I haven't been crawling through the series of tubes know as the internet lately, but now that summer is here I do have some more time. What have I been liking lately? Wellll......
1) Persona - Yes, I am playing through Persona 1 & 3 on the PSP. I cannot wait for P2: Innocent Sin later this year. I have also been getting into the rest of the SMT series. Its great, and I love the social aspect of P3P.
2) Cycling - this ones a given, as I love it and it keeps me in shape. I'm on my college team too, so thats motivation as well. I'm putting in 6 days a week on the bike, with a minimum of 20miles a day up to a max of 60. feelsgoodman.
3) 3DS - Good system, and looks awesome! Got it pretty close to launch, and played it a ton, but mostly with Pokemon Black/White in the slot. Not really interested in any games yet, but I do own lego Star Wars, Ridge Racer, and Blaze Blue.
4) Toys - Seriously draining all my monies... Lots of Japanese anime collectibles (nendoroids), though it is starting to slow down. Was saving for a Dollfie Dream, but some bike upgrades/matinence ended up costing more and cutting into this fund. Work has been good though. SHE WILL COME!
5) You - Yes, you. Lets be friends? :-D

Anyway, Its been a good summer for me so far, and I still have two months untill the fall semester. We will see where life takes me!

Its been almost two weeks since the release of HeartGold (and SoulSilver) and I have to say the game is every bit as amazing as I had hoped. I could spend the next few hours describing in detail why I think it’s the best thing since sliced bread (which really isn’t that great to be honest, why do people still use this cliché?), but I’ll save you the pain and just say this: IT IS EPIC!

One thing I do have to bring up is the genius invention that is the Pokewalker. Yes, that pedometer you received with your game is one of the coolest little toys that I’ve seen in a long time. Its not just a pedometer, it a pedometer that’s also a mass transit device for Pokemon. How cool is that? Think about any situation, and how its is made so much better knowing you have a Pokemon in your pocket. Its just that awesome. Sitting in a Starbucks drinking tea is cool, but sitting in a Starbucks drinking tea with an Eevee is life changing. I like to have a way to play Pokemon when I really should be doing other things, like paying attention in Anatomy lecture. So far I have built up a ton of Watts thanks to a rather large college campus. Thankfully its warm out now, or I would feel foolish going for long walks. I also have use the trainer connect feature multiple times; Mostly with friends, but once with a complete stranger. I was sitting in class and saw the distinct red and white of a Pokeball. I then shamelessly asked if the young lady who owned it wanted to connect, much to the amusement of my classmates. For my troubles, I got a green shard…

Anyway, I really like that people seem to like Pokemon more openly now. At the midnight release there were about 40-50 people (which I made it to even though I had been suffering from a horrid stomach bug earlier that day. Such sad dedication…), most of whom were my age. Is it just nostalgia for them, or have they been closet Poke-fans all along? More of my friends bought HG/SS than any other Pokemon game since the days of Red and Blue. I like to think that Pokemon fever is still as much an epidemic as it was back then. Just like the old days, I hope they never find a cure.

Anyway, I don’t know about you all, but I’m super excited about HeartGold’s fast approaching release. Now, I know we’ve all know about these games forever, but it seems to have just hit me when they announced the US release dates. Normally I don’t get excited about video games, and I’ve never even preordered a game before, but this is different. This is Pokemon! (In best Leonidas voice) Now, why is it that I’m so excited? I mean, these are the same games I played ten years ago, just with a fresh coat of paint and some free pedometer right? Well, sorta… See, I loved Gold when it first came out. There was so much to do, and at that age I really didn’t care that Kanto wasn’t “fully developed” or that the elite four’s Pokemon were leveled too low. I loved that the game knew what time it was and actually got dark at night. I liked how you would get calls from trainers, just so they could say “Hi!” (Although this got old. Fast). I liked going back to Kanto again and looking for the things that had changed, and most of all I liked the colors. Me, in my limited video game experience, was amazed by what Nintendo could fit onto a small little game card. It was a good game, and it did a lot to make you feel more immersed in the world. We’ve had two generations of pokemon games since then, and they have brought a lot to the table. I do think that none of them have brought as much as Gold and Silver did (Although you could argue Wi-Fi is a pretty big change too) Now when I go back and play Gold, I realize it hasn’t aged all that well. With the release of HeartGold, I will be able to play the game and still be amazed by its visuals like I was back then.

A lot of you might be reading this saying, “Wow, not another nostalgic fan boy!” Hear me out though. I know that the sense of wonder and excitement from my childhood is gone, and I won’t be playing these games to relive that. I’ve changed and grow up, and as much as it was nice to be a kid, I’m not one and no amount of anything (short of magic pixie dust!?!) will change that. I’m excited because these are good games, they were then and they will be now. Pokemon hasn’t changed much, if any, over the years (I’ll save that for another blog) so seeing as I like all the other games, I know I’m going to like this one. The familiar setting is fine by me, its like slipping into a good pair of shoes. It will be nice to escape to Johto again this March 14th. If you guys are excited too, then that’s great! See you around the GTS!
