I've been watching the XY Anime...

And it's been very enjoyable, I'm surprised because I could barely sit through most Best Wishes episodes.

It seems like every thing's coming together just right...surprisingly nice animation with pretty much a good battle every episode (reminds me of Build Fighters which is basically the same way), and an elimination of constant stock-footage which plagued BW, or at least they've made it less noticeable, a competent Ash with his typical shonen antics toned down to be actually enjoyable, a nicely balanced Team Rocket, solid supporting characters...the only thing really left to see is if they'll have decent continuous story lines and plot focus instead of a barrage of fillers.

X and Y is refreshing to me. I wish more people would give it a chance.
It really is handled better than a lot of the other seasons..

Yeah, from what I've seen (admittedly, not much due to other obligations) it definitely seems to be better than Best Wishes.

I still really don't like Ash or TR, but everything else is pretty good.

IMO, XY is much better than BW so far. I can only hope it won't disappoint later like BW did for me.

And yes, a few continuous plotlines (besides the ordinary), like what DP did, would be great.

It looks really good :). I do hope the journey doesn't have much filler and pointless stuff like the DP series.

Black and White was new and exciting for maybe.. the first 5 or 10 episodes, but it went downhill as it went along. :<

X and Y hasn't really done that yet, IMO.. I hope it gets more notice.

Yes, I'm going to be that guy.

I'm going to be that guy who claims how bad the XY Series really is (so far), and how underrated BW is in comparison.

I may practically be in the 0.01% of the fandom who feels this way on BMGF, but I'd like to explain where the dissenters who disagree about this series being good are coming from so you can get an idea of why someone may disagree with you. That being said, I'm happy for all of you who like XY so far, and don't take this the wrong way, but I have some major issues with it only 9 episodes into this series, whereas I didn't really have any with BW until around the time the Rocket v. Plasma episodes were cancelled, which was about 30 episodes into that series.

To start with, let's look at what I do agree with Garren about:

+ Better animation than BW. Like you, I've noticed that it is a lot more fluid and dynamic than BW's style of animation was, and I'm pleased with the lack of redundant stock footage being recycled over and over during battles like yourself.

+ Err..."Competent" Ash. Well, I actually like XY Ash myself because he has a nice balance between his more goofy, absent-minded self that I like, but can also be taken seriously as well and is smart enough that I'm not bothered by him in battle and such. He basically reminds me of AG Ash, but I feel he's rather generic and standard for a lead of an anime series, unlike AG's Ash. That being said, after what I consider the Battle Borg DP Ash and the..err..full-blown idiot BW Ash, XY Ash is a surprisingly pleasant change of pace for the character and the first time I've enjoyed seeing him somewhat this way since AG.

+ Clemont. I love this guy-- he has the coolest inventions, is fairly relatable and interesting, and doesn't have any lame running gags associated with him barring his little sisters' gag, which isn't his own. Plus, he's fairly funny and has quite an intelligent sort of vibe to his character, but is also able to hold his own as a character without being a crutch to anyone else.

Now, here are my problems with XY and why I dislike this series and find it overrated (DP also falls into the same category of being overrated to me, but I'll explain that later if you want seeing as I don't want to get off topic here):

    - Bonnie is...actually kinda poor as a supporting character. Yeah, she's a cute little girl, sure-- but where's her goal? Where's her depth of character, or relatability? I mean, if you enjoy her blushing and trying to find a wife for Clemont gag, then that's great. However, drawing a comparison from a little boy who was also cute back in AG and herself, Max, Bonnie has paled fairly largely in comparison to him.

Notice how Max was a cute little boy in the same vein that Bonnie is a cute little girl, but that wasn't everything to his personality or him-- I mean, I can draw a parallel between Bonnie and Max in that Max had the gag of pulling Brock by the ear like Misty before him while Bonnie has the aforementioned gag of trying to find a wife for her brother, Clemont. However, 9 episodes into AG, and Max already showed us that he was a rather naive, inquisitive, nerdy sort of cute little boy trying to learn more about Pokemon, and unlike Bonnie, he had a goal to become like his dad Norman at this point. Furthermore, Max had a more unique and distinctive personality than Bonnie's...err...simply cute appeal and her generic, flat personality at this point. Finally, Max still had a purpose at this point in that he was the navigator of the AG quartet, while Serena fills that role with the XY quartet, and not Bonnie.

    - Serena is fairly horrid as a supporting character. At the beginning of AG, May at least had a goal of wanting to travel the world before she ended up changing it. 9 episodes into XY, and Serena has...no goal whatsoever yet. Based on what we've seen so far, I'm only able to arrive at the conclusion that she has a one-sided childhood crush on Ash and that has devolved into her attempting to wink and flirt with Ash, with the guy being his typical, dense...oblivious to all forms of love...self, and it only leading to over-inflate Ash's ego. I predict this crush may become a running gag in terms of Serena continuously attempting to flirt with Ash, with Ash being dense to it and such, but only time will tell. Furthermore, she shows nothing but a generic girly-girl personality at this stage in the series, and is rather dull, flat, and boring as a character in her own right. I honestly think that Iris, for all the crap she gets for acting b*tchy, at least had far more character and merit than Serena has had. Being b*tchy to your friends only to help them grow somewhat because you truly care about them is still better than being TOO friendly like this, to the point where you're not really helping them grow or learning to overcome obstacles.

