Did the makers of the anime seriously say the reason why they have female companions is for sight appeal? Cause seriously I know different culture but that seriously is no excuse. They seriously don't have them so Ash has more people to interact with regularly. Not for the Smurfette principle? Sight appeal seriously. Did they actually ADMIT TO THAT SERIOUSLY?

Seriously? #Seriously

The quote is from this interview with Masamitsu Hidaka:

So then I said, “Why can’t you just ditch Brock, have Ash, have Misty, and then bring in a new boy? That would be switching up things instead of having a new girl.” His following answers made me laugh my head off I had to pick it up off the floor and reattach it. He stated that they like to switch up the girls because it gives the boys some new eye candy every once in a while. He also said girls are more customizable and you can change their outfits, like when they are in their bathing suits (yes, he specifically said that). He also said Ken Sugimori designs a new girl with each generation and that gives them another excuse to switch the girl, though I reminded him that there is also a new boy with each generation too, and it wouldn’t hurt to use them.

There are probably multiple reasons. That just being one.

Anyway, fan service is nothing new.
Or did you think Misty's super short shorts were for mobility?

Wow, I can't believe they actually admitted to it. Then again wasn't that quote years ago? During AG or during DP? One of the reasons why I didn't care for Dawn heavily is because she had a bland papercut personality, was horribly submissive, overly feminine, cried a lot, Dawn was associated almost completely with "cute"(Check out her whole team except Mamoswine.), her clothes, her obsession with her hair, and on top of that she almost seemed to exist only to be put in cute dresses and swimsuits most of the time.

If you have the main female of Pokemon being established as dainty and doormatty and likely existing mainly for fanservice appeal. Then we have a massive problem. That's why I like and care about the other Pokegirls girl more in personality, there's something I just like about females in animation who don't take shit from anyone. She can have emotions, yeah, but overdoing things reduces her to a mere collection of tropes rather than a character in her own right, it's especially taxing when she doesn't have a standout personality to begin with. At least when May and Misty were main characters they actually had something I could get invested in and traces of a personalities, despite their fanservice appealing traits(May's chest, Misty's daisy dukes, etc.) and weren't reduced to a group of tropes with little basis of a character.

Hell, May is my favorite Pokegirl but fanservice isn't her end all be-all. She has muscular and "manly" Pokemon like Blaziken, Venusaur, Munchlax, Wartortle, etc. She has her cute Skitty but that thing got ditched after the Hoenn Saga and never felt like a large part of the power of her team. Dawn's whole team is the epitome of traditional cuteness, everything except Mamoswine. May is a Coordinator but battles harder in Contest and has more "vicious" combinations in battle. Her Pokemon are all fighters, she didn't have to conform to the typical and norm that Dawn did on what a "girl" was. I felt more like her character was worthwhile because of it.

When her most memorable personality traits are her girly ones like her hair being in a mess or her wanting to shop it's just, ugh. Actually revealing the fanservicey ideals of the writers nails a horrible nail right into the coffin of things. That's one of the reasons I like Iris so much. Seriously, Iris has little to no fanservice moments and she actual develops unlike Cilan and Ash who have been static the whole saga. But that's a complaint for another time. She also is a wild child, is the first darker-skinned female of Pokemon, and she dares to mock the boys in her group and isn't a jail baity subservient friend to them.(Yeah, yeah, she's a bitch for that. I've heard it all.)

I really hope they don't make XY-chick into a Dawn copy, what with the new customization feature in the games.

Do you remember the character "Hello Nurse" From Animaiacs?
the whole point of her existance was Yakko and Wakkos love interest. (5% of the time she was chased by one or both of the warner brothers unless she had a key suppporting role and even then they would be making Fanservicy remarks to her.

With regaurds to pokemon Dawn seems ti be currently the worst offender for the fanservice in show in my thoughts... After seeing her in that French Maid outfit all i had to say was "Goodnight Everybody!" Now since they admitted that they are for sight appeal, it is a good thing they didnt use Rosa or Hilda... THough i am getting worried about the new girl from XY well because the new region is based in France and the French are well known for their sence of fashion

Hello Nurse, though she was pretty pointless and fanservicey most of the time. Exist solely for comedic purposes, never impacting the plot ever. It's a bit easier to excuse in a way, I think I mean more so in a main role should a female be portrayed as a pointless typical feminine chick who's there to mainly provide fanservice and support her male counterpart is when it get ridiculous in a sense. For example, let's take Lola Bunny from Space Jam for example, existing mainly for the sake of having a "female" Bugs Bunny and giving him a chick in a way. Baby Looney Tunes and The Looney Tunes Show expanded on Lola's typical personality and gave her traits that made her standout.

