My view on the whole SOVA/original trio thing

Although this was a long time ago now, back in 2006 when the the PUSA dub started for the first time, there was a group on the forums called SOVA who thought they could petition to get the 4kids VA's back.

They were admirable in their efforts and at the beginning I supported them. Voice changes in any cartoon are usually for the negative, and at the beginning the PUSA VA's weren't used to their roles. Unfortunately given the group was disorganized and comprised mostly of teenagers, their efforts never came together and PUSA probably never even knew (or cared) they existed. Its now been 6 years since the VA change, so obviously at this point its a lost cause.

This is pre-BW, so we didn't know about Iris or Cilan yet. Back then, people thought since Rachael Lilis voiced Maylene in DP, that she would also have a shot of voicing Jessie again. Of course that wasn't going to happen. But why did they think that Rachael Lilis would reprise Misty? For one thing, Misty has only ever appeared once over the 6 years PUSA dubbed the show, in the infamous and dreaded Mastermind special. Given that Misty no longer appears in the anime, what was Rachael Lilis supposed to reprise?

When BW started and Brock left too, it looked even more ridiculous. 90% of the older cast is now gone, so what is there for the old VA's to do again? Ash, Jessie and James, the latter two who don't even show up in most episodes anymore, are the only older characters left. As we know Meowth sadly no longer has a prior VA due to Maddie's unfortunate passing.

As for a "redub" of DP, I don't think PUSA would ever go back and record voice work for 190 completed episodes that are old news at this point.

Lastly, SOVA was obviously directed at fans of the original trio. Of course since most of the DP characters had no 4kids VA, they couldn't be considered. But even the AG characters, whenever Veronica Taylor was mentioned, nobody brought up May whatsoever. Although May's new voice was probably the best received of all the PUSA voices, the fact that Veronica Taylor was only mentioned in regards to Ash says a lot. This was basically for the Kanto/Johto cast, what happened with later characters no longer matters/

The original trio of course would never be reunited, as anyone who has been part of the fandom for 9 years would know, and the Takeshi Shudo blogs later confirmed it for everyone. Misty was never intended to return to the series even back when she originally left in 2002. This would be followed by Brock's departure, who for the most part, a lot of people felt was going to happen sooner or later.

The Johto saga marked the end of a lot of things in the anime, and had the 4kids VA's not also dubbed all of Hoenn, they would have only been associated with the first 5 years of the show. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if the 4kids voices *didn't* continue into Hoenn, then they would have *really* only been considered for the original cast.

The Pokemon anime is not aimed at 20+ year old adults who grew up with Kanto from 12 years ago, so I don't know where the belief that Misty, Charizard, 4kids, Veronica Taylor were all going to return to the series at some point. Its time to move on.

    Yes.

New people come in and out of the fandom all the time, and probably aren't aware of the "fandom history" that took place before they came to the online fandom.

Other than Dogasu, I can only think of very few other old-school members in the fandom who have been here since nearly the beginning with everything properly documented.
Trainer Yusuf and Karamazov like this.

I... agree with you. I was a member of the SOVA group on Facebook, but I left when I realized we weren't going to accomplish anything.
I do want Veronica to reprise her role as Ash, though, but I know it won't happen.

Maybe some things are better left forgotten.

But I think that you should consider doing a "fandom through the years" article or something and enter it in the christmas contest so that it'll at least be a bit more productive.

It was waaaaaaaaaaay more fun when you mentioned Gliscor everywhere than Misty xD

Also, I second Pigg's view that you should write something up properly and put it on National Bulbagraphic or something.

This is a very good telling of the events of the past. It gives great insight to newer members like me who aren't aware of that past happenings. I am in agreement with the past posters: an article on the telling of the "fandom through the years". This is something I like about you: you are a veteran, so you can tell us what the past was like.

    Thanks for reading.

I'd prefer if Dogasu did such an article. He's not as bias as I am.

