Oh....FF.NET

Just a pet peeve blog, feel free to ignore.

So, I got bored and went to ff.net, why does it seem like good fanfiction stories are hard to find? I just searched some Drayden or Iris stories and all I got were poorly contrived, short, shoddy messes with bad grammar and shipping fics. I legit can't see to find many "good" fanfiction stories. I just wonder if the authors put any true effort into writing those things.(700-1000 word count for two chapters most likely means a piece of rushed crap for example.) I was looking for other expansion stories to take a look at since I write one and post both here on Bulbagarden, ff.net and Serebii. I was interested in seeing how other people expand upon the lives of canon characters in-game(or anime.)

Unfortunately most fanfiction stories I've seen in that regard are simply the pure definition of bad!fics, grammar, length, OOC characterization, pacing, tone there's little of any of that in the well done department. I gotta admit, it is kinda annoying because I legit actually wanted to see a non cracky and good expansion fic. on quite a few characters in-game.(Burgh, Elesa, Clay, etc.) :| Finding a good story on them is pretty much little more than a pipe dream however. While I know I should complain about length, given length is subjective and it's very much possible to write good short chapters most none of them simply are not good....ever.

I have run into some authors on Serebii and Bulbagarden with a knack for writing not-so sizable chapters that convey everything exceptionally but they don't write canon stories and are few and far between in numbers. Though I am happy to find quite a decently-sized number of stories I'm genuinely interested in and follow regularly on these forums, so there's a silver-lining there.

On another note I've had a weird influx of writing passion lately, mostly just been reading books on producing better flowing dialogue.

I'm glad to at least be able to find some good fanart on Burgh, Roxie and Elesa(I'm a huge fan of both of these gym leaders) and it's always nice to see cool fanart of them. Good fanfiction seems to be in rare form these days. I’ve noticed some of the most terrible stories on ff.net get more reviews than really good stories, it is a bit disheartening when I see a very good story get little or no critic while something outta the trash bin becomes a hit.

On another 'nother note, so much fail on this site.

This was something that kind of shocked me when I stepped into the fanfic world for the first time. Having gone on nothing but real-life books, I had expected every chapter of every fic to be written like that- at least a few pages, spell checked and grammatically correct. Maybe ten per chapter or so...

There's forums that enforce a min length and stuff like that, but perhaps one of the biggest questions (one that I eventually stopped asking because years of being on the Internet got me to accept it as the new norm) I had was why this kind of length wasn't the default.

@33Whimsicott33; I know, I mean it's just sometimes I wonder, "ARE YOU EVEN TRYING!?" Though when you say length, what length are you referring to? The whiny short one I was complaining about?

Just post lengths in general. Some of the higher-standard forums enforce a minimum length of a fan fic post as a quality check.

Firstly, entering ff.net directs me to pantsu.net (an ecchi otaku website), for whatever reason. So I am going to guess you meant fanfiction.net based on context.

If there is one thing I am surprised to see on fanfiction.net, it's the amount of Calvin and Hobbes fics there. I am not sure how good they are, but for a comic that has long retired, there sure are so many stories about a boy and his tiger.

    Thanks for reading.

I think it's kinda accepted that more than half of the fanfiction on FF.NET are not that good.
