So they elected the greatest Pokemon of all time in a democratic fashion

Over 2 million people voted (2.2 million to be exact) and the top 25 (they started by cutting it down to the top 15 from each generation and from there making a top 25 overall) and the final list can be seen here:

http://www.dorkly.com/article/57679/toplist-results-the-25-greatest-pokemon-of-all-time/page:5

Charizard at #1 baby! The king is here. Mewtwo is at number two followed by Blastoise, Mew and Gengar to make your top five. Also interesting was the fact that Dorkly's top three mirrored IGN's in a similar poll (IGN's poll had over 14 million votes) exactly but from there there were differences (Lugia was #4 in IGN's version, breaking the Dorkly poll's all Kanto top 5)

Lugia breaks up the Kanto region dominance at #6, Rayquaza checks in at number 9 as the first Hoenn entry and Lucario hits #12 as the first (and only) Sinnoh honoree. No one from Unova or Kalos made the cut (The top Unova entry was Zekrom at #42 and the top Kalos entry was Greninja at #29)

The top 25 has the following spread by region:

Kanto - 14
Johto - 7
Hoenn - 3
Sinnoh - 1 (Awfully lonely for poor Lucario)

Interestingly enough, one evolutionary line had two Pokemon in the top 25. Haunter checks in at 25, joining his older brother Gengar. Also interesting (to me at least) was that only one Eeveelution made the top 25 (that being Umbreon).

Cool stuff.

And this just contributes to the overratedness of Charizard and Gen 1 as a whole.

Considering that the two contests had 16 million votes total (IGN's had over 14 million votes), it can't really be called overrated.

After all, it's simply what people wanted. If anything, Kanto is underrated given the backlash it faces a lot of the times from sectors of the fandom.

Kanto underrared?? are you kidding me? Gen 5 is the underrated one since alot of people hate it. And yes Gen 1 is extremely overrated since the top five are Gen 1 pokemon.

With the number of votes, it can't really be considered overrated due to the fact that with 16 million votes, there is a very small margin of error in the polling results.

In shorthand, Kanto pokemon owned the top spots on the list because the most people think most highly of them. The poll is a good subsection of the public's (well the Pokemon playing public) opinion because of the large sample size.

No, it's overrated because a big portion of those voters never played beyond Gen1/2 so they never played with the newer pokemon and think anything after Gen 2 is stupid and uncreative so they never gave the newer pokemon a chance. And i said this just contributes to the overratedness of Gen 1, it means even before this poll Gen 1 was already extremely overrated and this poll just made it even more overrated.

Making assumptions without the data to back them up is poor statistical work. After all, you can't know what the interests of the voters are beyond being interested in Pokemon enough to vote on the poll. And considering both of these polls were on well known gaming sites, it would be conjecture to assume that a large enough portion of the voters to affect the results so dramatically as you claim were strictly Gen I players.

In addition, if they were Gen I / Gen II players as you claim, Gen II would have likely shown better results than it did. But that is strictly an educated guess on my part.

This list is legit because dragonite is rated higher than salamence, but it's bullshit because salamence is on the list at all.

More like "they elected the most overrated and boring Pokémon of all time"

Simple math indicates that isn't the case. Because if they were overrated and boring, they wouldn't have reached the top of the list considering the sheer number of votes.

This is yet another reason why I've zero hope for the Pokemon fandom.

It would be nice to know about the pool of voters. Like whether everyone who voted has played every generation of games (and if not, which they have played/haven't played) or whether there was just a large amount of older Pokemon fans deciding to vote on it bcos "nostalgia" and "childhood". Because if so, then that will have obviously skewed the results, as they won't have a clue about anything in the later games.

Still, not like I need a poll to tell me which are the overglorified Pokemon in the franchise. It's fairly obvious these days.

Don't need data to back it up, it's pretty obvious that a big portion of the voters were nostalgia blinded gen 1 fans. Also this poll means shit, of course nostalgia is going to blind people and make them vote on their favourite pokemon, doesn't mean those pokemon are the greatest or even good for that matter, this was clearly a contest for the most popular pokemon.

Well yes, it is a contest for most popular.

And ignoring data is just asinine.

Everyone, calm down. It's just a poll based on opinions. Besides, we all know the best Pokemon is Togekiss.

Step 1: Several Gen I Pokemon become popular.
Step 2: A bunch of people drop out after Gen I.
Step 3: A bunch of new fans show up.
Step 4: A poll is cast.
Step 5: People only vote on Pokemon they know.
Step 6: Ergo, Gen I wins.
Step [Unknown]: Several popular Pokemon receive Mega Evolutions, likely increasing their popularity even more.
