Ferrothorn is one of my favorite Unova Pokemon of all. First off, its design resembles a steel UFO full of spikes and whipping vines. It's awesome, that's the only word for it. Secondly, I adore
its typing. Once I found out Unova was introducing a Grass/Steel Pokemon, I knew right away it would become one of my favorites. With this typing, Ferrothorn resists Normal, Grass, Water, Electric, Rock, Steel, Psychic, Dark, Ghost, and Dragon type moves with an immunity to Poison moves. Th Steel typing helps remove the Ice, Flying, and Bug weaknesses of the Grass type, which returns the favor by eliminating the Ground weakness of Steel and introducing resistances to Water and Electric. Frankly, this typing is awesome.
'Awesome' is a word you'll be seeing a lot in this entry because it's the only word that can accurately describe Ferrothorn. Competitively, Ferrothorn is one of the
top used Pokemon in the metagame, period. So for all those naysayers that claim Grass types are weak, Ferrothorn proves them wrong. It has access to Spikes, Stealth Rock, Leech Seed, and Thunder Wave, giving it a pretty impressive support movepool as it is. But it gets better, its awesome defensive stats synergize well with its awesome defensive typing, and if that wasn't enough, it gets Power Whip and Gyro Ball on the offensive side. Throw in the Iron Barbs ability which discourages physical attacks, and you got yourself one hell
of a Pokemon.
The one thing that Ferrothorn may
not be so awesome at is in-game, due to its low Speed and relatively poor offense in comparison to others. Again, defensive Pokemon are frowned upon in-game, and Ferrothorn has one of the lowest speeds of all Pokemon. That said, if you know what you're doing, Ferrothorn will never let you down, in-game or competitively.
