My Favorite Character Always Dies

I'm reading Part I of The Lord of the Rings and I just know one of my favorite characters will kick the bucket. My favorite character always dies.
My best example is Harry Potter. Nobody I really liked made it. That, or they became huge jerks/evil/what-have-you.
It's always the best, most enjoyable characters that die, hence why we have this issue. The author knows. So they exploit our love for them and kill 'em off.
Has this ever happened to anyone?
