You only use 10% of your brain?

I think what most people are mistaking this for is the fact that only about 10% of your neurons are firing at any given time, which is what I thought when I first saw that quote, at any rate.

However, that does not mean that 100% of your neurons aren't used eventually.

In fact, according to a friend of mine, if 100% of your neurons are firing all at the same time, it actually means you're having a seizure.

    I think it actually refers to something else. I read somewhere that we do only use a small percentage of out brains for one thing, but you use the others for other things.

    Example:
    10% of brain for reading.
    10% of brain for walking.
    20% of brain for eating.
    50% of brain for breathing.
    10% of brain for talking.

    OR at least, that's what I thought.

    You hardly need 50% of your brain power for breathing when its just a reflex most of the time, and is controlled by a very primitive part of your brain.

    The 10% thing doesn't exist as far as I can tell.