One reason I always liked Dogasu is when I first came online in 2003, he's one of the people who would constantly say negative things about Johto. Just look at Dogasu's episode comparison for AG1 and see what the first line in his review was. :p

I can't recall who it was exactly, but I remember Dogasu being a bit AG supporter when it first started. Not only was he indifferent about Misty leaving, but he considered Johto as the time the anime jumped the shark.

I hate to say it, but my original fandom view was molded by Dogasu and the other old school Pokemon fans at the time. Since I came online back in 2003, this is back when the Hoenn dub was airing in the US for the first time. So my view on the fandom was shaped from when I came online and saw all the disdain for the Johto saga which shockingly matched my own. I realized I wasn't alone on my opinion.

After the Pokemopolis started to call Togepi a demon egg that leeches away Misty's personality during Johto and this somehow became a fandom meme.

Now I know what it's like to live in the past. I feel like the Johto to AG transition just happened a few years ago, when in reality it was nearly a decade ago. My my how time flies.

Good points and i agree with some things, but i wouldnt say first group doesnt have any chance to be seen again. It all depends on formula of anime, circumstances and in what direction writers may decide to take show in future.
I dont think Takeshi Shudo blogs prove much either because he stopped doing series construction ten years ago no having any influence anymore on writers plans and decisions, and he didnt mentioned anywhere how original trio will never return either just expressing his thoughts on it.

While i may be in minority in here i wouldnt completely discard possibility of original trio being reunited at end of pokemon series to emphasize better on writer intention of going back to its roots providing better closure as well potentially having benefit in attracting more of older fans toward show increasing TV ratings while keeping their main source of money(target audience).

First group of characters is usually viewed as something special in almost any show which replace characters with most anime bringing back older characters when approaching near end to better emphasize on closure serving as nice throwback to past.I fail to see why would pokemon miss on that opportunity as well.

Also way to speak in everyone name about Mastermind of mirage pokemon.I liked 10th anniversary special making sense to reunite all ex and current main characters with character interaction and story being somewhat decent.Worst part about it were voices, that i agree with but for he rest of things i dont have particularly big complaints.

Different people, different opinions.Several old school fans i met on other hand didnt found Johto as complete garbage acknowledging aside from negative points, positive sides to it too.

Personally i feel it was with Master Quest when anime was back on right track with different writing style taking place after Takeshi Shudo left during middle of Johto. It was than when Misty started to get better treatment, fillers started to decrease with arcs starting to be included etc.
Later during transition to Ag writers continued on with same writing style which started with 5th season starting to add more improvements eventually as time went on.

After the Pokemopolis started to call Togepi a demon egg that leeches away Misty's personality during Johto and this somehow became a fandom meme.
Most people i met didnt felt that way with few opinions not speaking in everyone name.
People who say that either never watched Johto forming opinion on what they heard from others or simply didnt liked how character developed becoming more mature and level headed eventually(always positive thing )allowing for some great and significant development enriching character.Misty certainly didnt lost character in Johto being still quirky, spunky, passionate about various interests and hobbies which defined her life etc.
This allowed for character getting over complex of inferiority caused by sisters, learning to be more independent and assertive becoming better battler over time which can be especially noticed in interactions with various characters like Sakura,Egan,Andreas, etc, way she handled criticism learning on mistakes along with becoming more supportive to Ash and Brock becoming closer as friends.
Further growth can be noticed in chronicles and cameos in Hoenn with big majority viewing her as fresh and intriguing character liking how she developed.I think Dogasu comment on her appearances which were highly popular describing them as way to help recover damaged ratings just further proves how people felt about character to this day wanting her back to cast because of not being done enough with her along with missing comedy and charm she brought within cast.

About Pokemopolis its well known this site tends to blow things out of proportion(just like calling May jailbait,Brock pervert who controls other people minds etc) for humor purposes not being credible source to go by.

Nice historical perspective on things. Still I don't get how that's relevent today when it's clear the VA aren't coming back and Misty's six feet under, but cool story.

or you can try your hand at fanfiction again :D
Do we really want A Day Inside SOVA though?
