A tutorial for recoloring the official art

I do it a lot, so now I will do a tutorial showing how! I know these are probably all over Deviantart and similar places, but I figured I show how I've personally done it.
I guess for an example, I'll recolor Buizel, because it doesn't have too little or too many colors, and it was the first thing that came to mind. Anyways,
1. Open it up in whatever image editor
....except paint. Really, I don't think this can be done in paint anyways. I use Gimp.
2. Duplicate it several times
Base it on how many colors you have. Buizel has 4 (Orange, blue, yellow, cream), so I'll duplicate it 4 times, and keep the original at the bottom for reference (giving me 5 total)
3. Recolor each layer
This varies based on what image editor you're using, but for Gimp I'd reccomend either Hue/Saturation or Colorize under "Colors". I'll make Buizel Blue with a white stomach, yellow fins, and and a blue scarf. It'll probably end up looking like this (this is just the top layer)
4. Remove unnecessary colors from each layer
I use the fuzzy select tool, and hold and drag until it goes right to the lines. Then clear it under "Edit". So for the top layer, I'll clear Buizel's fins, stomach, and scarf. It'll end up looking like this
5. Remove unecessary colors from each layer (cont.)
To show the blue scarf and white stomach, some colors from the other 3 layers need to be removed. In the second layer, I'll clear the scarf and stomach. This'll leave the blue scarf. Then in the third I'll only clear the stomach, leaving me with the white.
So just make everything visible again, delete the original, normal colored layer and merge them all together. Then it's all done and near flawless :u
