means you're "obviously trolling" and makes you deserving of multiple direct and indirect ad hominems.

I mean, why else would someone think differently than you, if not to obviously troll you? Surely it's not possible that people actually have a different opinion than you, right? I mean look at all those people around you, they all think the same, so that logically makes it impossible for someone else to think differently. You should totally troll them back, because how dare they troll you with their so-called "opinion".

Also internet discussions never seem to be able to be held without a good deal of ad hominems. I wonder what's up with that.
farewell, friend likes this.

This is not about BMGf by the way. It's just a phenonomon I noticed generally on the internet on multiple sites.

That would just help to justify them calling you a troll, kyu.

That is certainly a problem with the internet. A related issue on the online videogamer community is that there are a lot of people who cannot take criticism of videogames they like. Depending on what the criticism is, responses follow these modules: they have no idea what they're talking about/ they're too sensitive and want to ruin our fun/ they're obviously not a real [genre] player/ what you mentioned.

Interestingly enough, there have been numerous scientific studies done on the nature of human arguments which lead to some relevant conclusions.

I won't bore you with the details (because if I recall you read Cracked and the information I'm using comes from there) but there's a few things that allow you to see why people do what they do in this circumstance.

    1. Arguing evolved not as a way to seek truth, but as a way to 'win' and seek dominance over others. People aren't trying to make you realize that they're right about one issue or another when they post an argument / accuse you of trolling. They know subconciously that you aren't going to change your mind, just like they aren't going to change theirs. It's simply a way to proclaim dominance over that person.

    2. People tend to pick teams when they argue. Think of all the factions that exist in fandoms for certain works. Team Edward versus Team Jacob. Misty fans, May fans and Dawn fans. And when people pick a team, they become invested in that team. Like a sports team, they won't back down in an argument with the other team because they don't want to let their team down. They're willing to say things in order to help their team win (which again isn't about winning the argument, but about asserting dominance.

    3. In brain scan studies, when people read an article either for or against a position they care deeply about, the parts of the brain that control emotion are the ones that have jacked up activity, not the ones that dictate logic. Basically this means that people aren't even noticing the points behind what the other person says beyond either "this person thinks what I think. Support and praise" or "this person disagrees. Bash and insult"

If you're TL;DRing this (and I don't blame you), basically this is a human nature problem, not strictly an internet problem.

This is exactly why I try to stay out of the Anime section here.

@Santa in Plain Sight yeah, I read that in a cracked article some time ago as well. Point 1 is probably the case here, as there are always some people who get all high and mighty saying "I am not going to fall for your bait" and stuff.
