Tablet? Netbook? Notebook?

I think I'm so selling my old laptop now. It's literally falling apart - creaky hinges, faded out keyboard labels, light leakage on screen edges, less than 1.5 hours of battery life, unreliable Wi-Fi, toasty CPU... I'm gonna sell it anytime soon! (And I checked and it seems to be worth less than $100. AAAAARGH!

Now, what's a good choice for me when it comes to portable computing? (Having it within $700 range is a good idea, but I might end up being strapped for cash. Again.)

Depends. What do you intend on using it for?

Whatever you do, do NOT get a Mac.

As for laptops, you should probably get an Asus.

Whatever it is, anything that's not a Mac (too expensive and limiting).

The laptop I use has a lot of those problems :/
I'm hoping to get a job so I can replace it this summer.
(I don't really use it anymore since I have a desktop to use)
I just need something for school.

    @double trouble!
if you need something for school, i would lean away from tablets. I bought a cheesy $150 (clearance sale) netbook, kicked off windows and put ubuntu on it, and it sufficiently worked for all of my school stuff. granted i also have a desktop with me, so maybe that made it easier, but still. writing papers, etc. can easily be done on a netbook if you want to go cheap (obviously a notebook could work, too). Either way, if you are using the college's internet, I would suggest installing some version of linux to dual boot it with. Use linux for the internet whenever possible. College internet is swarming with viruses

    ^ I don't like tablets anyway.
And yeah, Macs are ridiculously expensive.

I think I might just settle with lots and lots of protection. Ahahahaha... It's easy to get protection for your PC, for free, legally. XD

I think I'll be bringing it out very often. And yet I need power.

Agreed with all that said this. The ONLY situation I could see using a Mac as the right choice is if you need to constantly be on the internet and programs at the same time (internet on windows= virus hog, people still aren't making programs compatible with linux).

Protection= Linux (; dual boot ftw

@BaileyPlaysPokemon Being smart about things and having proper protection goes a long way in securing any PC. XD

    Windows tablet suck, right?

@Plushie true that. I just have bad luck with windows viruses, even with the PAID version of antivir **facepalm** thus, I am a little bit bitter q:

@BaileyPlaysPokemon Get Microsoft Security Essentials, also known as that other good Microsoft product, right next to Windows 7. Tends to catch stuff.

@Plushie hm, I may look into it, but i pretty much only browse on linux now.

It depends on what you want the computer to be used for and also sometimes a Notebook can be called a Laptop...So im not sure what your looking for..but here what I think personally for performous(< cant spell that)

Most new and good Laptop or Notebook PC's that I find at places like BestBuy or Wal-Mart cost around $350...Most Tablets computers can get really expensive(remember how much that iPad costs?Apple - iPad 2 - Now with iOS 5 and iCloud. )like $400-$800 usually so If you dont have alot of money like you say,I would get a Netbook or Notebook(Laptop) computer...much cheaper and you can upgrade them later too

Notebooks that I found usually have:
-OS(operating system) is eather Windows Vista or 7
-have 2-4 GB of RAM in them, few may have 1 GB in them(mostly Netbooks),Idea is to look for some that can be upgraded to 8-16 GB of RAM because you know how fast tech can upgrade
-100-350 GB of Hard Drive/Disk(there both the same)space or if you want to get a larger hard drive, a usuall 2TB drive cost around $40-80 but you might notice that you might need to buy a few...
-some have 64 bit or x64 processers(means it have two or more processers in it)...but can make the computer really expensive but is really fast..A Notebook that has a 32 bit or called x86 processer that has a speed or 2.5-3.5 GHz would be cheap....or a 64 bit that has around a 2.5-3 GHz speed...

What I told you is the three main things to look for when you want speed,a Netbook can be really cheap, costs around $100-$200 like the DS,DSi,or the 3DS systems but you might not be able to upgrade them that much or not at all plus Netbooks dont have CD,DVD,BR(Blue- Ray)Drives,so everything has to be USB...

Tablets are ok if you go alot but cant upgrade and VERY expensive.

Netbooks are fine and very cheap but great if you have Internet but most cant be upgraded and dont have a drive to play PC games or movies

Notebooks or Laptops can be upgrade alot, all have some kind of a drive to play movies or PC games, medium price range(starts around $200 to $400) but some can be hard to put in that backpack...

    Hope that helps...
