So, I was scanning the RSE remakes thread when I saw this quote:

Now, before I start, I would like to stress this is in no way a personal attack on menametlg. However, the above quote was one of a sizeable number that I've seen which appear to me to mark an interesting trend I believe to have observed in the past few months.

My initial reaction to this quote was "OK, lets not go making wild statements that we can't take back later on". I mean its fair enough if the poster genuinely believes that RS were the best games ever - far be it from me to question such a subjective matter - but I feel that certain people on the forums (whom may or mayn't include the poster quoted) are jumping the gun and romanticising the Gen III games a bit.

After all, they used to say this about GSC before those games got their remakes and now that the remakes have been released people are all of a sudden complaining about how "cramped" the region is comparatively (amongst other things).

I mean, lets face it, there were a lot of problems with R/S that need to be considered before one makes such a sweeing statement about the quality of the main series games, e.g.

- no backwards compatitbility
- no foreign pokemon attainable
- distinct lack of potential post story/E4 activity
- Luvdisc
- Oldale Rown (seriously, wtf was that about? It was just a boring, random settlement that served no purpose whatsoever and had absolutely no character)
- no day/night cycle
- Rival (May/Brendan) had just about no personality

I could go on.

Of course, it had its good points too (like Dive, <3) but the bottom-line is that I think we need to be wary of losing perspective on these games as time goes by, which is important as whilst it continues to pass I see more and more people pining for the the "glorious" games of the third generation. If you've considered such problems and still feel the games were "the best" then fine, that's your opinion at the end of the day. Its just something to keep in mind, that's all.

EDIT: Obviously I have not made my point clear enough, judging by the comments below, so here it is in a nutshell: I'm not totally slagging off the Gen III games, as I've said they were quite good IMO (though not the best, but that is just my personal belief) and made some great changes, but they weren't flawless (as if any game is) and I think people should remember that when deciding for themselves whether or not they were "the best". If you genuinely think they are (like Rakarei does below, for instance) then thats fair, I'm just warning against people looking at them with rose-coloured glasses in the run-up to the eventual remakes - assuming they will be made - as I vividly remember people doing such with Gen II before they received theirs. That's all.

    No foreign Pokemon?

Also people have always said that Johto is a cramped region and thats because its undeniable fact. HGSS fixed this by returining Kanto to its full glory.

    +Finally no team rocket.
    +Tropical region.
+an incredible improval in graphics, no matter how you look at it
    +Improved music
    +Good music
    +introduction of double battles
+abilities, making pokémon more unique from each other
+overhaul of the ev/iv/nature system, making competative battling a lot more fun and strategical
+being able to play as a girl in the main versions for the first time
+new thing to do in contests, nice variation from battling
+new berries, blending with friends was gimmicky, but very fun

Sure, in retrospect you might say that "these things aren't that great", because you got sick of contests, D/P had better graphics, you liked the 8-bit music, and Team rocket are your favourite villains, but you know what they say, hindsight is a perfect 20/20. Those things were awesome when they first came out, and people remember it like that.

Luvdisc is all right. Although I think its purpose was to make Wallace look badass because if he can get competitive use out of it...

To the above person: I really like luvdisc too, but its stats really are atrocious. There's no denying it, sadly.

    @Mijzelffan:

You say those things as if they make Gen II look any the worse, which they don't (except "good music" which is a totally subjective and therefore moot point in this case). I'm not saying "Gen III was terrible, especially in comparison to previous ones" I'm saying "Let's all hold our horses and actually consider the pros and cons of Gen III before we sing its praise"

As I said, Ranger Jack Walker , I remember a lot of people saying before the 2nd wave of remakes came out that Gen II was oh-so-amazing (which it was IMO, but thats another matter entirely) and since their release I feel there has been a marked decrease and increase in their praise and scorn respectively. I'm just cautioning about people getting their hopes up too much in the same way if the Gen III remakes are to be released.

And by the way, not only that but Cherrygrove served as the place where one could :

    a.) Obtain Mystic Water

b.) Encounter Corsola, which was actually quite rare (uncommon in encounter and fund in only two other places i.e. an obscure lake in Union Cave and Rt. 35). It was my fave in Gen II so I remember ;p

Also I distinctly remember it having a nice, pink hue, as opposed to the genericalitiy of Oldale. Couples with my reasons and what Sarcastically Insane said that's four good reasons as to why Cherrgrve was less boring/more useful than Oldale.

P.S. When I said foreign pokemon I meant pokemon like ledyba which you could find nor indeed obtain in Gen III 'til FrLg came out.
