Recently, a lot of people seem to have been arguing for Fletchling to become Fire/Flying, so we can finally have a starting/early bird that isn't Normal/Flying. While I don't object to that idea, I think you're forgetting a certain Pokémon by the name of Wingull. A lot of people seem to be dismissing Wingull, and I actually consider it an early bird.

I also consider Poochyena to be an early rodent/mammal, like Zigzagoon, and this all stems from the fact that Generation III focused on duality:

Double battles were introduced.

It was the first time in which you had two Rivals.

Hoenn was the first (and only, so far) region to have two Villainous Teams.

First time we got two Champions.

The first time we got two professors.

The main characters got two different outfits.

Beautifly and Dustox, Ninjask and Shedinja, Plusle and Minun, Volbeat and Illumise, as well as Lunatone and Solrock. We also got two "Pseudo-Legendaries", Salamence and Metagross, in Generation III.

It was the first Generation with 2 paired versions (Ruby & Sapphire, FireRed & LeafGreen).

Some of these are trivial points, but I just saw them as further driving home the point that Generation III dealt with duality. Before I start explaining why I consider Wingull and Poochyena to be "early Pokémon", you have to understand that it is a fan-made term, with fan-made rules, so they will differ from one person to another, but there are still some rules that everyone agrees upon, just like Pseudo-Legendary.

Wingull shares the same Base Stats Total with Taillow, as do Pelipper and Swellow.

It if found earlier than Taillow.

Like Taillow, and the arguments for Fletchling, its main Type is not Flying.

Last, but not least, the duality.

It seemed logical to me to consider Wingull to be an early bird. I spared mention of things that seemed like just counterparts, such as the Lotad family and the Seedot family, as well as Zangoose and Seviper, because they don't work as well in double battles, at least, not to me. As I see it, Generation III focused on Duality, and Wingull and Poochyena were just emphasis on that theme.

I also consider Spearow and Mankey to be "early Pokémon", which, again, is only a fan-term, like "Pseudo-Legendary".

First of all, we see the player character running to the bench. It is a goal. It is a destination. You might be thinking that it's normal, considering how you always walk towards stuff in real life, and in Pokémon games.

You'd be wrong. The character stares at it for a while before he sits. About a second, just staring at it. I'm sure that if the game was more detailed, we would see him breathe a sigh of relief and an expression of accomplishment will take over his face.

Then he sits. Go back to the video, and watch that part. He doesn't just sit on the bench; he acts exactly how you would act about meeting your bed after a long, tiring day at work or school. He doesn't just sit on the bench, he lets the bench consume him, and fall into it, because he appreciates the comfort of sitting.

And then what happens? The camera changes angles! Not only that, but it is slightly panned upwards! It reinstates the importance of sitting on benches. AND THEN IT LINGERS FOR ANOTHER SECOND OR SO! The camera knows how important the bench is, and how much it means to the player. And look at him! He's absorbing all the beauty of the world, like he's finally home!

I don't know about you, but I would always save inside a Pokémon Center, or right outside of it, because I want my character to rest. It's called empathy, caring, and being nice to others. If you don't like sitting on benches, or if you're not excited about it, then you're clearly an evil person, and I suggest you visit this website.

Kalki
Picked as my Starter in my latest play of Platinum. She is named Kalki after one of the avatars of Vishnu, a theme repeated across my Pokémon Platinum team. It would've been easier to name her after Kurma, a world turtle of sorts, but Kalki seemed more fitting for one of my favourite Pokémon. She is still in Pokémon Platinum, as are the rest of the Pokémon in this column.

Anghenfil
Oh, how you saved the Johto Starters. I tried all three of them in Generation II, but they all disappointed. In addition, they all looked bad, in my opinion. I picked Cyndaquil in SoulSilver when it first came out, but he did nothing to save them, and it wasn't until I chose this Pokémon to be my starter that they became somewhat decent. His name means "Monster" in Welsh. All the members of my HeartGold team now reside in Black 2.

Baoding
A part of my Random Party Challenge. It hasn't been used at all so far, but having already used a Metagross, I suspect it'll be useful. It is named after Baoding Balls, which were made of iron, and are sometimes used for meditation.

Varaha
So far, he is still not paying off. The Mamoswine Family was never one of favourites until the introduction of Mamoswine, and I've wanted to use them ever since I saw that Pokémon. Hopefully, Mamoswine is more useful. Varaha is a boar in mythology, which is why he is was named after that avatar.

