from the original series is the best and the new series is the worst to "why does the new Agumon in data squad sound so weird, the 1st season Agumon sounded better" despite it being a completely different agumon. Then there's the japanese version is better stuff. I couldn't stop laughing at the one person I did see say the new Digimon look weird and that they're starting to look like Pokemon.

I have to agree that the new ones look weird since I'm still adjusting but they don't look anything like Pokemon.

Though yeah that's what I've seen. Little bits and pieces here and there but really all fandoms are alike.

I prefer to stay casual with Digimon. I don't want to get involved with the fandom. Video comments seem to give me enough of a clue of what I could end up dealing with if I were to ever get involved with the fandom. I watch when I feel like and play when I feel like. Enjoy the show alot that way even if I never end up memorising the 800 plus Digimon.=P

Kind of wish I'd stayed that way with Pokemon. Getting involved with the Pokemon fandom is one of my worst mistakes.=/

First of all, thank you for providing me this information. It's not a lot, but at least it's something. Again, thank you for knowing this and telling me.

Yeah...it's like a lot of people who thought the first two (or maybe three) seasons were the best, but the fourth was where the interest had waned. As for me, I thought the first two seasons were great to watch.

Also any Digimon game I got for the DS was all import because the situation of Digimon is that bad in Australia that they don't release the games anymore.

So Australia hardly got Digimon stuff? Understandable.

Haha! Looks like Digimon fans are also never satisfied with the choices of the developers! I had the impression that the Digimon fans lived in a perfect world.

On a few videos I like to search online comments ranging from the original series is the best and the new series is the worst to "why does the new Agumon in data squad sound so weird, the 1st season Agumon sounded better" despite it being a completely different agumon. Looks like the common complaint the anime fans often convey: Japanese always better. Another complaint sounds like nostalgia. I found it funny when Digimon fans think new Digimon look like Pokemon, because the complexity of Digimon designs discouraged this impression, so I think they have some funny ideas.

Though yeah that's what I've seen. Little bits and pieces here and there but really all fandoms are alike.
From what you told me, I agree.

I prefer to stay casual with Digimon. I don't want to get involved with the fandom. Video comments seem to give me enough of a clue of what I could end up dealing with if I were to ever get involved with the fandom. I watch when I feel like and play when I feel like. Seems like the Digimon fans have complaints as bad as the Pokemon fans (though I felt the Pokemon fans have it better, as I had observed). I think I may have overestimated the satisfaction of Digimon fans.

    Thanks for the information.

    • Does Digimon fans generally complain about the new Digimon?

Just like what happens in any fandom, there are people who dislike the new Digimon.

    • Do they think there are too much Digimon?

      Nah.

    • Do they like rehashes of old Digimon as new Digimon (Greymon comes to mind)?

Mm, that's a tough one. The community I belong to seems to welcome all new Digimon, rehash or not, but I can believe that some fans might dislike that, just like some Pokémon fan dislike remakes, but most bond up to them anyway.

    • Does Digimon fans think the new Digimon look like Pokemon?

Not really. Some Pokémon and Digimon only look alike because they share the same origin, after all.

    • What do the fans generally think of the grosser side of the Digimon roster (like Numemon and Sukamon)?

They are usually regarded as comic reliefs, and while they wouldn't prefer it over, say Wargreymon, they tend to be those everyone likes, but no one (or very few) love.

    • Do they revere the games as much as the anime?

No. The games are more of complement, especially since, let's be honest, plenty of them suck.

    • Are fans generally satisfied with the newer installments of the anime?

Yes. Xros Wars was like a blessing for them.

    • Do they have some grudge against Pokemon as a franchise?

I have seem some who don't like how Pokémon is more popular, especially since many people wrongly regard Digimon as a rip-off.

    • Does Digimon fans like to complain about even the tiniest things?

Again, like in all fandoms, there are black sheeps. Most don't.

    • Do they like comparing Digimon to Pokemon (and imagine they will slaughter the Pokemon)?

There may be some tension at times, but most disputes are friendly. Most Digimon fans seem to be also Pokémon fans, to a degree.

    • Have they ever thought of comparing Digimon to Yugioh in battles?

      That I know of, no.

    • Do they generally like the Digimon games?

The ones that don't suck, yes.

    • Is the fan demography as diverse as Pokemon's?

In the community I belong to, not really. But then again, in Portugal (the community is Portuguese) very few people actually like these kind of fandoms, Pokémon included.

•Does Digimon fans generally complain about the new Digimon?
-Depends on the kind, but I can definately imagine that.

•Do they think there are too much Digimon?
-Not from what I know of.

•Do they like rehashes of old Digimon as new Digimon (Greymon comes to mind)?
-Depends on preference. Some people prefer the old fashioned Greymon, or some people prefer the tougher looking GeoGreymon, or some people prefer the more theropod-like Xros Wars Greymon, but again, it depends on preference.

•Does Digimon fans think the new Digimon look like Pokemon?
-Actually something I'd ask myself when it comes to my Digimon designs. But in terms of official Digimon though, HARDLY.

•What do the fans generally think of the grosser side of the Digimon roster (like Numemon and Sukamon)?
-Not sure. I always imagine absolute hate beyond all reason for these Digimon.

•Do they revere the games as much as the anime?
-Depends on the game in question, as most of them SUCK and lack the production values the anime has.

•Are fans generally satisfied with the newer installments of the anime?
-Depends on how much nostalgia goes through the brain.

•Do they have some grudge against Pokemon as a franchise?
-I can imagine, but it kind of depends on weither or not you prefer either Anime or Video Games. Those who prefer Anime have nothing to worry about, but those who prefer games would more likely have a grudge in some way. More work and effort goes into the Pokemon mainseries than the Digimon World games. After all, Pokemon is more of a video game franchise than Digimon is in terms of where the quality and effort is found.

•Does Digimon fans like to complain about even the tiniest things?
-The Goggles. Marcus got so much unnecessary hate because he lacked them. I found the fact he and the male player character of Digimon World DS lacking them as refreshing for once.

•Do they like comparing Digimon to Pokemon (and imagine they will slaughter the Pokemon)?
-I don't know where exactly the idea of Digimon brutally beating up Pokemon came from, but I can imagine it came from the differences in the moves: Most Digimon have absolutely destructive moves as Mega Levels, where those same kinds of moves are limited to the 680 BST Legendaries in Pokemon, but even then, the moves Pokemon have tend to be nowhere near as destructive.

•Have they ever thought of comparing Digimon to Yugioh in battles?
-Not that I know of. I've seen Pokemon compared to Yu-Gi-Oh, but never Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh.

•Do they generally like the Digimon games?
-Not by a lot, as all I hear most of the time is the Anime, which is no different here as well since Xros Wars is all I here about here. I'm like the only one here who'd actually prefer to talk about the games instead.

•Is the fan demography as diverse as Pokemon's?
-This one I'll never be able to answer since I never see a lot of Digimon fans in person.

one thing i wish Digimon games had was a more effective online battling system, or a more balanced/less confusing battle system in general. Both may be due to leaning more towards pokemon fandom than digimon, and not putting as much effort into understanding, but i digress. I personally liked every previous season better than the concept of Xcros wars (reminds me too much of megazords, and i have bad power rangers-related memories), but i suspect i wouldn't mind it once i saw it. One question i'd like answered is: "Is there a Digimon battle Metagame?" And if so, "How does it function?" I'd imagine Dusk/Dawn made it slightly easier, with some of the move-learning/levelling changes, but anyways...
