An Under-Appreciated Game That Needs More Attention

Come on, if you've played Super Smash Brothers Brawl, I GUARANTEE YOU you've seen these two before:

From what the character select says, you know that their names are Ness and Lucas. But I'm pretty sure 75% of you have NO IDEA of anything further than that.

This is where I come in to give this franchise more attention.

Ah yes, Earthbound. One of the many under-rated games out there. You've probably seen assist trophies and items from Earthbound in Brawl and such. Some of the items include the Franklin Badge, Mr. Saturn, and even Porky, a boss battle. Remember the ruined zoo, everyone?

Anyway, the plotline of each game is different. MOTHER and Earthbound shared many similarities, but MOTHER 3 was a game all its own.

The main idea of the three games is about children born with strange powers known as PSI that must use them to do something significant to each game.

SPOILERS FOR MOTHER 3:

In MOTHER 3, Lucas is trying to find his lost brother, Claus, through use of his PSI Powers. Along the way, he keeps running into the Pigmask Army, along with the mysterious Masked Man, who, as Lucas find out in the end, is actually...

HIS BROTHER. HE WAS FIGHTING HIS BROTHER THE WHOLE TIME.

now if that isn't sad, what it? MOTHER 3 was a great game, with an amazing plotline.

SPOILERS FOR EARTHBOUND:

Earthbound was the only one released officially in America, released on the SNES in America. The game is about a boy named Ness who embarks on a journey to save the planet from Giygas, warned when a falling meteor yields a warrior from ten years in the future named Buzz-Buzz, who traveled back in time to tell Ness that three boys and a girl will save the world. He obtains the sound stone and is told to find the 8 sanctuaries. Each sanctuary has a different boss and name, and yields another part of the Sound Stone song. After Ness meets Paula, Jeff, and Poo, they help him on his journey. After finding the 8 Sanctuaries, Ness goes into his dream world, Magicant, and must defeat the evil part of himself to obtain the power hidden within the sanctuaries.

Along with typical RPG-Style Standards, there's some twists:

-Each attack has different levels of power: PSI Alpha, PSI Beta, PSI Gamma, and PSI Omega. Omega is the strongest level, and PSI Rockin' Omega and PSI Starstorm Omega are tied for the strongest attack in the game.

-Items can be equipped for different damage levels, but rather than a sword and armor, you have...a frying pan and a ribbon? A baseball bat and a baseball cap? Rather than fire scrolls, you have...BOTTLE ROCKETS???

-Your next-door neighbor is one of the main antagonists???

-You have to save a girl from a cult obsessed with the color blue?

-Rid a town of its zombie problem?

-Fight a giant talking pile of vomit?

-Who names a game character Poo???

-And of course, the almighty Kraken...

-Monkeys with a bubble gum addiction...

Yeah, weird game, awesome plot and such.

I hope this blog helps more people learn about and want to try this amazing game. This is a very under-rated game that needs more attention.

The only thing good from it is my friend Paula got her name from Paula from EarthBound.

once there is a fan translation of earthbound I won't hestitate to download it. Like I did with fire emblem 6 (great game). But I'm not gonna play an rpg when I can't read anything.

edit: wait there is an English version of it? Then I guess I'll download it. Weird, melee and brawl always used to say it was Japan only.

I'll play it once Nintendo actually puts it on the VC, because I'm not spending ~$80 on the cartridge or going to my friend's house just to play it. That being said, I must be one of the few people who doesn't really see its charm anyway. Maybe I haven't given it enough of a chance, but it's typical RPG level grinding to me. :/

However, I don't think it's under-appreciated, as it seems to have a huge cult following; I think the primary issue is that access to it is limited since it's a fairly rare game (unless you're talking ROMs, but not everyone likes using those).

@Mijzelffan: Earthbound is the English version of Mother 2 (Mother being the Japanese name for the series). Mother 1 and Mother 3 were never released in English.

A classic! A unique storyline set in a more modern timeperiod of sorts than most RPG's, with a lot of quirky humor that makes you smile throughout the playing of the game. This was a game that I couldn't put down from start to finish, and I am glad that it exists.

Mother 1 also has never been officially released in the United States. It was completely translated by Nintendo of America though, and was almost released, but due to the NES starting to go out of style (the SNES was already out at this point), Mother 1 never saw the light of day in the United States.

Actually, there's a lot less fans then you would think. BTW, I got my copy of Earthbound by downloading a free SNES Emulator off the internet and then downloading the game. It works.
