Just because Serena is cute and has a short skirt and seems girly like Dawn, does not mean she will be exactly like Dawn. Where the hell do you get that from? Would you stop judging her before she even debuts? How about treating her as Serena, and not saying 'she will probably have a team full of cute Pokemon and will be like Dawn, just look at her, she has short skirt and everything'. That is an incredibly shallow way of viewing things. You're declaring her as a bland Dawn clone before she even makes her debut. And that is incredibly unfair.

Also, Dawn's team wasn't solely cute. Her Quilava is dependable, Togekiss and Mamoswine are her powerhouses, leaving only Piplup, Buneary and Pachirisu as cute Pokémon. And let's not forget that Piplup is no Oshawott, he's actually strong. So yeah, a cute girl like Dawn can get something not as cute as Mamoswine. Shocker right?

Actually her Cyndaquil's evolution was a last minute addition, it was still cute for 99% of its DP screentime and Togekiss was graceful and raised by a princess of all people and cute. Oshawott actually is stronger than Piplup imo. :P

    HGSS. And it actually battled.

    Except it was actually strong.

Do you have a problem with cute Pokémon? Because I only have a problem with Pokémon who are there for the sake of looking cute, like Oshawott, whose last major win was against Clay. All of his development episodes were a waste of time and space, in my opinion.

Pochama was shown to be strong on a consistent level.

    Mijumaru hasn't.

We probably wouldn't get the comparisons at all. Cause she'd be something quite different in physical appearance.

Mijumaru has shown to be strong consistently, the only disappointing loss being against a Haderia and solely to show off Cheren's abilities and talents. It did weaken a Sanzandora in the league immensely, compared to fearing taking on a Yanappu in early BW. Pochama has had its share of lukewarm performances at times, imo. Plus you have to take into account Oshawott is trained for battling and Piplup was for elegance and contest, so they're probably a curve in strength.

Is this negative judgment at all based on the idea that being feminine is bad? Seems full of Unfortunate Implications, doesn't it?

There is an obvious assumption here based on the past.

The writers either do a snarky tsundre character like Misty/Iris who argue with Ash, or they do the girly beginning female trainer who Ash mentors like May/Dawn. Just judging by Serena being a game protagonist and Ash looking mature she's obviously going to go the May/Dawn route.

Serena is most definitely going to be similar to Dawn who in turn had similarities to May. This is the Pokemon anime, the writers aren't going to create some new complex personality of a token game companion who will only be here for the next 3-4 years.

She isn't a player character, though (that is my main issue with they choosing Serena over Shauna).

I wouldn't mind Serena having cute Pokémon, as long as she evolve them. It is not like fully evolved Pokémon can't be cute.

This fandom is extremely shallow. Similar looks and slightly similar attitudes and roles will make them say the dumbest things like calling people clones and saying the writers were trying to make failed clones of popular characters.

I agree with you, Tsutarga. It's WAY too soon to judge Serena. We have little to no info on her to begin with. Just because she wears a skirt and is pretty doesn't mean she's an automatic Dawn clone (not that I disliked Dawn, mind you, but May was far better imo). I mean, if we take her game personality into play (as a rival), she seems to be an ambitious person who wants to get stronger and achieve her goal. I think anime Serena will probably at least borrow some traits from that. So, yeah, I wholeheartedly agree with you. While I highly doubt she'll take the path of Misty/Iris (god forbid), I don't think she'll be an automatic Dawn duplicate, either. It's too soon to judge her. Probably the next trailer for the anime (if she's in it) will paint a better picture of who she is. But you're right.

That's not really true at all, May had some girly moments in the show but for the most part she wasn't that girly at all. She definitely was more intense, had a huge love for food, more laid-back, a bit less emotionally prone to crying/sadness, she didn't mind calling out Ash at times, her character development was done very well, her Pokemon for the most part and battling style had more fire and intensity. Dawn was much more girly, a bit vapid at times as well. But Misty was definitely girly as well, a tsundere and preferred outer appearances to inner appearances, remember the Vulpix episode? Iris hates girly mannerisms and clothes and is definitely more snarky and athletic.

    Ash/Iris = Brother/Sister
    Ash/Misty = Couple
Ash/May = Mentor ship. Her whole reason for losing to Soledad is because her battle style is too similar to Ash's.
    Ash/Dawn = BFFs?

@Tsutarja; I understand your annoyance with people being hasty, but you have to admit with Kalos's emphasis on beauty, style and flair along with the new customization feature and a bishoujo-ish new Pokegirl, some people do have slightly valid reasons to think she might(might, not will) be similar to the blue-haired, Coordinator with a love for girly things from DP.

    @Gotpika;

I understand your fears, what i don't understand is people automatically jumping on conclusions. feel free to hate or dislike her if she becomes what you fear she'll become, but for now, let us all speculate what we would want her to be like, not what we fear she'll become. it automatically results in slight negativity. Instead of speculating positive stuff, we're speculating the awful things that might occur if she even slightly resembles Dawn, like she'll be boring and stuff.

Well and also since ther seems to be heavy implications that Kalos seems to be based in France...
and with Serena being a girl from the region, im sure many people see her as a French lady. How she dresses does really seemed to be fashion focused and France is FAMOUS for fashion. so it seems there are some Unfrotunate implications that comes with all of the French Steriotypes that some people are seeing in Serena by how she looks and the impying that Kalos is in France. I do like Serena's design and am excited for her to join Ash.

Before Dawn was introduced people used to consider May to be very girly. You can even dig up the old threads posted when AG was originally airing and everyone refers to May as, "the girly girl." The ironic part of it all is how May really wasn't that girly, but people saw her that way compared to Misty. Its only when Dawn was introduced with all her love for fashion/dresses, etc. that people realized May wasn't as girly as they thought.

You people weren't in the fandom when AG was originally airing like I was, at least not on the online forums. Everyone saw Misty as this tomboyish tsundre character while May was the very girly fanservice character. Funny how fandom opinion has changed because that's what it was like 10 years ago.

No offense but that seems to be like narrow minded way of evaluating things making gross generalization.
Nor i don't think its fair to subject girls to stereotypical trope archetypes when each showed several unique virtues to them being independent characters from one to another.

As far as Iris go aside from being cynical liking to tease Ash and fearing particular type she is nothing like Misty is in personality aspect. Misty was hotheaded, brash, deep romantic, passionate about specific type and cute things, liking to glam herself up being interested in girly things, shy and insecure fearing of many things regardless of tough exterior along with having tendency to take initiative to move things forward and be in charge solving issues on her own.

Iris is vastly different from how Misty was being more wild and hyperactive, intrusive liking to hug pokemon, un trusty and shy toward humans being more oriented toward nature and paranormal and sporting liking to climb on trees, swing on vines etc..

Same applies to May and Dawn. May aside from being girly also showed to be optimistic and bubbly, having big fondness for food, tending to explode when others joke with her or stole her things along with having tendency to break under pressure sometime.

While Dawn was more interested in fashion, cloth design, appearance being more optimistic and girly. Overly confident and presurred at times due to big expectations her mother and environment impressed on her.

@Tsutarja:I agree. People tend to be sometimes incredibly deprecative and full of prejudices about something forming negative view before even giving it chance and see how it would look like in show. I can understand fearing of Serena not being different from some other character they didn't liked that much, but to completely judge her on appearance and how she looks before even making debut in anime is completely unfair and simply wrong.

Personally if i would to complain about something first i would wait and see in what way character is going to be handled and presented before making judgment and if my fears, presumptions were justified and grounded.
