@$aturn¥oshi; (Mega Post incoming.) To better explain it, Persona 3 is a game where you play a blue haired dude (commonly named "Minato") who can summon multiple creatures known as Personas. The power of these Personas are derived from the relationships that you build from your social life as a high school student, so you're supposed to help the other people to develop Social Links. Each Social Link is related to a major arcana tarot card, and the representations of each card essentially tie in to the person in question (for example, the link between Minato and Yukari is the Lovers Arcana).
You join a group known as SEES (the "Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad") and investigate the nightly occurrence known as the Dark Hour where monsters known as Shadows appear. (During the Dark Hour, regular people are turned into coffins, but there are some people who retain their form, like those in SEES.)
At the beginning of the game, you sign a contract and speak with Igor (the pointy-nosed dude) and basically accept your destiny of stuff. It would be better if I explain the characters by appearance (or relevance). The third panel shows the members of SEES: Mitsuru, Yukari, Fuuka, Stupei Junpei, Akihiko, Ken, Koromaru (the dog) and Aigis. The entire group of SEES is tied to the Fool Arcana. Panel 10 shows the people of the Velvet Room, Igor and Elizabeth. Panel 14 shows Kenji, a fellow student whose social link revolves around the Magician Arcana, the arcana dealing with action and obtaining what one wants. Kenji tricks himself into believing that he and one of his teachers are in a romantic relationship. Once he finds out she's moving to avoid accusation, he fins out she's really getting married to another man and you have the option to be a douche and laugh at it. Panel 16 shows Fuuka, whose social link revolves around the Priestess Arcana, an arcana dealing with (feminine) knowledge. During her social link, she commonly cooks food for you, which doesn't taste very good. Panel 18 is Misturu, the student president whose social link revolves around the Empress Arcana, which deals with prosperity. I haven't a clue what her SL is, but she basically plays support for SEES. Panel 20 is Hidetoshi, his social link revolves around the Emperor Arcana, which deals with control. During his SL, he tries to bust this student who was smoking in the bathrooms. Panel 23 is Bunkichi and Mitsuko and their social link revolves around the Hierophant Arcana, which deals with education and authority. Their SL involves the Persimmon tree, which was planted by their son and his class (or something) who was a teacher that died. There's a bunch of drama about them trying to keep the tree from being cut down. Panel 24 is Yukari, Lovers Arcana. Pretty self-explanatory. Panel 26 is Kazushi, his SL revolves around the Chariot Arcana, which represents victory. He is a track dude who is trying to win the national whatever for his family member who can't walk. He doesn't quit when he injures his knee, nearly permanently damaging it. Panel 28 is Chihiro, her SL revolves around the Justice Arcana. She is accused of stealing money from the student council funds when it goes missing, and you have to prove her innocence and give her the courage to stand up for herself. Panel 31 is "Maya", she's your friend on an MMO that you can play on Sunday and junk. Her SL revolves around the Hermit Arcana. You just basically befriend her until the operators of the MMO close the server. She turns out to be a teacher at Minato's school. Panel 32 is Keisuke, his SL revolves around the Fortune Arcana. During his SL, he battles with his own identity vs what his father wants him to be; he desires to pursue art, but his dad wants him to be a doctor instead. Panel 34 is Yuko, a fellow track person, her SL revolves around the Strength Arcana. The comic is pretty self-explanatory to itself. Panel 36 is Maiko, her SL revolves around the Hanged Man Arcana, which deals with self-sacrifice. During her SL, she becomes worried about her parents' fighting and eventually finds out they're getting a divorce. She has the option to go with her dad, who isn't as angry, but decides to go with her mother, who she believes needs her more. She asks if it's her fault that her parents are fighting, so you have the option to be a douche again.
You should just play the rest of the game to find out what everything means, because it'll take forever to explain everything to you like this. The characters are really personified, so you'd have more fun exploring it yourself.
Or you could watch SuperJeenius's LP of it. It's pretty good.