Tair
I was neutral towards this Pokémon, and after Slugma became another Johto disappointment, I decided to try out a new Fire Pokémon. There was none, so I sent him over from Pokémon Platinum (before the Vishnu playthrough). Tair is "Three" in Welsh, and he is named after the Three Wise Monkeys story.

Wendy
She has not hatched yet, so there is nothing I can talk about, like Baoding. However, my expectations for her is very high, as the Blissey Family is one of my favourites based on the sole fact that they have a high defence, and have access to a variety of healing moves that will surely come in handy. She will be named after a Wendy House, as Happiny is the "Playhouse Pokémon".

Krishna
I was planning on training a Houndoom to see if I would like that family, but I saw a Murkrow ready to be bred, and decided to test it out. So far, Krishna is very useful, and he is living up to the high standard that has been set by Mandibuzz from Pokémon Black. According to Wikipedia, Krishna means "Dark-Coloured", so I picked that name for him.

Cythraul
She was always inferior to Umbreon in my eyes, and I only used her because I wanted to seriously try out an Eeveelution, and a Psychic Pokémon. She was surprisingly useful, and Espeon is now my favourite Eeveelution. Her name means "Demon" in Welsh, because, according to Bulbapedia, Espeon is based off of the Nekomata.

Egeria
The Ludicolo Family was one my favourites based on design, but Egeria isn't living up to my expectations; the only way he managed to level up enough to evolve is by using Frustration. He is named after Egeria Densa, a plant which grows in water.

Vamana
A Pokémon that I've wanted to train for a long time, and I'm glad I finally did so. He is named Vamana because that avatar was the first to not have any features of an animal; contradictory, but what I got is that Vamana was a simple avatar, so it seemed fitting to have this Pokémon be named after Vamana, considering Tauros's design is simple.

Arwystl
A Pokémon that I only decided to train because one of my friends insisted that it was a good Pokémon; she was also the one who said Infernape was good. I obviously trusted her during the playthrough of HeartGold, as I remember her praising Espeon for having the best Hidden Ability. A great choice, and a very easy Pokémon to get, especially early in the game. Arwystl means "Charge" in Welsh.

Hellbender
I never liked the Quagsire Family, and I doubted I ever will. However, Hellbender is slowly making me neutral towards that line. She was useful at times, and useless at others. She is named after what Bulbapedia claims to be one of the origins for Quagsire; a Hellbender Salamander.

Rama
So far, I am not very happy with this Pokémon. She finally evolved from Dratini, and is slowly becoming useful. I'm counting on her to redeem the Dragonite Family. She is named Rama because, in mythology, Rama is an avatar that desperately wanted to prove himself, and that is what I need this Pokémon to do.

Aquagenic
She is such a good Pokémon. Sudodoodo's design never appealed to me, but I decided to use her to try her out, as I'm always intrigued by Pokémon that are limited in the games. She was surprisingly useful, and helped me out a lot in tough spots against any Trainer. Her name comes from Aquagenic Uritcaria, a skin condition where contact with water can cause rashes and pain.

Foliage
One of the goals for the Random Party Challenge is to make me take a liking to some Pokémon, but I still rolled my eyes when I got Tangrowth. Her inclusion is probably what made Hellbender look even slightly useful. She is mostly a stalling Pokémon. It's not hard to guess what her name means.

Matsya
This is such a good Pokémon. I loved her design when I first saw her, and now I finally get to train her. She is named after Matsya, who was a fish that saved the world from a flood, which is fitting because Corsola serves as a shelter for smaller Pokémon, according to the Pokédex. Out of the five that were imported into this game, she was the first to become a favourite of mine.

Llacharedd
Owls are one of my favourite birds, some of the others being crows and vultures (sense a pattern?). I never gave the Noctowl Family a chance, but a Nuzlocke made me do so. When I restarted HeartGold, I decided to seriously try one of them. He was very useful in the early stages, but fell out of use after I first defeated the Elite 4. Llacharedd means "Glare" in Welsh. All of the Pokémon that were on my HeartGold team have become some of my favourite Pokémon, thanks to the playthrough.

Scopto
I've been meaning to use one of these Pokémon, so I'm glad that I got her as one of my Pokémon for the Random Party Challenge. She proved to be very useful, and I already love the Gothitelle Family. When compared to the others that have so far disappointed me in White 2, she was more than a good Pokémon. She is named after Scoptophilia, and Scoptophobia, because the Pokédex states her love for staring.

