The Nintendo 2DS

Wow. No sooner than I finally get my hands on a 3DS (that was just two days ago), I hear that Nintendo's releasing this 2DS thing. It's essentially a 3DS without the 3D. This really did seem like a joke at first, and I imagine it still does to a lot of people.

However, upon thinking more about it, I think this might actually be a pretty good move by Nintendo. The 3D wasn't exactly a selling feature in the first place, especially with all the resulting headaches. On top of that, the system's being sold for a relatively inexpensive $130. Making the console more affordable by cutting out an unnecessary feature might lead to a lot more profit for Nintendo; until now, I thought the task of saving the 3DS would be left to games like Pokémon X and Y.

Oh, and the 2DS is being released on the same day as X and Y, XD. This will certainly make for a nice Christmas combo gift.

Pretty much the one thing I don't like about the 2DS is the fact that it isn't two-piece. I guess it's to make a more tablet-like feel, but I still don't like it. I like being able to close my 3DS, reducing the surface area and making it less likely to be knocked around. Also good for protecting the screens. Why they removed that part is beyond me.

Really, the tablet design is huge turnoff for me. Looks bulky and weird to play. I hate how big the XL is and really enjoy the first 3DS the most....but I think I'd buy an XL before that, even if the 2DS is cheaper and I don't use the 3D feature

This seems kinda odd but it's cheaper and plays 3DS games, meaning kids who's parents wont buy them a 3DS either because of the 3D or it's price might be able to have one. With the release date it seems kinda obvious they are trying to get people to buy it for their kids along with Pokemon X and Y, since Pokemon is a top seller for Nintendo or for anyone that really can't afford a 3DS and wants to play those or other 3DS games.

I have no real need for one, I don't mind the 3D, but it could be good for someone else.

Why would anyone want a 2ds which has the same size screens as a 3ds (not XL) and costs more than a 3ds (which can be picked up cheap and since when is 120$ budget). In fact I got a near mint 2nd hand 3ds xl with Super Mario bros 2 for cheaper than this thing just last week.

Seriously my main problem with the 3ds original was the fact it was smaller than the ds xl before it.

Who cares. The "Nintendo 2DS" is the "Nintendo DS" with a few extra features and without the ability to close it. Especially after my similar recent purchase of the 3DS, this feels like a step back. Yes, the 3D effect can become headache-inducing, but it's definitely a worthwhile feature.

    Pass.

You bought it for less than the suggested retail price. Congrats. That doesn't matter though. That is not how much the 3DS is "supposed" to sell for. Of course there will be stores selling the 2DS very cheaply to and I can bet it will always be cheaper than the 3DS (at least until production ends).

Anyway, I don't get the apparent hate this thing is getting. It's not aimed towards you. It's aimed at the parents of kids who want a 3DS but are too young to properly use 3D. Plus the parents save money while buying a more durable handheld, win win.
