Welcome back! Today, we cover Chapter 10, in which the trio arrives at the Ruceelna City Pokémon Gym, and begin battling for their second badges. Now then, without further ado, let's go!
Chapter 10: Walter, Water, Everywhere
As we open, I introduce the concept of freeze arches. Anyone else remember doing the Glitch City trick, seeing a cave entrance, walking into it, and suddenly being unable to move in any direction? Yeah, based these off of that. One of the more unusual aspects of the Tankoan landscape. On a side note, here it's revealed that Orange originally lived in Miliovern City, rather than Talpel Town.
Also, now 'M is introduced! I pronounce 'M like the letter m, by the way. Also, while I generally portray glitch Pokémon as though the sprites we see of them are frontal views of them, 'M and normal form Missingno., I see those sprites as being side views, facing to the player's left. The part that juts out of the lower left side of the sprite, I see that as the face. Look at the sprite carefully, you'll see what I mean.
And courtesy of Orange, the group wakes up bright and early for their Gym battles. At breakfast, Orange claims Violet to be an evenetarian. Basically the Tankoan equivalent of a vegetarian, because remember I said that all odd numbers correlate to meat, and all even numbers to fruits and vegetables (except zero, which correlates to bagels). She claims she's not an evenetarian, on the grounds that she doesn't choose to eat only even numbers, but rather she does so due to not liking the taste of odd numbers. Orange claims she's still an evenetarian because of how she eats, regardless of the reason. I'm not even sure which side is right with this one, to be honest with you. Also, I like how I had Violet get Orange to agree with her. Very sneaky.
I like how I portrayed Ruceelna Gym's doors, personally. Really goes with the whole Water-type Gym thing. I tried to give Walter kind of a surfer dude personality. Not completely sure I nailed it, though.
And the first battle is on! Violet vs. Walter, Chompy vs. Tentacool. Violet wins the first round with Chompy's Vine Whip, after which Walter brings out his second Pokémon, an LM4, whose Aurora Beam makes short work of the Bellsprout. Now Violet uses Migraine, and it is here where it becomes evident that, like with Misty's infamous Psyduck, Migraine can only use its Confusion attack when its headache is particularly severe. But Violet pulls out a win when LM4's Rolling Kick slams Migraine in the head, allowing for a KO with Confusion.
Now it's Orange vs. Walter! Spearow takes out Tentacool, though gets soaked in the process, allowing LM4 to pick it off with relative ease- its wings got so soggy that it was too heavy to fly. Now Orange decides to fight Fighting with Fighting, and brings out his own LM4. Orange gains an upper hand with his LM4's PoisonPowder, but when the two of them simultaneously use Quick Attack, things aren't looking so good for Orange's LM4...
...And then it evolves! This is why LM4 appear primarily in Moon Canyon, by the way- they are the original Clefairy pre-evolution. But Orange doesn't have a Clefairy for very long, however, for it promptly evolves into a Nidoking. Anyone else ever have the pleasure of evolving an LM4 into a Clefairy and then into a Nidoking? I know I have. Nidoking then makes quick work of its unevolved counterpart, earning Orange his Drench Badge.
And once again, as Red prepares for his battle, the chapter comes to a close. Join us next time when we cover Chapter 11!
