Why do people try repeatedly to befriend people who ignore them?

I forgot why I'm doing it, so i need opinions on the matter.

EDIT: I'm talking about IRL. Not hitting a "befriend" button... =_=

I was running up the stairs outside, going up to the front door to my cabin (not my house, mah cabin... it's a small house in the wilderness of Big Bear :P).
