Note: Yes, this review does have some spoilers. Read at your own risk if you have not yet seen it. This is also indeed my first actual review.
Blood-C is what you can call one of the most hated anime of 2011. Many people were disappointed as soon as it started and complained a ton about it. Though, there is some good reasons for the hate by those who have watched it and have not got on the hate bandwagon without really having a reason. In this review I will state why I didn't enjoy it so much as the creators wanted me, as a viewer, to do so. As you can see from the title alone, this is indeed a remake of the 2005 anime Blood +. Since I have only seen up to episode 4 of +, I will hardly make any connections with it.
To start this review off, I disliked the story development. It does have the basic premise of a schoolgirl who is a complete mystery slashing man-eating monsters with a sword, but that is soon twisted around to the premise of each human and monster character trying to revert Saya to her old vampire self. That is basically what this anime is about, but you won't see the second one until near the end of the series. Being a 12 episode series, that wasn't acceptable whatsoever.
In this Blood series, our lead Saya is a klutzy naive schoolgirl in the day while at night, she becomes serious and "badass." Her main slogan is "I will protect everyone" but for those of us who have seen this, we know that she hardly saves anyone at all. Including her "friends" who get brutally devoured before her eyes. Also in our cast are some lovable twins, the student rep who is in love with her, our calm girl, her father, that cafe man, the teacher, and the cool boy who falls in love with her also. In the last few episodes, this all becomes twisted around as Saya is revealed to be the same type of monster as the ones she fights and her friends and her father aren't actually her friends and father but people who pretended to be her friends and father just to get money for it. Even the town and its people are fake. This could have been a much more interesting and provoking twist if they did it in the middle instead of the end.
Thankfully, the animation and artwork weren't so bad. The fight scenes were very enjoyable to watch and the music wasn't so bad as well. We have a life of slice tune, a creepy tune, and the fight tune which were all pretty well done. What I really enjoyed about the soundtrack was the opening. It had fantastic artwork and animation mixed with some decent J-rock.
I felt it was quite hard to enjoy this anime as some others have done. The feeling of emptiness and questioning are all that I am left with when I try to remember watching this anime. Hopefully the movie will answer some of them and be worth waiting half a year for. To those of you who are fans of this, I apologize that this wasn't so positive.
My rating for it: 6/10
