A couple of things I hope to see in the next Smash Bros installment.

A number of interesting suggestions were presented in my last blog entry, so... I figured the least I owe the people who responded is what I personally hope to see. A lot of this is building on the strengths of the previous games and fixing their respective flaws. (Or what I perceive as strengths and flaws. It is my opinion after all, so you're free to disagree.)
Please note, this list might not be very long as the games still have a very long time before they are released, so I haven't quite done much in the way of in-depth speculating yet. As such, this list is VERY subject to change.

Characters & Stages:
- Eliminate clones altogether. Variety is the spice of life, and clone movesets are very disappointing. (Especially Ganondorf being a Captain Falcon clone.) If a character cannot be given a unique moveset, they probably shouldn't be playable to begin with.
- Add more characters. (Duh. Hopefully making the roster bigger than SSBB's. Representation from the veteran's franchises should be expanded to include characters who missed the cut in SSBB, and to newer characters like Ghirahim from Skyward Sword.)
- Keep 3rd Party Characters at a minimum. (I KNOW this stand will not be popular with some, but let's be real here. Smash Bros. was meant to be a Nintendo brawler, not one for characters from every console to get an invite. Sonic and Snake were okay, maybe adding 1-2 more characters under this bill wouldn't hurt too much. But I wouldn't go much farther than that.)
- Allow most of the stages from the past games to return.
- Hoping to see more representation from Kid Icarus and Fire Emblem overall. The former finally had a new game released recently as many of you know, and the latter... well... has plenty of characters and games to work with in all honesty.

Customization: (This section is totally dedicated to expanding the ability to personalize the game to your liking. No actual gameplay changes will be present here, sorry. :V)
- Rather than forcing players to choose from a select few costumes, allow for the ability to create your own costumes to use. (No model editing. Just texture editing like eye color, skin, clothing, etc.) For those not interested in such a feature, keep the ability to choose from default costumes.
- Bring back and expand the Stage Editor mode to include more background motifs and parts to use.
- Leave empty slots on the "My Music" section for each stage for players to insert their own custom tunes and adjust the frequency in which they play, in addition to the tunes already inserted into the game.

Items:
- Restore the old summon rates from the Poke Ball item to ones identical to the rates found in Melee. (Basically, upping the rate at which Legendaries appear, EXCEPT for ones like Mew, Celebi, or Jirachi that just fly off and grant a huge point score.)
- Update the Assist Trophy and Poke Ball summon list. (We've had a lot of new games released since SSBB, along with a new Generation of Pokemon to boot. This is pretty much a given, right?)
- Eliminate the Dragoon parts. (Rather annoying, especially considering they usually block the Smash Ball from appearing until all of them are collected.)

Misc:
- Allow Replays for matches up to 4-5 minutes long.
- Make Replays and Screenshots easier to share. (The format they are exported in on SSBB isn't friendly for sharing. =_=;)
- Bring back Final Smashes, and possibly give new ones to the veterans where possible.

Whether you like it or not, clones are a necessity in fighting games to provide variety for players who aren't good with the original character.

The comment above me gave me cancer. If someone really is that bad they can only play one moveset, then they probably shouldn't be playing that game at all. The true variety there is is the rest of the roster, not an alternate character model.

I don't mind Wolf and Luigi being clones, to be honest. They play pretty differently from Fox and Mario, and them being clones make sense, imo. Especially Luigi. Kind of the Ryu and Ken.

Ganondorf is always the worse offender, really, since his move-set is taken from a character he has no relation to whatsoever, and he has all the other possible moves they could use for him. And he sucks too.

Wolf and Luigi aren't as bad as Toon Link, Young Link, and other notorious clones. Luigi in particular has enough to separate him from Mario, further highlighted by a Final Smash that isn't even remotely similar to Mario's. Wolf has his style too, but he could use more unique Specials. Him sharing the Landmaster Final Smash is also a disappointment. (Couldn't he jump in his Wolfen and call in his fellow Star Wolf members to execute a bombardment attack instead?)

Ganondorf... I don't get what they did to him at all. As a frequent player of the Zelda series, I know for a fact that he has PLENTY of movepool material to work with.

Oh right, one thing I forgot to mention. I would also like to see "bonus points" return. Things awarded at the end of each match based on performance and the way a person played. Smashless for not using any Smash Attacks, Stale Moves (which is a point deduction) for using the same move too many times, and others. Anyone who played Melee and the original SSB might know what I'm talking about. Points aren't anything that really factor in on the game results, but... this was still an interesting system regardless. It's sad they left it out of SSBB.

Agreed, Bonus Points being left out in Brawl sucked.

Most of my problems with Brawl weren't game-play related, as I'm not a serious player really, although I do agree that Melee had a different play-style that was a bit faster and funner, but little things like only five Target Smash, cheap Trophies (most of them re-used models, some series had way more trophies than needed like Mario and Kirby), and no Bonuses bothered me.

Honestly, SSBB felt a little rushed. Not Sonic '06 rushed, but they still could've done better imo. :s Granted, no game is perfect. But still. I pretty much agree with what you said entirely. I missed each character having a unique Target Test especially.
Oh yes, anyone else want to see Race to the Finish return on Classic Mode in the next game?

It was rushed because of us; we were really impatient, and from what I heard, game companies can only delay twice and that's it. There's a good explanation for those "cheap trophies" because in Melee, there weren't any modern models for classic/recent Nintendo characters from the GCN era to re-use because they weren't made yet (Melee, Luigi's Mansion, and Pikmin were the only AAA launch titles at that time).

On the topic of clones, even though Link and Toon Link have nearly identical seeming moves, I think they're different enough. Link is slower and a poor jumper, but his reach and power makes up for it. Toon Link is annoyingly fast yet lacks power. This creates a completely different approach when playing as them or fighting against them.

I think that the Stage Editor needs a complete do-over. It's extremely difficult to make anything that's actually fun or interesting with the limited number of pieces and backdrops.

Might as well add this as well, my top picks for new characters are Medusa and/or Palutena, Yarn Kirby, and Megaman (I know it's a third party character, but come on, who doesn't love Megaman?)
