You know, one thing I was always kinda disappointed about in Pokémon games was the utter lack of character development. I mean, sure, we got little blurbs here and there, but the characters seemed like they were no more than, well, a bunch of pixels.

This began to change fairly quickly, but it wasn't until Platinum that characterization really gained a foothold in Pokémon game storytelling. That's one thing I loved about Platinum, and it's one thing I think Black and White went above and beyond with, at least in terms of the series itself. And it looks like Black and White 2 are continuing this trend, which is yet another thing I'm very excited about.

So tell me, Bulbagarden, how do you feel about the more well-developed characters present in the newer games? Does the presence of more character development help make the gaming experience more in-depth, or does it harm the RPG elements?

Well, it does both...depending on the player at hand. In fact, depending on how they go about it, one could be subject to caring about the story's first half, then switching into competitive metagame mode once the postgame is unlocked (which, admittedly, is what I'm doing minus my Keldeo I'm going to transfer to B2W2 once it's trained, in the hopes that I'll be getting a good Black Kyurem)!

I was impressed with Silver's (however minimal) character development in HGSS. I couldn't believe Pokemon games could do that.

Then I played Black and I was mindblown. The characters from Gen V are so deep. I can relate to a couple of them well.

That's the entire point of RP games, isn't it? You just a character that you can change around in terms of skills and abilities, or in this case, Pokémon, but you play through the story that has already been set in stone for you. So no, I don't think it detracts the RP elements of the games.

It's one of the things I loved most about Black & White; the characters in the game were so good I just wanted to play through and find out what happens to them, and that's why I thought Generation II was so dull.

    ^Oops.

It's just something I've noticed, though. There's a minority of people who honestly hate the more plot-based direction Pokémon games are taking, as opposed to the old gameplay-based direction of the originals. Seriously, compare FR/LG to Emerald. Which one has more of a plot, and better character development?

I myself really love the more in-depth worlds that the newer games have brought.

I think it all stinks just like your stupid face. I hate you. Dig a hole and jump in it.
