Why we will see Misty in anime again?

It seems to me that certain number of fandom seems to be dead set convinced how this character will never return again in any shape or form, so i decided to write small blog about it explaining why such assumption doesn't hold ground on so many levels.

First and foremost their main argument is "character was absent for too long, its too late for him to return". Its true that Misty was absent for unusually long period of time(6 years and counting) but that doesn't mean writers wont have her appear in future when they decide its right time and how her return would hold some significance. In other words when they decide to do something with character, they will return her.

I believe writers already showed with random returns of some other older characters in past, how long absence doesn't stop them in any way to comeback at some point if they decide to make them relevant again. If decade old and minor characters like Jessibelle, Gary or Butch and Cassidy could return, there is no reason why someone much more popular and relevant to anime like Misty couldn't as well.

What, she was part of cast for less than half of anime total run? Last time i checked Tracey was main for one measly season and writers still made sure to acknowledge his existence in every following arc afterwards, never being forgotten.

Being long gone from cast doesn't erase fact how Misty is extremely popular as character even nowadays leaving big impact on anime series at some point and fandom as whole. Her departure caused quite a backlash and demand for return is huge, and seeing how unexpected returns of old time favorites tends to bring boost in ratings along with bringing some breeze of fresh air i doubt writers would miss on opportunity to gain some benefit from return of Misty character at some point.

Pokemon anime is still following Ash journey being set in same timeline and universe being treated as one big continuity, and as long complete revamp doesn't happen older traveling companions will always have chance to return.

Another tiny thing which some people forget is that Misty never received closure to her story. We saw her going on journey to become water master just to end up forced to go back to gym, taking care of it out of obligation and necessity.
She didn't come to fruition how to accomplish her dreams, goal was never fulfilled and many things about her past, fears, motivations and everything else which is standing on her way to go forward was left unexplored .

Her last known appearance was in Real Cleffa Hanger which in itself left several things unanswered about character. For start it revealed how Misty still has unfinished business in relationship with sisters as evidenced when talking to Max and she always viewed gym as job doing it out of necessity forcing it on herself because of not being able to count on Daisy and others. She felt it was her responsibility to take care of thins, and put her own dreams on hold. Way in which she initially reacted and from what was showed in hosos was writers way of giving message how her goal is still to become water pokemon master.
We don't know what are Misty future plans not being set if she will continue to be gym leader or decide to leave and pursue her goal of becoming master.
What i mean is that they left her story open, being undefined in what direction Misty will go ,not being set up what are her future plans compared to others like May, Brock or Dawn for example who precised what they intend to do with their lives.

Context of last known Misty appearance in regular series didn't seemed like something you would call character "final return", leaving message how at some point in future Misty is expected to return again. Fact that writers made her sent lure to Ash, have her show in High touch opening from DP series as well on Brock picture in DP special, served as indication how they don't want audience to forget character wasn't last we will see from her. So people can expect that Misty will return again, if anything than to have writers tie up loose ends.

Another very important thing is that Misty was first and original girl and because of that tiny little fact, she will never be forgotten having chance to comeback. As much as this may irritate some people its true, in every known show original characters are always bound to return at some point and receive recognition sooner or later, because they were present when show started setting path for future generations to come making anime popular and recognized worldwide.

For this reason solely Brock,Misty and Ash will always exist, because they were part of original trio becoming iconic and worldwide recognized as group.
One vital word, iconic.

Lastly, but not less important there also happens to exist interview with Masamitsu Hidaka on pokebeach which happened 3 years ago. For those not familiar with him, he was pokemon director until Battle Frontier and now works as storyboard artist for pokemon series. He said how Misty will probably never be main character ever again, but will continue to make cameo appearances like she did in past.
It was mentioned how she may comeback in similar manner like May did(for some tournament)or meeting up with Ash and group somewhere on road.

Generally very little attention is payed to that interview but this words came from someone who works for pokemon staff, being a lot more familiar with writers plans and how they work than any of us around here.

Writers tend to be very unorthodox when it comes to older characters and quite unpredictable too,so in reality you never know what you can expect from them. And i believe sooner or later we will see Misty comeback for cameo appearance again.

As main character probably not anymore, but i will be enough bold to say how even such thing isn't completely impossible in grand scheme of thinks. However for something like that to even be taken in consideration, only real chance is if writers break current pattern of constantly replacing characters and decide to reuse older characters again.

Similar how other anime like Bakugan or Inazuma Eleven go do. They bring back older characters even if they are gone for long periods updating them and taking to new directions. There characters from past become relevant again being given new role which influence current story and advance it.
Quite popular approach if i may say too, because anime at same time please all kind of fans making sure to not have older characters forgotten and brings unexpected twists to story by including them in show again, being developed more and influencing new characters story.

