My view on the whole SOVA/original trio thing

Although this was a long time ago now, back in 2006 when the the PUSA dub started for the first time, there was a group on the forums called SOVA who thought they could petition to get the 4kids VA's back.

They were admirable in their efforts and at the beginning I supported them. Voice changes in any cartoon are usually for the negative, and at the beginning the PUSA VA's weren't used to their roles. Unfortunately given the group was disorganized and comprised mostly of teenagers, their efforts never came together and PUSA probably never even knew (or cared) they existed. Its now been 6 years since the VA change, so obviously at this point its a lost cause.

This is pre-BW, so we didn't know about Iris or Cilan yet. Back then, people thought since Rachael Lilis voiced Maylene in DP, that she would also have a shot of voicing Jessie again. Of course that wasn't going to happen. But why did they think that Rachael Lilis would reprise Misty? For one thing, Misty has only ever appeared once over the 6 years PUSA dubbed the show, in the infamous and dreaded Mastermind special. Given that Misty no longer appears in the anime, what was Rachael Lilis supposed to reprise?

When BW started and Brock left too, it looked even more ridiculous. 90% of the older cast is now gone, so what is there for the old VA's to do again? Ash, Jessie and James, the latter two who don't even show up in most episodes anymore, are the only older characters left. As we know Meowth sadly no longer has a prior VA due to Maddie's unfortunate passing.

As for a "redub" of DP, I don't think PUSA would ever go back and record voice work for 190 completed episodes that are old news at this point.

Lastly, SOVA was obviously directed at fans of the original trio. Of course since most of the DP characters had no 4kids VA, they couldn't be considered. But even the AG characters, whenever Veronica Taylor was mentioned, nobody brought up May whatsoever. Although May's new voice was probably the best received of all the PUSA voices, the fact that Veronica Taylor was only mentioned in regards to Ash says a lot. This was basically for the Kanto/Johto cast, what happened with later characters no longer matters/

The original trio of course would never be reunited, as anyone who has been part of the fandom for 9 years would know, and the Takeshi Shudo blogs later confirmed it for everyone. Misty was never intended to return to the series even back when she originally left in 2002. This would be followed by Brock's departure, who for the most part, a lot of people felt was going to happen sooner or later.

The Johto saga marked the end of a lot of things in the anime, and had the 4kids VA's not also dubbed all of Hoenn, they would have only been associated with the first 5 years of the show. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if the 4kids voices *didn't* continue into Hoenn, then they would have *really* only been considered for the original cast.

The Pokemon anime is not aimed at 20+ year old adults who grew up with Kanto from 12 years ago, so I don't know where the belief that Misty, Charizard, 4kids, Veronica Taylor were all going to return to the series at some point. Its time to move on.
I... agree with you. I was a member of the SOVA group on Facebook, but I left when I realized we weren't going to accomplish anything.
I do want Veronica to reprise her role as Ash, though, but I know it won't happen. :-(
I have to agree with him too. I really don't like the current voices (some of them are plain horrific and not appropriate in the least), but logically speaking, it's been 7 years now. I wish Veronica would reprise Ash and so would the other original VAs, but it's a moot point considering how much the series itself has changed since the cast switch. It would definitely make things more enjoyable for me, though.

While I do share the sentiment SOVA has that the original voice actors were probably the best for the anime's dub and the original protagonist trio was my favorite too, I've accepted the original VAs aren't coming back unless by some miracle one of the current VAs decides to leave the show altogether (which has a < 0.01% chance of occurring). And as much as I despise what many (not all) of the current VAs have done to the dub, I don't want them to go through what the original VAs went through: two wrongs don't make a right, so to speak.

It's the new generation's show now, and it's not mine anymore. That's the truth when we get down to it. I think the show has gone downhill in general, though, and nostalgia is not the reason for my judgment. It's time to accept that the show has changed (for better or worse, that's entirely opinion), and move on in my case. I will say I enjoyed DP and BW for different things, I'm glad I stuck around anyway because I got to meet some cool Pokemon fans in the process, but it's just not the same for me anymore.

A friend recently told me this: Reggie FINALLY decided to put Earthbound on the Wii U's virtual console after a lot of demanding from Earthbound fans on Miiverse (people had been begging for Earthbound on VC since the Wii first came out).

What does this have to do with SOVA? It shows that all hope is not lost. In the case of SOVA, there's no language barrier, unlike with the Brock/Misty petitions.

Putting a game on a VC is a lot easier than redubbing like 400 episodes.

Do you realize how many episodes Battle Frontier, DP and BW is combined?

Actually, I would look more to Operation Rainfall and their progress with getting some games dubbed than getting Earthbound on VC. Redubbing past episodes, as cool as it would be, would be an insufficient means to reconcile with the fandom. Rehiring for the current production should come first.