Mewtwo was never a favourite of mine, and I like the new forme more than the first one. Neither of them actually look good, but the new forme is an improvement; hopefully a new story will accompany it. And I hope that Mr. Fuji returns. All that's left is Fennekin becoming a Fire/Fighting Pokémon, and I'll squeal in joy at how angry the fandom becomes.
In other news, I started watching Sons of Anarchy; it's good so far.

I was watching random Youtube videos, mainly openings for Anime shows, and I stumbled upon the opening for Shingeki no Kyojin. In the related videos was the first episode. I did stumble upon the series before, but before there was no Anime, and it didn't seem interesting to me.

I tried not to click on it, but I was tempted to see whether it was good or not, as the Wikipedia page for the series didn't do anything to increase or decrease my hype for the show.

And, my god...

I just ordered the first four volumes of the Manga off of Amazon, and now I have to abstain from the Anime until it comes out on DVD, because that is how I prefer to watch anything. I don't think I can resist the temptation. It's like that one time I refused to watch the trailers for Pokémon X & Pokémon Y, then broke down after a month and flooded myself with the available information of the games.

This is the highest quality I could find of the opening theme, and I suggest that you try to hold out for the DVD, because I should never have watched the first episode, and I really want to watch all the episodes in one sitting. Also, I want a hand to hold during this abstinence.
He's a very quiet Pokémon, and likes to thrash about.

After defeating Roxie and wiping the floor with her guitar, we moved on to the worst part of the video games; the Pokéstar Studios. It is an awful, awful feature. If you thought contests were bad, then just remind yourself of this, and contests will seem like the best thing to have ever happened to the video games when compared to this crap.

Anyway, after Roxie's failure of a father went back to his old job, I wanted to get to Castelia City, but some Team Plasma expandable members were in the way. I defeated them, reluctantly, and went back to the pier to hear a boring conversation about how Roxie's father cannot act.

I got on the ship, and we started for Castelia City. Only one egg left. What will it hatch into?!!?!!?!!Happiny?!!?!?!?!?

At this point, I had taught Lotad a move that accurately portrays my feelings towards him; Frustration. We manage to knock out the Audino, and we jump from Level 3 to Level 9. I do more of that, and soon enough, my party becomes something not so mediocre. At that point, two eggs hatched.

I name her Scopto. I start training her, and eventually, she becomes a beast, destroying everything and everyone in her way. She's a rash Pokémon, and often will jump into the grass and beat any other Pokémon into a bloody mess. This backfired, of course, when a Sewaddle used Bug Bite and put her in her place. She's so stupid; thinking that women are better than men. Get your equality out of here.

After I told her about my sexism, she started throwing things around and went on a tantrum. We would be walking and she would just randomly throw rocks at me and the Preschoolers. A few of them cried, and the adults just gave me looks. It's kids VS. kids; it's all equality and I'm all for it if it is convenient for me.

Another ugly Pokémon. She'd fit right in with Hellbender. I name her Foliage, and don't put that much effort into training her. She's adamant and strongly defiant, so she will stay weak no matter what happens.

We reach Virbank City with a party of four Pokémon, all behind me but Scopto, who is running and slapping random people, and staring at others with a disgusted expression. In the Virbank Complex, Egeria evolves into a Lombre, and starts manning up.

And so, another training session starts.

I don't get it. Was I right or wrong? I said that Mewtwo could never get a new forme because it's all about the new Pokémon, and Gamefreak would never introduce a new Forme for a Pokémon at the start of a Generation. I also went on a tantrum about how the Anime can't be trusted, but that's beside the point. If this is a new Pokémon, then I was right. If this is a forme of Mewtwo, then I was very wrong.

Anyway, regarding it's design. I held off on giving my opinion regarding the appearance of the Pokémon, which is what I judge all Pokémon by, because the poster was a bad quality, but now I see the official artwork, here's my opinion in the form of a list:

I like the semi-circle on its head.

I don't like the horns.

The purple colouring on the tail seems too sudden and jarring, and I don't like how the tail ends.

I like the eyes and the general face.

EW! LOOK AT HOW THE TAIL BENDS IN THE TRAILER! EW!

Seriously, it's floating just fine, but then bends and looks like an abused Pepsi bottle.

I like the arms and hands.

Dislike the chest and legs.

Maybe it'll grow on me. Now I want it to be a new forme for Mewtwo, because of the same reason I want Fenneking to evolve into a Fire/Fighting Pokémon.

But I really like the halo-thing on his head. Just gives more ground to the Dragon Ball Z jokes to cover. But seriously, the way the tail bends...

According to that lady in the Pokémon Center, I'm a hiker. My name is Vacuous, and I'm a hardy person, meaning that I can stand my ground. My rival is named Huew.

