Pikachu has had a lot of promotion and marketing focus lately. This may just be an annual tradition that happens every August in Japan, but I don't remember Pikachu getting this much attention during prior years.
Usually they have just a Pikachu distribution in Japan; last year's distribution was a Surf or Heart Stamp Pikachu (depending on location), and this year's is a Shiny Pikachu w/ Teeter Dance.
But starting this year, there is a Battle Spot competition focused
The first big patch to Shuffle has just been released. You have to download the patch if you wish to play online.
So far it seems to do the following:
- Shows your Pokemon's EXP when you select it in the Optimize menu.
- Prevents you from accessing the home menu during timed stages.
- Makes it easier to catch a Pokemon that you have failed to catch previously.
- Blocks the Great Ball glitch.

The Mega Evolution mechanic, which debuted this gen, is perhaps the most innovative game-play feature ever introduced for the Pokemon series. With Mega Evolution, Game Freak was able to give a Pokemon more base stat points - an especially attractive feature for lower base stat Pokemon like Sableye -, a different ability, and/or a different typing. I've played Pokémon Shuffle for the last 2 days now (set aside about $40 to get the jewels), and I can make a thorough review of how the game is.
Many people seem to dislike this game because of the microtransactions (and I do agree; after all, I did spend about $40 on it thus far). But aside from that, the game is actually very enjoyable in some ways but far less in others.
