Well, now that they allow fanfiction in the blogs, I think this might be a good time to do something a little unique with a fanfic I've been writing. Some of you may recall seeing my fanfic, 404 Error, in the fanfic section, albeit incomplete. Well, it's actually finished, with an epilogue and everything, only you'd only know this if you've been following the story on Serebii or fanfiction.net. I've been neglecting to update the story here on Bulbagarden, but if you ever wanted to catch up, it's only too easy to do so.
Anyway, what we're doing here is, I'll be posting a series of blog posts, each one containing my commentary on an individual chapter. There will be 39 posts in all, including this one- one for every chapter, and one for the epilogue. All right, so, without further ado, let's do this thing!
Chapter 1: A New Adventure
Right away, I can tell you that I had a little trouble thinking of the chapter title. Not exactly the strongest start, but I feel what it turned out to be gets the point across decently enough.
I tried to set the scene to portray right away that this world is not the Pokémon world as we know it to be, but rather a scrambled, corrupted version of it. How many of you have done that Glitch City trick? The end result of that is what I tried to convey here. That's what the Tanko region is- the world we go to when we do the Glitch City trick. Even the name of the region is a corruption of Kanto, much like the region itself- rearrange Tanko (or just switch the "t" and the "k") and you get Kanto.
I wanted fitting names for the protagonists here. Given that in Kanto, we have Red, Blue, and Green, I named the male protagonist Orange, and the female protagonist Violet. Why Orange and Violet? Look at a Missingno.'s sprite. The normal form, I mean, not the ghost or skeleton forms. Aside from black and white, what colors do you see? That's right, orange and purple. You will be pleased to know I never once considered "Purple" as Violet's name, by the way.
Now we come to the subject of Tanko's starter Pokémon. I wanted to maintain the Grass/Fire/Water triangle, but I also wanted to use Pokémon that would retain those types upon evolution. I originally considered Exeggcute as a starter, so each starter would only evolve once, but I decided against it in the end. Call me a sucker for Poison types if you will, you wouldn't be wrong... plus, we already had one of these starters be part Psychic, and given how broken Psychic types were back in the days of RBY, I didn't want two of them.
44Hy was an obvious choice for a starter- how many other glitch Pokémon evolve into another glitch Pokémon, at a level below 100, and retain the exact same type combination, huh? It was almost too perfect.
I tried to establish Orange and Violet's personalities right off the bat. Orange is hasty and impulsive. He is somewhat prone to making mistakes because he rushes into things, and he is often an irritation to those who hang out with him. Violet, on the other hand, tends to think ahead. She doesn't rush decisions, and takes possible future events into account for things. She also gets annoyed rather easily, but she's also stubborn. As you can see, she and Orange tend to butt heads somewhat frequently, and yet, they've been friends since childhood.
Oh, yes, take note of the mention of Orange's pet Pikachu. Shockey is in fact the nickname I gave to my very first Pokémon- the Pikachu I started with in Yellow. I wanted to name it after Ritchie's Pikachu, but I was 10, I didn't remember those episodes too well... you get the idea.
One of my favorite things about writing this fic was the glitch Pokémon, though those of you who know me should not be particularly surprised by this. It was fun to write their Pokédex entries, and come up with their behavior, how they moved around, and even their cries. I sometimes like to imagine how glitch Pokémon could be portrayed in the anime, and those thoughts were put to good use in this fic. 44Hy's Pokédex entry is in fact based off its types, Water and Psychic. By the way, I pronounce it "four four hi", in case any of you were wondering.
I also took great liberties with the sizes and weights of the glitch Pokémon. 44Hy's dex entry mentions that the largest known specimen was recorded at 23 feet tall, which references the official height the Pokédex lists for it. Obviously, I'm not gonna be giving anyone a freaking 23-foot-tall starter, no way in hell. So yeah, I basically just shrunk down a lot of glitch Pokémon.
And that'll do it for this chapter. Stay tuned for Chapter 2!