I think the most realistic possibility for return is if Game Freak one day touch upon Misty line from Generation II, where she said that she wanted to travel the world. I could easily see her being a tag partner (like Cheryl and the other characters from DPPT) in some future game. After all if minor rocket grunt from second generation could appear in 5th generation, someone much more important game wise could as well.

Either that or if writers decide to reunite original trio for ending season of pokemon, with purpose of things coming to full circle to emphasize better on show going back to its roots.

However in reality this probably wont happen ,but people can at very last expect that Misty will make cameo appearance at some point in future again.
Misty played very important role in show history, she was part of group which was responsible for pokemon becoming hit and demand for return id enormous.

Losing hope and everything is fine and everything, but imo its little naive to presume how writers will erase her completely from face of existence never to be seen again.
When they decide its optimal moment, they will include her in anime again.

Now feel free to tear me apart for thinking otherwise.:P

Well, maybe in the general sense and the direction of Ash's quest yeah, but lets be honest here; it most certainly makes a difference because different characters have varying effects on the story of each saga and they each appeal to different kinds of fans. I agree that the show moves on as it should but hey, I mean lets define moving on here. I'd define it broadly and simply as "doing something different". The timeframe, characters, development, plot etc are all ambiguous elements that are whatever the writers decide. But I have confidence that they're going to try and do things that their current (or potential aka past or future) audience will enjoy.

With that in mind, I don't trust every cycle to continue in the least without damaging the brand. That is to say, I think some things can and should stay the same but others must change to balance it. And you're right, Ash certainly does have a lot of companions and I think its healthy for the various cycles governing who he travels with, when they are introduced, how many, and for how long to change on occasion. Can the writers do [insert action here] with [insert character here]? Yes.

So what you're saying is you repeat yourself for your own sake? If that's the case, why not just write a personal note on your profile page or some other website/document on your computer?

So what was this blog about again? Oh yeah, Misty. She's basically part of the shows decade old history so she's acknowledged in openings and ending along with the rest of the older cast.

The writers don't seem to give Misty any more favoritism in terms of cameos or opening/ending appearances than anyone else, so what difference does it make?

I really don't see why you have constant need to underline how long character has been gone, and how old she is? Ash, TR, Brock and various other characters are decade old characters too, but this in no way alleviate their importance, impact they left on anime or popularity.
    And same applies to Misty.

The writers don't seem to give Misty any more favoritism in terms of cameos or opening/ending appearances than anyone else, so what difference does it make?
Than you should check out show history because so far out of all replaced characters Misty received more follow up and references than anyone else. Whether its Dawn, May, Brock, Tracey, Gary or Max.

She made two cameo appearances, starred in chronicles, appeared in various openings or endings like Spurt, High Touch, Bw season 2 ending, in queen of hearts along with Dehlia, was showed watching Ash competing in Hoenn league in two episodes, there were constant references to her in AG through handkerchief she gave to Ash, throwback to Cerulean gym when they met trainer which just arrived in Hoenn, through lure she sent through Oak in late BF or DP, along with appearing through speaking flashbacks in BW.

Accompanied with fact how Nintendo and Game Freak is making sure over the years to keep Kanto gym leaders relevant finding ways to introduce them in new games never getting outdated and receiving fresh marketing value to better promote games if situations calls for it.
No matter at what angle you look at it writers are making sure to references toward character to prevent it from ending forgotten showing how they care. We don't know how writers feel currently and if they have any plans for Misty in future. Writers constantly break patterns and change their mind. Few months ago no one thought Dawn would comeback for 8 episodes, receiving so many unexpected surprises with BW 2 and world tournament. 2 years ago no one expected that Brock will ever be replaced again, and yet impossible happened. No one expected to see Charizard rejoining Ash team leaving Charicific valley but it happened. Or Butterfree for who everyone though was dead and bury never to be seen again. Same applies to Clair and various other characters.

Its obvious writers are pandering to older fans toward such unexpected surprises and references to past, so its not reasonable to expect how Misty might come back eventually too with writing staff being aware how she is very popular character still having strong following with may asking for return.

Misty was first and original girl and because of that tiny little fact, she will never be forgotten having chance to comeback. In every known show original characters are always bound to return at some point and receive recognition sooner or later, because they were present when show started setting path for future generations to come making anime popular and recognized worldwide.

I really don't see why out of all previous characters you are always so much negative about Misty, making it seem like your trying to distinguish any speculation about possibility of her return. AS long character is popular ad have fans, as long writers throw references to him making sure to stay remembered and as long anime continues to air Misty will have chance to return just like anyone else.

    Its that simple.

Misty hasn't gotten anymore cameos than the rest of the cast in the main series:

    - Taken together, Misty only did appear in 4 AG episodes. She was literally only in the last 1 minute of "A Scheme Team" so I just count that with the next episode.

    - Misty was in Mastermind, but then again, so was May. Why is it counted as a "special" for Misty but not for May?

