And now we move on to Chapter 3, in which the trio partakes in a few practice battles.

Chapter 3: Red Vs. Violet

The start of this chapter goes on to explain why the starters of Tanko are somewhat unbalanced (44Hy got the best of Chompy with absurd ease, after all). All I knew when I started this was, there was not going to be the traditional starter trio of Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. No way in hell. Too ordinary of a start for a fic like this.

On that note, you'll notice that Violet nicknames her Pokémon. For years, I always thought I sucked at nicknames, so I barely ever attempted them. Having Violet nickname her Pokémon was an attempt on my part to improve my own nicknaming skills.

I was originally going to refer to the Pokémon Center nurses as Nurse Joy, but I opted to not go that way. I'm not exactly sure why I decided against it, to be honest with you. Instead, they're just referred to as nurses, with no names given.

Here we learn of Q, the evolved form of 44Hy. Now, at this point, I want to say that this fic is more or less an amalgamation of R/B and Y glitch Pokémon. No game lets you have a 44Hy and a .4 on the same team, as the former is Yellow only, and the latter is R/B only. All the glitch attacks' effects are taken from Red and Blue, though.

TM05 was a tough move to make sense of- the animation suggests that the user striking the opponent somehow caused no damage and yet increased evasion. In the end, I decided to make it so that the user charged at the foe, then pulled away at the last second and turned temporarily invisible. On another note, only during the move's debut does it feature a mystical blue aura. I dropped the aura from all subsequent uses of the attack, it seemed a bit... much.

Finally, Red catches on to what many of you will have undoubtedly already deduced- like Tanko's name itself, the towns and cities of Tanko are anagrams of their Kantoan counterparts. Talpel Town = Pallet Town, Ivadirin City = Viridian City, Bincanar Island = Cinnabar Island, and so forth.

Ivadirin Gym is closed when the group first arrives at it. Seems familiar, doesn't it? Yeah, some things never change.

I originally briefly considered giving Violet the fear of bugs, but in the end, I actually thought it would make a little more sense for Orange to be afraid of bugs. Violet just didn't strike me as the kind of person who would be afraid of bugs, though she does have a fear of her own which gets explored later on.

And Violet finally makes her first capture- Flutters the Caterpie. This is really where her thinking ahead shows, as she's giving her Caterpie a nickname that will suit it upon evolution into Butterfree.

And that's it for this chapter. Next time, we cover Chapter 4.
