Today is the birthday of one of my favorite animators ever, Masaaki Iwane! (Well, at least it is where I live. ._. )
For those that don't know who he is, he is a animator who has been animation director for a great number of episodes of the Pokemon TV series, and has done work in many of the movies, Pikachu shorts, and TV specials. Personally, I consider him to be the best animator on staff. His episodes are always consistently great and fun to watch. He has also played a part in inspiring me to want become an animator.
I've always loved and been fascinated by animation. I just do. I watch cartoons and anime more than anything else. Who knows how many hours of my life I've spent watching Cartoon Network, lol. Iwane, is however, one of the first animators I really learned to recognize and study. I remember watching some Pokemon episodes when I was younger and wondering to myself why certain episodes looked so good... The character's movements were more dynamic and more fluid. The lighting and shading were more detailed. Everything just looked... better. Well, eventually I discovered this Bulbagarden and found my answer: the old Animation Directors thread (back when it was still active XD). I learned that each episode had a different animation director and they all had differing styles and varying quality. I also noticed that a lot of people often mentioned Iwane and were quite fond of his episodes. Sure enough, I found out he had animated and worked on those episodes that I had liked so much... Eventually, I learned to recognize his distinct drawing traits and techniques. This led me to study other animators in both anime (like Hironori Tanaka, Norio Matsumoto, and Naotoshi Shida) and Western cartoons (like Tex Avery, Bob Clampett, John K, and Chuck Jones), and become even more interested in the technical parts of animation. So... yeah. XD
Happy birthday, Iwane-san! Thanks for all the work you've done. I hope you continue to draw for a long time.
