TOKYO, JAPAN -- 12 FEBRUARY 2014
Game Freak, Inc. has officially announced the existence of Ivysaur eighteen years after its introduction in Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green, the first two games in the Pokémon franchise that would go on to become a financial and critical success.
President and CEO of The Pokémon Company, Tsunekaz Ishihara, explained the strange circumstances surrounding the revelation:
"When we were rushing to release Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green, we were also working to create an official guide for the game. Unfortunately at some point, we neglected to include Ivysaur in that guide. After its release, we realized our mistake. Instead of admitting failure, we decided to release the guide and make it so that Ivysaur was just considered an easter egg in the programming of the game."
"But now we are happy to announce that Ivysaur truly is real. Its been in so much of our media as an easter egg for so long, that I really feel that it deserves to be recognized in full glory. I also hope that our fans will enjoy its greater presence in the future."
This follows on the footsteps of another correction in the official material, where Clefairy was also considered an easter egg after being left out of the original guide until it was announced as being a Fairy-type Pokémon shortly after the release of Pokémon X and Pokémon Y in October 2013.
