What is it that people don't understand about the word unique? How hard is it to understand that it means one of a kind? Just like it does in French, and it's Latin origin, unicus does. unicus stems from the root unus, meaning one.

Uniqueness is absolute. Either something is unique, or it isn't. It cannot possibly be both, or somewhere in between. "Relatively unique", is a perfect example of that. If it isn't one of a kind, then don't use Unique. Use "rare" or something

Unique is a very powerful word. Don't use it lightly. Treat it with respect and it doesn't need an explanation. Muddy the waters with improper usage and it'll lose it's meaning, and eventually we'll end up without a proper language at all.

So how do you define "proper language"? Because any language that's been around for a while is going to have some definition shift.

Good point. I was thinking more "cavespeak" vs. modern languages, rather than "technical, stuck up people" speak. Technically you could make a language with one word. It's still a language, but that doesn't mean it's any good for communication of messages.

And before someone says "binary", binary itself isn't especially good for communication, unless you are using it as a method of transmitting a "higher level" language, such as English.