Uh no, most of the old main cast is gone now and if Team Rocket leaves at the end of BW, then Ash is the only character left with a prior voice.

Redubbing the episodes when most of the older cast was still around made more sense. The DP and BW characters never had any 4kids voices, so there's nothing to even redub there.

You are? You just got here :P. Anyways, I think its clear we're not on the subject of redubbing. Thing is, it doesn't really matter who gets dropped, SOVA will continue as long as at least one role is still ongoing for one of the three main actors to take. If both TR and Ash were to leave, we'd likely go on hiatus and we could go support whatever save Ash/TR group inevitably begins somewhere. Then if any characters get cameos or returns, we'd go back to supporting their respective actor. The philosophy is, as grim as things might get there's no such thing as permanent failure. People ought to not worry about what ifs and simply do what they can, when they can. Its as simple as that.

Whoops, wrong thread/blog, I actually brought up working petitions on another thread/blog, and replied to the incorrect one, the point still remains, though.

Also, Family Guy got canceled 2 times, and was only brought back because of a petition each time. Yes, its popular, but back then, it wasn't nearly as popular as it was now, it was overshadowed by other shows on the network.

I'm pretty sure Futurama was also brought back from cancellation because of a petition.

No one else thought FG/Futurama could be brought back. The Misty thing may not happen (at least because of petitions), but 4kids coming back has a better chance.

I think the most important part that comes from all this is that fans are trying to reach out and connect with the people in the business who are either providing the product, or helping to. Putting aside the subjective reasonability of each persons expectations, I believe that every fan is justified in holding some kind of standard for what they want from Pokemon because that itself helps them understand who we really are and how best to continue driving the franchise we all know and love. Whatever the outcome of these campaigns for stuff like VA's, and Misty, and even those clamoring for or against keeping Ash around, the bottom line is that better communication = better Pokemon. At least, that's what many fans hope for and why its good to even have hope that something positive will come in the end.

4kids itself went bankrupt back in 2012.

Veronica Taylor coming back for Ash seems unlikely after 7 years, but whatever. He's the only real older character still left on the show.

Not entirely accurate, as they are no longer bankrupt, though are no longer 4kids, but 4Licensing.

I believe she means the actors, not the company itself. So far, most of them are still involved with acting or at least show continued interest in it (like Eric who attends cons and does an occasional gig). I still feel bad for the company though, I mean some people hate em' for nitpicky and stupid edits but regardless, they still brought us good shows that we wouldn't have in America otherwise. I'm sure they were all proud to have had the honor of doing Pokemon.

It would be very interesting if some of the major 4kids actors were given a few new roles too since they all have over a decade of experience in their industry.

    My opinion about them?

To put it bluntly, 4Kids put more "heart" into the way they handled the dub than TPCi has. They actually knew how to direct the main VA cast in a way that made them very genuine and emotionally intriguing. They made things very relatable and seemed very passionate about their work, even releasing soundtracks of music solely made for the dub at one point.

Can a company like 4Kids really be the devil or ultimate killer of anime? I don't think so. I think Alfred A. Kahn was the real problem with 4Kids. Beneath the crap, there was a company with a lot of potential...and a company that did the English dub of Pokémon real justice. In a way their successors have time and again fallen flat on their faces trying to do.

I do think the company made some truly terrible decisions, and should have never touched One Piece, yet...I truly think that more than anything else...their hearts were in the right place. And it really shows as I watch their Pokémon dub again. The depth exhibited by their music, dialogue, and voice actors is uncanny.

To be honest, I truly feel TPCi is not the company that has done justice to the English Pokémon dub: I think it was...yep, I'm going to say it...4Kids. Of course the edits they did were stupid, of course I knew that was an onigiri/riceball and LMAO at how 4Kids tried to censor it, of course I thought the cracker and sandwich were badly edited (moreso the cracker) in the Hoenn dub...but they brought a touch of humanity that really makes their dub stand out to me. For what it's worth, I am looking back and seeing that they weren't bad at all. In fact, I think they were quite good. But I guess it's just me.
Not entirely accurate, as they are no longer bankrupt, though are no longer 4kids, but 4Licensing.
Thing is, they no longer produce anime dubs. They've gone into sports merchandising and stuff. I respect their choice. It's rather sad to me, as I definitely did see potential in them as a dubbing company with Pokémon, Ultimate Muscle, and Shaman King. Despite the editing, I did think their original YGO dub was decent, too.

Shame their horrific One Piece, Sonic X, Tokyo Mew Mew, and other dubs overshadowed their better dubs in the anime community...tbh, while I obviously prefer the FUNimation dub of One Piece, that show has never been this amazing thing the anime community has made it out to be to me. I've never been that a big fan of Eiichiro Oda's art style. I'm a much bigger fan of Dragonball and Toriyama's work.
