Is it just me or?

Is it just me or have fans became less attached to characters over time?
I remember back in day when Misty or May left cast how most people were disappointed, sometimes even shocked being sad to see their favorites go. Likewise whenever there was made tread about it in past majority was more welcomed toward their return than not wanting to see more, feeling how past companions weren't fleshed out as much as they could have been with there being left room to do much more. Which in reality is true because almost everyone story was left unresolved having potential to do more.

Naturally its needed to take in account how today one of reasons why people don't react same anymore about character replacing and constant cycling, is because they got used to it already knowing what is show policy growing to accept it.

But its not only that, back than judging by debates from veterans which left bulbgarden long time ago, fans seemed more passionate and emotional when discussing characters they like. They felt more invested in whole thing.

Nowdays everything feels static with most people seeming indifferent like they could care less. This can be noticed in not so long ago departures with Brock or Dawn with majority being stoic and completely neutral about it. On contrary people seemed more happy to see their back on door, and mindset which today prevails is more along the lines of being against older character returns which can be evidenced by threads made about it.
Its like fanbase became fed up with show and characters in general.

Its like people forgot how to enjoy in pokemon anime and characters anymore, only complaining and missing on reasons and everything good because of which they used to enjoy in it before.

I could be very well wrong, but on bulbagarden you can easily get such impression.

Because people have matured and gotten over things instead of beating a dead horse into the ground. They've come to terms with the fact that the cast is always changing and always will.

So not caring about character leaving means we forgot how to enjoy the show? Also I seek not the old but a new ideal I acquired but that's just me.

We still care about the newer characters. I personally want to see more of the DP cast than I do the others however, I can see why people aren't getting so passionate about wanting Hikari or Shinji back in comparion to say Kasumi or even Haruka. For one, the writers have become far better at sendoffs that don't leave the fan base annoyed. Whilst Kasumi's left in a way that reduced her chances of becoming a Water Pokemon Master (and many other things that have been said many times before), Hikari and Haruka left to go to new regions with hope in thier step but Haruka left with her rivals (that to some people hinted at a chance to see new adventures) and Shinji left renewed and planning to battle Jindai (which since it's being predicted is leading some people to hoping for a special hence there's more talk of a return of him.) With Takeshi too, people tend to see him as done hence even less talk. Secondly, we have matured over time and come to accept things. Thirdly, (I say with slightly high opinionness) Best Wishes writing sucks and we'd rather not see our favourites tainted by it (hence why Shinji talk is smaller than Haruka.) Dento seems to be the only one too fabulous to avoid it's usual faults.

Personally I enjoyed most of the main cast up to the end of AG because at that point it didn't seem like there would be endless new characters. Introducing a new female protagonist at some point made sense and May also helped portray the new "mature" Ash that he was going to be in AG. The Contests themselves were of course fresh and new at the time.

By the time Dawn was brought in we all knew there was going to be a cycle of female protagonists. Even back in 2006 when DP started, virtually everyone knew Dawn was just going to leave when DP ended. Dawn's intro in the show also more or less confirmed that old female protagonists would never return beyond cameo's.

Then as for Brock, everyone started wondering why he was being kept so long while the girls always left. His departure was inevitable IMO, it only happened later than expected. I remember most people thought Brock was going to leave at the end of AG, simply because the first DP poster showed Paul with Ash/Dawn and no Brock...back then it looked like Paul was going to be a travel companion.

As for now? Well Iris and Cilan have been introduced nearly 14 years into the series, we know what to expect. If both Iris and Cilan leave as soon as BW ends, not a single person in the fandom will be surprised or shocked.

So I goes the real question is; Why do people just accept things the way they are? I think people while "maturing" over time start to forget their preference and feedback actually helps determine what goes into the Pokemon franchise. They give up attachment to various things simply because they assume its going to change some way anyhow because that's just what the company naturally does with the franchise over time. I'll bet the reality is that very thought process, initiated by a massive number of fans, is sometimes why something changes in the first place. Because the company may have responded to the fact that people expected the change so they decided it was beneficial to do so. But doesn't that sometimes mean the decision might have been led by a false notion and thus actually lowered the quality of the show? Its something to think about. You know what, I just might write my first blog on this theory :).

I don't know if it's about attraction or just growing up but I know that since alot of older characters haven't been seen in a while, that maybe interest gets lost because new characters are on. Not that it's bad but the older ones already had their chance. Some more than others. Ash is the prime face of Pokemon but I know people are sick of him. However, since his goal is so broad and that he's the only one that does gymbattles(which is the game's main focus) that maybe it might be a good idea to finish the series with him.
Atleast pokemon is still available unlike most other animes. Do you know how much I used to obesses about Neo pets?

I think it is mostly because nowadays character departures are something normal with people accepting them and not getting upset over it, because they understand what formula this show follow not investing in characters so much like they used to. Since they are aware they will be gone anyway following route of previous companions, never to be seen again.

As for older ones having chance, i don't think its wrong in giving more development to all time favorites we used to like taking them in new directions. Its waste to let all those intriguing characters go to oblivion because it would be far more interesting if writers instead of erasing them never to be seen again, decided to reuse older characters at some point. Actually doing continuation of their story becoming relevant again, when plot would allow to have character both advance current story and receiving some benefit out of it himself too. By giving them new pokemon, clothes, subplots going in new, unknown directions.

One of biggest mistakes pokemon does imo is constant character replacing instead of investing more in those who proven to be successful. Many shows like One Piece, Ben 10, Naruto etc keep characters doing continuation of their growth having in end more stable cast and solidified storyline without losing their appeal.
