Pokemon websites I visit over the last 10 years

Rate this Entry
Serebii: The first pokemon site I ever really visited. It has the biggest community of users, both good and bad, but I've visited the site since 2002/2003 and never had a problem. I enjoy posting there because it has the largest community of fans.

Bulbagarden: Very good community and Bulbapedia is informative. I've been here since 2002 as a lurker but didn't come up with my current username since 2005. A lot of the original community is gone now but I guess that is to be expected out of a long running franchise where people grow up and move on from the Pokemon franchise. I wish some of the older guys could come back, but alas, everyone, "grew up" so to speak.

Dogasu's backpack: What more can be said about a site that's mainly episode comparisons? Dogasu is the first member of the Pokemon fandom I really took interest in since all the dub edits intrigued me back when the 4kids era was going on. I've visited the site for nearly 10 years, hopefully I can continue for the next 10. Dogasu himself is also great and I find myself agreeing with his opinions on the anime more often than not.

Pokecommunity: Meh. I never really bothered with this place because I was always on Serebii/Bulbagarden. From what I've seen I'll have to say, "no" and leave it at that.

Pokebeach: Eh, nothing special. I'm not into the trading cards so I never spent much time there. The forums consist of people who have no clue what the franchise is about either.

pocketmonsters.net: Awful website, probably the worst of the "hardcore" pokemon websites. Adamant however is great, and he puts in a lot of hard work there, but its a shame everything else about that community is horrible. Probably the worst overall, "opinions" I've ever heard about the Pokemon franchise can be found there. The community is very bias toward certain aspects of the franchise and it shows. I don't know how Adamant puts up with it, his hard work is better served elsewhere and letting that place rot.

That's about it. I've never bothered with any other Pokemon websites.

My favorites would have to be either Serebii, or PokeCommunity. I agree with a lot of people on those sites regarding their views on the Pokemon Anime, games, manga, and such.

Worst is Pokebeach for me. Don't like WPM (he's here, too), and you said it best yourself: "The forums consist of people who have no clue what the franchise is about either." Also dislike pocketmonsters.net, but I can stomach it more than Pokebeach myself.

I'm okay with Bulbagarden. Community is mostly friendly, and Bulbapedia is very informative.

Dogasu's Backpack is good for laughs whenever he mocks 4Kids or TPCi, especially his rants about the pointless edits made in the 4Kids dub, since they never really bothered me. "The Suckiness of Sarah Natochenny" had me laughing for days on end when he reviewed "Wheel of Frontier!"...xD.

From what I remember I was turned off by Pokecommunity because it felt like mostly young kids were there, even more than Serebii. There's also a shitload of complaining over there about everything, much moreso than anywhere else. I find it hard to believe the people there are actually, "Pokemon fans" with the amount of whining about everything.

I noticed you limited your websites to the past 10 years. I was a very active poster on some sites at least 12-13 years ago (the vast majority have gone defunct):

Pokémon Abode- My most active community at the time. My old username was MoLtReS146. Run by PokéAbode Man, or "Bodey" for short, and had a major staff artist called Raichupacabra ("Chupa"). The biggest drawing point was the message board, and the community was close-knit and grew to accept you as family if you posted enough without being a spammer/troll. (There were a couple notable spammers there, Articuno of the Sky/AOTS, and his friend SlugBoy.) There was a board about the games, a board about the anime, and even a poll board and a "Sushi House" with some great off-topic stories and a little bit of RPing. (I remember one thread about sushi mutating and attacking everything, that was such a fun time!)

The rest of the site had a little bit of info about the "new" Gold and Silver games, and there were some fanmade minigames and parodies also.

The site went down several years later, but some of Chupa's artwork for fakémon are on Serebii today.

Universal Pokémon Network/ UPNetwork/ UPN- Another big community run by Jaxel. It had a ton of members. I posted on it less frequently, but I remember they had a notorius spammer named Marril 7 who kept saying "lalalalalalala" and kept coming back with new usernames, even when he was IP banned multiple times.

UPNetwork was sometimes considered a "rival" to the Abode, but there was usually no bad blood. (Their relationship is akin to Bulbagarden and Serebii in the current era.)

Pojo- TCG info site. I consulted it a lot. They still exist somewhat, but focus on other collectable card games.

Psychic Pokémon Connection/ Psypoke- I went there for lots of anime and release date info. That's where I found many movie screenshots for the first time and got really excited over them.

Bulbagarden- It was there, but didn't have much of interest before Bulbapedia.

    Serebii- Very up-and-coming.

Spearow's Pokémon Page- Absolute cesspool of a forum, which was all it was. It was unmoderated and the vast majority of posters wrote either vulgar stuff or true spam. You didn't need to register, just make up a name and go!

There were some other sites I visited back then, like another big page I forget the name of (I think it had an Ivilliage domain name), and lots of personal homepages made by kids because that was the cool thing to do back then.

Now I'm mostly on Bulbagarden and Facebook fan pages, with the occasional forays on to Serebii, Marriland, PKMNCollectors, and others.

I have both fond and bitter memories of SPPf. The trolls, elitists, and self-proclaimed "cool kids" on Serebii started to get to me. Not going to lie though, I wasn't exactly helping, but I got past that immature phase. I blame BattleFranky~40. On top of that, the very long period where it took every page over 30 seconds to load was where I lost my motivation to keep posting there, even though it was my very first Pokemon forum. Not worth it. I also miss Chris. He was a cool and level-headed mod/admin. And one of those few members that had common sense. God bless his deeds in the horrid Alternate Anime and Video Games section (I follow him on his YouTube channel and Twitter account, though, and he's a happier person on those than he ever was on SPPf. Don't blame the guy...). I still lurk and post from time to time, I suppose... And without SPPf, I would have never met @Captain Blue, his girlfriend, @Blazing Charmander, etc. on my first indulgence of the old PokeShipping thread.

Pokemon Community had a friendly community, but it was hard to hold a decent discussion there. The whole ignorance to Red's counterparts thing is the strongest there out of all the general franchise-focused Pokemon sites.

Never bothered with PokeBeach or Smogon. A mix of not liking WPM and not being too much into the TCG for the former, and not being much of a metagamer for the latter.

One forum-less site that gets a mention from me is Kokowa Dokoda, a nice nice dedicated to my favorite Pokemon, Mewtwo. Exposed me to a part of the franchise that still moves me to this day.

My problem with Pokecommunity is all the people there were whining about idiocy, moreso than any other pokemon forum. Especially the anime section, its like nobody there knows the way the show works.

I suppose the difference is Bulbagarden and Serebii have a lot of the hardcore anime fans who follow the Japanese version, while Pokecommunity doesn't, and most of them have no clue what the anime is supposed to be about.

I've been on here, Serebii, and Pokebeach. Out of those three, I'd say I like here best. Pokebeach isn't really active enough for me (it's only really active in certain sections, and never usually the ones I like), and Serebii can be the exact opposite sometimes, where you can blink and certain threads have gone by several pages to the point where it's hard to have a conversation. Also Serebii can feel a lot more restrictive in some ways.

Serebii has some awesome fanfiction. Pokecommunity has awesome rom hacks and fan games. Pokemonelite2000 used to have awesome rolepalaying, but sadly died down just last year. This place? Well, the people are nice...

I gotta say, though... About those kids...

WELCOME TO THE TARGET DEMOGRAPHIC, DUDES!

So does anyone here actually visit pocketmonsters? I think the site and its community are complete crap, but I want to hear from someone who may like it there.

From what I heard the site is run by several ex-Bulbagarden staff like Sunain and PPNSteve.
