After pumping just over 80 hours into this game, and completing every main and side quest, I present my…

Fallout 3 Review

During Fallout 3, your choices take a big role. The choices can affect how your character is formed, who you can play with, and whether or not you’ll make some new enemies. Right when you escape from the vault, you’re thrust into a major decision, whether or not you want to activate a nuclear bomb and destroy a town. If you’re playing a goodie-two shoes, you obviously disarm the bomb. For those who want to join the dark side, you can choose to set some charges, retreat to a safe location, and watch the “marvelous fireworks”. This isn’t the only choice in Fallout 3, but only the beginning on your wasteland journey.

Story

In Fallout 3, you take the roll of the "Lone Wanderer" (as you're revered to by various NPC's), a vault dweller who escapes from Vault-Tec Vault 101. Once venturing into the post-apocalyptic Capital Wasteland, you have a few choices. You can either follow the main quest and search for your father, or take on some side quests and get some cool weapons and armor. You do find your father eventually, and help him restart Project Purity (a project to help provide pure water to the Capital Wasteland). However, the Enclave (the remnants of the US government) soon comes in to claim the project for their self, hoping to wipe out all un-pure life. And while this does include the Super Mutants and Ghouls, it also includes most of the remaining human population, leaving only the Enclave and Vault Dwellers.

After escaping to the Citadel, built into the ruins of the Pentagon, the character sets out on a series of missions to retrieve the final component to the project, from another Vault. Yet again, the Enclave interferes and captures the hero. After once more escaping the Enclave, the player sets to take back Project Purity, this time with a little help. The help comes from Liberty Prime, who wants to “liberate Alaska from those Chinese commies”. The Lone Wanderer then finds himself back in the Jefferson Memorial rotunda. Without the DLC, Broken Steel, the story finishes here. The game ends the same way the player plays the game, which is, with whatever choice you decide to make.

Characters

The main characters in Fallout 3 vary from Vault Dwellers, to radio personality Three Dog, who helps the player, find their father in the main quest. He also comments on the Lone Wanderers progress throughout the game, depending in the player’s Karma level. There are other types of characters as well. The most important ones, as said, assist in the main quest. There’s also NPC’s who give side quests, information, or items to the player.

Enemies

Depending on the player's level, there are different enemies who oppose the player. At earlier levels, it's mainly small packs of vicious dogs, and raiders. As the levels increase, the enemies go to Mirelurks and Super Mutants, to increased ranks, such as Mirelurk Hunters and Super Mutant Masters as the player continues to level.

Followers

There is select few NPC's who can accompany the player on their journey. There's a dog, a Brotherhood of Steel soldier, a slave, a former raider, a Ghoul, a Super Mutant, a childhood bully, and a robot. Only 2 may follow at once though. These followers can be equipped with any weapons or armor the player wants, and carry equipment if the player has too much at once. Depending on playing style, different followers are better suited. Karma plays a role here, with most followers only choosing to join you if you suit their requirements.

Other NPC's

In Fallout 3, there’s more than the main NPC’s and your followers. There are also the random wastelanders, townspeople, and merchants. Wastelanders, who usually appear in random encounters, are either fighting a creature, or may give you something. Townspeople aren’t extremely important either, but if something goes wrong, they’ll let you know. Also, townspeople can sometimes give side quests, or offer some info. Merchants are the most important of these. They can buy, sell, and even repair equipment if your repair skill isn’t high enough, or just don’t have the spare parts.

Gameplay/Features

There are a number of features in Fallout 3. One is the degrade/repair system for weapons and armor. While in combat, or just from use, your equipment will start to degrade. However, these can be repaired by either certain NPCs, or the player, depending on the repair skill of the player and whether the player has spare parts (i.e., if a player has two Chinese Assault Rifles, one may be repaired using the other, increasing its damage).

Another feature is V.A.T.S., or Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System, is just what is says it is. The aiming system allows the player to aim at specific parts, allowing a few landing shots to cripple the body part, and shows the percent that you will hit it. In V.A.T.S. you can also target multiple enemies, see the enemy’s health bar, and how much damage the shot will do.

“What goes around, comes around” indeed. In Fallout 3, as in previous games, Karma plays a roll. Depending on how you play the game, and certain actions taken, your karma can range from Very Good to Very Evil, with 3 ranks in between. The player’s karma affects different events in gameplay. Karma is a requirement for choosing a follower (some require a Good rating, while another may need a Neutral level). Also, if the player’s Karma rises into the Good range, or lowers into the Bad range, certain mercenaries are hired to come after the player.

Controls

The controls of Fallout 3 are pretty basic, and while unoriginal, does the job well. The controls are pretty standard, featuring analog sticks to move, A/Y/X/B to interact/jump/reload/light. B also activates your Pip-Boy 3000, the device used to access status, statistics, inventory, as well as some other things. The controls are picked up easily, thus can work for both new and experienced players.

Then there’s camera angle. Whether you like first or third person, you can play the way you want. Simply by pressing the left bumper (360), you switch from the first person perspective to third, and vice-versa. V.A.T.S also offers different camera angles once the shots are fired. It can offer a long shot on the player, or looking at the enemy. It can sometimes even follow the bullet as it flies through the air and into the foe.

Graphics

The graphics of Fallout 3 are done well, and are taken advantage with the consoles it was released for. While set over 250 years into the future, it still manages to be realistic. The DC ruins still show scenes of the pre-war monuments, well, whatever is left of them.
Though, there are some negatives with graphics. Glitches aren’t as rare as they should be, and it’s possible to become stuck, and even fall through floors on occasion. While some glitches are expected in all games, the number is a bit high in this case.

Sound

The music of Fallout 3 depends on, like most of the game, choice. The default sounds is simply silence, with the occasional sound effects (like the eerie creaking of a merry-go-round). But the real game music is accessed by your Pip-Boy radio. There are a number of stations, but only 2 (later 3 with a side quest) actually feature music, the rest are just for quests or for show. The radio stations are Enclave radio and Galaxy Radio. There also is a third radio station, which broadcasts an elderly woman playing her violin. This radio station is a bit harder to obtain, because you first have to complete the necessary side quest. These stations can stretch to every corner of the wasteland (well, GNR needs some help first).

Enclave radio plays mainly “propaganda”, including President Eden’s speeches, a nod at FDR’s fireside chats, as well as some patriotic tunes. Eden also mentions what America used to be like, commenting on the former baseball teams.

Meanwhile, GNR consists of a variety of things, including Three Dog, the founder and DJ of GNR (despite him not knowing what a disc is). Of course GNR has music, but, it is music from the earlier half of the twentieth century. Some titles that are aired are I Don’t Want to Set the World on Fire and Anything Goes. But along with that, Three Dog comments on the player and his or her progress and actions.

Regardless of which station you choose to listen to, or if you even want to listen to a station, the music certainly adds to the game in a positive way.

Overall Fallout 3 features many hours of gameplay, which of course can be altered depending on how the game is played. There are some flaws present, as with every game. Despite the glitches, Fallout 3 is a fantastic game, worthy of picking it up, or at least a renting.

Final Score: 9/10

+ Pros +
+ Exceptional story mode, plenty to keep busy on
+ Large map to explore

- Cons -
- Without Broken Steel, game ends at final main quest, can’t continue to explore/finish side quests
- Numerous glitches, so you'll need to save often