    - Team Rocket...nicely balanced? In XY no less so far?

Seriously, what? So far, they're proving to be worse than their Borg yet somewhat purposeful and decent BW selves, and even worse than their DP brick stupid selves so far in XY. While I do appreciate they aren't popping up every 2 minutes like they were in DP just to get blasted off, the time they do show up to bug the twerps in XY ends up making them a bunch of useless plot devices that end up as punching bags for Ash and company. There's literally no real purpose for them being in this series period right now, but that's only being made worse by them showing up and getting owned immediately. Furthermore, they're goofy to the point where they act plain stupid now just like in DP, and they don't even have the depth of character they did in that saga-- even there, at least we had the 2 goodbyes eps with Dustox and Cacnea, and Jessie had some sort of decency unlike James and Meowth in that she was an OK coordinator...I guess. :/

Granted I don't hold the 2 goodbyes or Jessie from DP against XY TRio considering it's so early in the game so far, but they are ANYTHING but balanced right now. They need a LOT of work to be decent this saga to say the least.

...So, that's basically where I stand myself. No offense intended, but I just wanted to throw an opposing opinion out there.

I agree as far as Team Rocket goes in general, but they should've been gone long ago. They stopped being relevant in the games after HG/SS and so should they have been in the anime. As far as the rest go... I stopped watching BW around the time of Dawn's return after reading League spoilers, so I felt there was no longer any point, so I can't comment on the rest.

Well, I liked Max too, and I agree he had more of a role, but I honestly find Bonnie to be extremely cute and a surprisingly well-written child character, plus it's nice to have two girls for once.

And she already has her own Pokemon more or less, Dedenne, which I assume she'll (hopefully) train some a bit later on, something that Max didn't really get till arguably Munchlax. Anyway her and Clemont are a complete package as far as I'm concerned, they're rather cute together in the games and I couldn't really see them separated.

Serena is fairly horrid as a supporting character. At the beginning of AG, May at least had a goal of wanting to travel the world before she ended up changing it. 9 episodes into XY, and Serena has...no goal whatsoever yet. I don't think being 9 episodes in is exactly enough to declare a character a failure because they don't have a goal, especially when that character really didn't join the main group till around Episode 5. Furthermore, the whole point of her character is that her mother wants her to be a Rhydon Racer yet she doesn't and is looking for her own goal, thus I don't think using that as a negative and saying she's a one-sided character is a bit premature. Now if the series continues, and that plotpoint is dropped, I'll agree, but her goal right now is finding her own goal, which I find to be a legitimate pursuit, and basically what her game version was all about too. I don't see how that's bad writing when it's purposeful. My guess? She'll end up becoming the character focusing on Mega Evolutions, wanting to learn their secrets, and maybe be the one who gets Korrina's 2nd Lucario.

Also, I think "having a goal" is a bit overrated since the only goals that were really solid were Ash's, Dawn's, and May's, because there was an actual measurement to go buy, the Leagues/Festivals. Most of the other support characters had extremely vague goals...Misty's "Water Pokemon Master", Brock's "Breeder", Cilan's "Top Sommelier", and Iris' "Dragon Master", more or less they were sort of just their designated goal but often ignored and never elaborated on. I mean, there are episodes where those characters did stuff that fit within their stated goal, and they sort of ended up doing something that'd suggest a path towards reaching that goal, but otherwise there was never a set end point to reach for them thus leaving them quite malleable.

Finally, I really don't feel Serena is any more stereotypically girly than any of the other girls, she seems more or less the same, how a girl would act when written primarily by Japanese males. I find her crush on Ash to be pretty cute honestly, and possibly leading to interest plot-lines down the road, I really don't get the "waifu" comments going around, especially since that term doesn't even refer to a character's personality, more so how the audience sees them, and pretty much every female character is some weirdo's waifu-chan.

As for Team Rocket, I actually really enjoyed them in Diamond and Pearl for numerous reasons, so I strongly disagree with you, sure they were a bit dumb, but there were lots of cute episodes throughout the show such as the Cacnea/Dustox farewells, them actually succeeding in contests, the episodes where they teamed up against Team Plasma, etc. I actually consider DP their high-point outside of the Kanto Team Rocket, and was really disappointed with them in BW simply because they were void of humor. Also Best Wishes Team Rocket actually succeeded far less than comedic Team Rocket did, they'd pretty much just give up most of the time, I honestly laugh when people claim they were more competent in BW. They weren't. They just replaced the cool mechas they used to use with boring, "realistic" ones that failed just as much, but didn't look nearly as cool doing so. XY Team Rocket has Wobbuffet back, which in my opinion is a great start, and they've been decent so far, although once more they haven't really had many focus episodes yet. I can also accept that they're dropping them from Gym Episodes now, which is the only episodes I don't think they really need to appear.

So, yeah, I honestly don't really get how XY is a bad series by your definition, because at least 9 episodes in I'm enjoying it and everything's showing promise, where for me Best Wishes never really drew me in beyond simply the all-new cast.

Fair enough-- I can respect that, even though I pretty much disagree on all accounts at the moment.

You have improved my opinion of Bonnie a bit, though, but I can't say I agree about Serena or Team Rocket at all.
