As we walk into the valley of the shadow of death...

Today the draw for the World Cup was made official. And the US had the following bits of misfortune:
1. Their seeded team is Germany. Germany is one of those squads who is seemingly always in the running. Deservedly so, they are one of the favorites to win the Cup.
2. Our other team from the European Pot is Portugal. Home to perhaps the best player in the world (depending on how you consider Messi, CR7, Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez).
3. The weakest team in our pool is Ghana, who may be the best African team of them all. A team that was a contreversial finish (the handball game against Uruguay) from the 2010 semifinals. Not only that, they have knocked the USA out of the last two world cups, so they represent something of a boogeyman for US supporters.
Group G (aka the Group of Death) -
A shame too. If we ended up in a better group, this US team could have had a real shot at making some serious noise. That being said, if we do somehow beat the odds (ESPN gives us a 39% chance of advancing to the knockout stage), our matchups for the round of 16 and even the quarterfinals are easier games than Germany and possibly even easier than Portugal. So there's the small silver lining.
Whatever team you support, there are some great games lined up already (Brazil v Mexico, Spain v the Dutch, Italy v England, Germany v the USA) so it's an exciting thing to be a fan of the beautiful game right now. Rio 2014 can't come soon enough!
Once I have the weekend to digest the other groups, I'll throw out some preliminary predictions for the tournament as a whole.