Oh! The first egg is hatching!

And there he is! My first Pokémon! He shall be known as Egeria!

Studying his body language, I can see that he is a very timid Pokémon, and he sleeps a lot. I guess you can expect that from a baby, but it won't be tolerated. His only move is Astonish. Great. I can't even battle with this idiot yet, but we'll try!

Egeria protests and cries, but I drag him to Route 19. A Patrat. We have to run from it! Nope, Egeria dies, and I lose money. Fantastic. I take Egeria to Route 20, and it's still shivering and shaking with fear. I tell it to man up, and go into the grass. A Pidove. I try to run again, but Egeria fails and dies.

Let's give this another shot.

A Patrat. We run! Success! We run again in the grass, and we find a Sewaddle! Yeah, Astonish is weak, but one Oran Berry and stupid repeated uses of String Shot on the Sewaddle's part later, Egeria reaches Level 2! I high five my Pokémon, but it is throw back some paces and ends up crying. We heal, and go into the grass again. Another Sewaddle! This one is stronger and smarter than the previous one, and I end up using every Oran Berry and Potion I have, as well as my only Fresh Water. I used up all my healing items, but Egeria is now at Level 3!

I buy Potions, and go back to Route 20. But another egg is hatching!

I named her Hellbender. She's a very quirky Pokémon, and like Egeria, she often dozes off. She know Water Gun, so maybe she'll be better at levelling up. We go back to Route 19, and a Purrloin appears. Nope. Hellbender dies. I use Egeria to run, and we go back to heal. That Purrloin was at Level 4, so maybe she'll fare better against a lesser Pokémon.

Purrloin Level 3. This time, we're doing decent damage with Water Gun. 2 Potions later, and we're at Level 3! Another Purrloin, and we reach Level 4. Oh, how the tables have turned, Egeria.

And so, our long training session begins.

So, I heard of this random number generator for a long time, and I decided to put it to good use and see which six Pokémon I get.

Here are the rules:

* No Legendary Pokémon.

Here are the rules:

The Pokémon must be able to be bred.

No Legendary Pokémon.

If you get any member of an evolution family, use the most basic form.

If you get a Pokémon of the wrong gender for that Pokémon, then breed again for the correct gender.

No Pokémon will be a repeat of others.

Aside from HM Slaves, no other Pokémon is allowed in this play.

I've seen a lot of people making their own rules for games, some joke and some serious, so I thought I'd try my own basic run; I might like it more than others. I don't know if this was done before. Now, let's get started!

The first result is 375!

375

So Beldum will be joining our party!

The second result is 488!

Nope! Try again!

The second try for the second result is 440!

440

Happiny, it is!

The third result is 272.

272

Lotad, welcome to the Party!

The fourth result is 194! Crap, it's a Generation II Pokémon. And I was hoping that my luck streak for this would continue. Beldum, Happiny, and Lotad are all Pokémon that I like. Let's hope this one is good...

194

Great. It's garbage. Well, let's hope this play will make me like this Pokémon. I didn't mention this, but I'm doing this in the spirit of Nuzlocke; to use Pokémon I wouldn't normally use.

The fifth result is 465!

465

Tangela, another Pokémon I don't like, will be joining our party!

The sixth result is 574!

574

Gothita, it is! Not a Pokémon I paid any attention to, so this'll be interesting.

Gender pending for the Wooper.

I'll breed them in Black 2, and send them over to White 2 after I get the first Gym Badge, and hatch them there. Beldum is a Pokémon I've always liked, but never got to use in any playthrough because it came late into the game. Lotad is something I usually use at the start of a game, but then abandon it as I get better Pokémon and replace it; the fact that I needed a stone to evolve it didn't help, but I've always liked the design.

Happiny is the one I am most excited for. I've always wanted to use a member of that line, but I keep putting it off. Finally, I'll have my own healer! Wooper is a Pokémon I've been intrigued by, and came close to using a couple of times, but it's just such an awful-looking Pokémon, like most of the Generation I & II Pokémon. Maybe now it'll grow on me, and maybe I'll get sick of its stupid face.

Tangela is just an ugly, ugly Pokémon. But I have started using it in a fan-fic, so maybe I'll like it more because of that, and maybe I'll end up killing it off. I'm indifferent to Gothita, so using it might swing my opinion on this Pokémon either way. We'll see how it goes.

What's that? You say I shouldn't judge Pokémon by looks alone? I don't. Next to looks, I judge them based on appearance and design. It's not all about looks for me; it's just one of many factors.