Yeah, the most blatantly obvious moment of fanservice for Dawn. When it comes to females, I feel like PokeSpe(Pokemon Special) does its main female fairly correctly. Sapphire Burch for example from the Ruby and Sapphire chapters calls out Ruby on his behavior and takes on gyms, the first female to take on gyms and earn all eight badges. Compared to Ruby who takes on the more feminine and less-developing Contest quest.

Sapphire struggles and battles against the gym leaders and train hard, she's wild and free, has a bit of a snarky mouth, doesn't take Ruby's behavior and calls him out on it most of the team, and by the end seems to have a more stronger-looking team than Ruby. She didn't follow the typical gender stereotype of girls getting the more feminine goal, she was for something more battle orientated. She shared equal importance to Ruby without it being fanservice value, only toward the end did the focus shift by a minuscule amount.

Even White, from the Black and White chapters, though she might be Black's counterpart isn't portrayed in a sexual way. She's brave, catches a whole team of Pokemon and no not a whole team of cuties either. She has an oddball capture like Dorothy, a Stunfisk. All of her Pokemon are female, yet none of them act overly as emotional or girly as say Dawn's Buneary. Platina Berlitz is the one on her journey in the Diamond and Pearl chapers with Pearl and Diamond tagging alongside her. It's her story and journey with them latched on.

Whoops, and I got away from the topic. But anyway, XY-chick, France, French stereotypes, customization all just seem like a recipe for a Dawn-ish fanservicey character. I imagine they would go that route too after three years of Iris it wouldn't be shocking, but would be annoying. I'm actually hoping they just go with a cool girl like May or Misty(Not direct copies but similar in essence.) in personality or nerdy like a female Max, or maybe more battle-orientated girl. The XY stuff did mention a new style of battling or something so hopefully they go with that.

I don't have any problem with fanservice, though I do find it hilarious how open this guy is about it.

It could also have to do with marketing purposes. Pokemon has a pretty even male-to-female fanbase ratio, so it would be a huge turn-off to the many female viewers not to have a major female character in each arc. For me, that's why I was extremely happy when Pokemon Crystal and Ruby/Sapphire introduced female player characters.

Fan-service (aka Ecchi) exists in almost every animated series from Japan, even in animes of the "kodomo" genre, so Pokémon obviously wouldn't be an exception. Actually, this isn't only present in animes, there is fan-service in tokusatsus, games, doramas, etc. Like it or not, it is basically a part of the Japanese culture.

I used to be pissed off by fan-service in Japanese media, but nowadays I couldn't care less - as long as the characters are well developed and have semi-realistic personalities, the clothes they are wearing (or not wearing) is just a minor detail - after all, I never cared about what clothes women and men use in real life, why would I care about it in fiction? :P Unfortunately, the girls in the Pokémon Anime aren't well developed nor they have semi or realistic personalities :'(

I just think there should be more male fan-service to make things more "equal", the only shows I know with this are Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and Katekyo Hitman Reborn. That is so sad.

It doesn't necessarily have to be the case. Iris is, for example, light years away from Dawn's sort of fanservice so they obviously aren't focused on that segment. So in terms of BW, they obviously didn't choose the female character in that regard otherwise they would have chosen Hilda.

    BTW, guys. I don't hate Dawn, I actually liked her character a lot during some moments in DP and she did look nice alongside her Pokemon. I'm just not fond of the idea of Dawn so to speak, it felt like it was basically "IGNORE MY PERSONALITY/CHARACTER AND LOOK AT MY SKIRT!" I don't really have super negative feelings about any character. ^^;;

You guys have no clue what a storyboard artist is, right? Water Pokemon Master's horrible interview is out of context. The guy he interviewed is not a writer or direction.

I can't believe people still post that horrible interview that was absolutely garbage right from the start.

I did like her too though she did seem a bit corny and cliched at times in her development and attitude. it just seemed that she seemed to have the most memoriable fanservicey moments in the show esp with her maid dress. this to me seems more along the lines of (in tvtropes terms) Getting Crap Past the Radar to me than just raw fanservice since only a few episodes had her fanservicy outfits. i just hope they dont take it up to 11 with the XY chick...

Its no different than Misty's goldeen outfit or May in swimsuits. They do it with every female character.
