But a lot of browsers (IE, what I have at school) do not support APNGs.

A better analogy might be converting H.264 video files to MPEG-4 video.

Even the highest quality gifs aren't as good of quality as APNG are. Not to mention they're MASSIVE compared to APNG. You've already been told "no" by the Archives Liaison. Why are you going through with this anyway? You're only going to get in trouble for insubordination.

I am NOT going to upload stuff without permission. That's one of the things that we all know right now.

Seriously, though, bad ideas are bad. And I think I need to say that. To be fair, it's not exactly a "never", so I'm downloading things anyway. Just in case... Heck, I am holding out some hope that things will change anyway. If you think GIF quality is always inferior to APNG in all cases, think again - animated sprites never exceed GIF limits anyway. GIF by itself is lossless - this needs a lot of reminding to get things straight. It's the colour palette limitation that gets in the way for high-colour and up images - for indexed images, there's no loss of quality. At all. Full stop. If there is, your converter is doing things wrong.