    - Misty is in the "High Touch" opening, but again, so is May, Max, Gary and Tracey. And May is right in the middle of the opening while Misty is stuck next to her and Gary.

    - Misty was in the photo's on Brock's wall in his special, but once again, so were May, Max and Dawn. So why are people not counting those as references to them?

    - Misty's in the current ending theme, but again, so is the entire main cast

    - Misty was showin in BW's Charizard flashbacks for the same reason she was in Battle Frontier's Charizard flashbacks, she and Brock simply existed in those episodes so they can't show them without showing who was there at the time. So again, you have to count them for references to Brock, Primeape, Squirtle, etc...because they're all in the flashbacks too.

    - In terms of hoso specials Misty did get 4 of them, but again I think Tracey's in around 7 of them. They certainly didn't focus on Misty more than anyone else.

    - The Misty lure only did appear in that one DP episode, and never again, even when Ash and co went fishing again after that. My guess is it was the writers way of bringing up Misty for the younger audience who just started watching DP, because otherwise Dawn never met Misty so there was no point in referencing her to her.

So overall, all of the times Misty were mentioned, all of Ash's other friends were brought up too, and the few times she did show up she didn't get any special treatment compared to the others.

And once again your missing the entire point. Fact that Misty was referenced in each region after her departure serves as proof how its not in interest among writing staff to have viewers forget about one of anime original characters. Those flashbacks, appearances through opening/endings, tokens like lure etc are way to remind audience of her and send message how she hasn't been forgotten.

As long writers keep her alive through references, as long she has fans which care wanting to see her back and as long this anime exist chances for Misty return will always be there which was focal point of blog and reason i created it in first place.

To send message how events which happened in past don't appoint future outcomes and what is going to happen in upcoming generations, with past patterns being constantly break.
Even more so when taken in account flexibility of her story not depending on game assets to comeback, unfinished plots centered around her with writers making things unclear about dreams and in what way things will pan out in future. Which makes it all that easier to get infiltrated within story of new regions.

As far as references go like i said compared to everyone else except Tracey writers still acknowledged more her existence than they did with others who left cast. Which while may not mean anything shows how producers and writers realize she was important character liked by many, not being in their intention to erase her.

So yes there will always exist hope and chance that we see her again, whenever that may be.

So you just ignored how I proved to you that every character has been referenced after they left the show? Tracey's appeared in at least one episode every region since Orange. May's been referenced in both DP and BW. Dawn just got the longest cameo return of any past character regardless if it wasn't anything special.

As the show progresses however outside of ending themes like the one we have now there's not much reason to bring this up.

I didn't ignore it, but i believe this was already covered in previous posts being showed how in comparison to other companions which left cast Misty still got more references and appearances than others rally did. When comparing number of references and throwbacks to Cerulean gym and misty in AG compared to amount of references to May and Max in DP after departure, or Brock and Dawn in BW numbers are more than enough self explanatory.

Regardless like i covered before both in Misty or any other character case as long they are referenced chances for return are up in air.

I agree that a character can appear at any time, but that doesn't mean its going to happen.

The DP saga went on for 4 years and 191 episodes. Yet in that entire timeframe the writers decided not to bring Misty back for even a single episode. There were so many DP fillers that could have been cut and turned into a short 4-episode arc for Misty, but it didn't happen.

Now with Best Wishes, the whole "reboot" aspect ignored all old characters till BW2 started. Then of course Dawn appeared because everyone knows the last gen girl will come back for another appearance. But now we're almost at the end of this gen, and even Brock wasn't brought back for a visit.

Just because the writers *can* bring back any old character means little if they don't have an interest in doing so. The show now is so far removed from what it was 16 years old that the writers could simply never have any of Ash's older friends show up again and it really makes no difference anymore.

But that's entire point. Even if they didn't had interest in doing so in past doesn't have any bearing on future ad how will things play out. Writers plans and decisions change constantly as they continue to write for series and 90% of return from previous characters, pokemon etc happen spontaneously as they go on with various factors and variables such as anime current popularity, games, current characters for which writers find presence of previous one would be applicable to help move story forward , or increase of interest to do more with older one determining whether someone will be returned or not.

I believe BW2 showed how writers have no qualms in reviving popular previous character and pokemon, regardless of how absent they may have been if they find their presence and formed popularity and iconic status could help increase already staggered ratings, create hype and excitement to lure in more fans toward this show and do more with its story giving to watchers sequel and chance to see those they like in action again.

And as such they could likely decide to use Misty again at some point due to amount of hype, positive reception and popularity her presence could extract.

Yes it may have passed a lot of time and things aren't same anymore, but being old doesn't really prevents writers from making something significant with previous characters becoming vital part of story again. You can always incorporate previous companion in story again playing valuable role, while making sure that his own story/career receives benefit from it as well.
It only depends on having right vision through which character could go forward.
