GF has been vague about whether it's a hat or not.
) all of Brendan's
artwork, even RS ones, you can see a smelt of black hair underneath his hat however it's very light, and one
of the artwork have him with white hair in the back (though that's possibly a coloring error).
In two of the manga
Brendan's counterparts have hats.
However one of the manga
definitely has him with white hair, or more likely multicolored hair. The white (or light colored being that the strip is in black and white) hair is obviously less bulky then Brendan's other counterparts, parts, is more relaxed, and if you look at the bottom you can see strands of hair. Even so he has dark hair poking out of the sides of his headband most likely leaving him with black and white hair (there's no colored artwork of him to truly see it though).
It's odd how Ruby, of the Pocket Monster manga, doesn't have a hat. If Brendan did have a hat wouldn't he also have a hat? The artists must have each done to them what they imagined Brendan's hair was like.
Also, as a sidenote, if you look at the manga hats they do look different from Brendan's. Ruby's is longer and a little less bulky and Rald's is a clump of a hat.
Another side note is from the Battle Frontier manga. Look at that kid
next to Rald in the cover. His name is Enta and he is an apprentice.
would he be wearing a headband exactly like Brendan's? Maybe the artist was torn in two between whether Brendan has a hat or headband and decided to split it between two characters?
In Brawl one of Pikachu's costumes is Brendan's headband
. It's odd how it's a headband and not a hat.
Nintendo put a lot of work into Brawl, putting even the most minor insignificant details from previous games in. They most likely worked with Game Freak on the Pokemon parts. If it was a hat they would have implemented it in instead, just like one of Pikachu's
hats is Red's original hat and Jigglypuff
sports Leaf's hat.
Brendan's 'hat' is unusually flexible. Hair is flexible, especiallly "anime hair"
, but the same can be said for hats.
If you look at Brendan's model images from XD and
Coloseum it's definitely bulky and flexible.
But so is May's
, and arguably Leaf's
. Also, as a side note, his XD side burn seems to have a brown hint. Even then
those games weren't created by Game Freak but Genius Sonority making them as moot as the anime or manga.
You could argue that the black "hair"
at the back of Brendan's head, in his backsprite, is proof of him having black hair. But did I say he didn't
have black hair?
Multicolored hair in anime is no new occurence. In fact, I can name two Japanese characters with the exact
multicolor I believe Brendan has. Hatsuharu
of "Fruit Baskets" fame and Eugene
from one of the many "Mega Man" sub-series.
Multicolor hair is nothing new to Pokemon either. Gardenia
has an orange-black combo, Darach
has black and blond (golden?) hair, and arguably Thorton
has green and black hair. Even more arguable is Mr.Stone has
, who may have a blue-white combo however due to his age it could possibly just be aging and he had bluish hair. However his son Steven
has natural blue/silver hair and he seems no older then 30 at best (and even then I'm stretching it a bit).
Even if Brendan doesn't have natural
black and white hair he could have dyed it.
It's arguable that if Brendan had black hair he would resemble Norman more, even if he wasn't his dad and Birch was in canon. However we have not seen Red's, Leaf's, or any of your gen 4 fathers up close so that would be a moot point. May and the RSE mom just resemble each other.
Possibly due to a genetic relation
For those who say that it cannot be a hat due to the other male protagonists having hats..Look no further then May. She wears a bandanna while most, if not all, of other fem. protagonists wear hats. Headbands and bandannas are in the same "group"; They are headgear but not considered full blown hats.
To put an end to this, there is quite a bit of evidence that Brendan does not have a hat. And if he did, then he would be wearing likely a headband and hat.
We won't know for sure what his hair is like until he appears and we see a VS sprite, a better sprite, or new artwork. Even then the TCG could draw an artwork for him randomly however unless it's by Sugimori I wouldn't label it canon.
