I need ideas

So, I'm learning this programming language (more specifically C++), and I'm having an exam later in May, so I decided that amongst other things, making (parts of) a game would be good exercise.

I can do the game mechanics pretty good, but I feel I need creative input on ideas for storyline, characters, races, locations etc. etc. to stop making it extremely bland and pretty boring. So to put it short, if you have any ideas whatsoever that you think could work, do go ahead and post them, it would help a lot. Mostly because between coding this and rehearsing to 5 exams, I don't have much time to sit down and write all sort of things like this.

A race called the whisperers. They are a group of mortals with strong magical powers who have lived for thousands of years and have to constantly whisper incantations in order to keep themselves alive. They are frail and usually wear hooded robes. Despite their weak body, their magical skills make them formidable opponents. Any magical sentient can become a whisperer as long as they fear death, but they are exiled from society as unnatural and have to live in their own enclave.
    H-con and MegaCharr like this.

How long have you been programming in general? Is this your first time?

Not really long enough for me to try a project of this scale, but I don't give a fuck about that. I have no time-frame on it whatsoever, so I can just take things as I go.

It's not my first time programming, no. I do pick up both syntax and general notions pretty quickly though. And what better way to learn than having a concrete problem and trying to solve it?

As to the topic of the blog, I don't mind mixing some futuristic elements with classic fantasy elements.

-A Strategy/Tactical RPG where you use Programs, firewalls, ect. to defeat viruses. NOT A SIM. Actual, System Shock or the likes virtual areas.

-An RPG about robots. Customize parts, coding, weapons, etc. upgrade them, Create them fuse them, and other wise find them, you get the idea.

-A good old, classic space shooter. Make it about a war with Communists/Fascists/Other misc. evil group of humans, set in a newly discovered planet in the Oort Cloud.

-Action game, play as a dragon. Grow, develop, defend your land from evil humans, forge equipment, go crazy with it.

If you do a game set in future, have some dude (or dudette) that invented time travel but hasn't figured out how it works exactly, so you keep meeting him in the wrong chronological order. Make him evil at some point in his timeline so you can suddenly battle him and hear his tragic backstory that made him evil while some time later you'll run into his friendly past self again, maybe even help him on a quest. Maybe trigger what made him evil which caused you to battle him a bit earlier. Then when all time-travel shenanigans are over he should become like your last party member. Or the game's final boss.

    Time travel is fun.

    Amnesia RPG.

Basically, your character loses their memories...and their experience points and level...at the beginning of each day, effectively reseting. However, Equipment and other items are stored, so the idea is "speed running"...by using good equipment and such, you can quickly level up at the beginning of each day to give yourself an edge, so the idea is to plan out each day to achieve a certain goal.

You should make a fan game. A Pokemon fan game.

In all seriousness, that's probably the best way to go for a person just wanting to program on a game. You wouldn't have to worry about graphical assets, audio, and in some cases even design (depending on how close to the source you stay), and just be able to focus on your problems by themselves. Theres loads of people with fan game ideas in this fan base that you could go off of, many of which would be eager to see their kinds of ideas implemented.

Of course if youve got that other talent with you in some way, then you can go on ahead with whatever.

Not a bad idea. However, it does cause some problems with potential team-mates. If they lose their memories every day, then they effectively forget why they're sticking together. It's not exactly what I had in mind, but it's a pretty cool idea if implemented properly nonetheless.

To be honest, that's pretty ... boring. Besides, those kind of things use already existing tools. I want to make my own game, not something that's just built around something else.

So are you going to go the future sci fi route or the fantasy route?
