Yeah, like how the majority of posts about female characters is negative, but you're never seen posting much about May. It says a lot.

Well I was here when AG was originally airing so I already posted about her character as it was happening. There's really not much to say about her at this point since she's probably never going to reappear in the show either.

DP and BW are more recent on everyone's minds so there is a lot to say about Dawn and Iris. And that other character is just brought up in random threads a lot so whatever.

Since when are you supposed to "earn" powerful pokémon? I don't see why it's so neccesary for a trainer to capture a pokémon in the first stage and then make it evolve twice, and how that would somehow be so much better than just catching the fully evolved stage. Just because it's already evolved doesn't mean it can't develop in the same way as unevolved pokémon. Or is the cliché "oh my god I'm not gonna make it oh wait what is that oh he evolved never mind I am gonna make it" super important character development I'm somehow not getting?

The mention of May made my day XD

That Harvey Dent quote from The Dark Knight comes to mind when I think of Iris.

There is a thread in the anime section right now titled "Misty making a return" which asks speculation about the character. What do you want me to do? If I have to make comparisons or talk about her than it's what I have to discuss.

DP just ended, Iris is the current main girl, and Dawn is in the middle of her cameo. Obviously people will be talking about Iris and Dawn mostly for the time being.

I see what you're saying but I think the old way of doing things might have gotten boring. Why shouldn't the writers decide to be more spontaneous and make some different decisions. It makes the show more exciting, because now, I feel like BW could throw anything our way. I do like Iris and always have. Is her development rushed and full of holes? Yes, definitely. It doesn't make me dislike her though, in fact the element of surprise they're giving us with her, only serves to make her seem more interesting and gives the show a much needed energy boost. Everyone's journey follows the same path with the same challenges along the way. Iris might leave the earliest out of all the females (probably will) but at least she'll have had the most unique storylines so far.

I think if I was 6 or so, and I saw this character getting all these super strong Pokemon without doing anything or changing, I would love them. I mean just plowing through people with no effort? What kid wouldn't love that?

But from a writing standpoint, coming off DP...it's terrible. There's being original, and then there's whatever the hell this show is doing now. I've actually caught up with BW...and I just don't GET Iris. Again if I was a kid I'd be all "omg she's super special awesome dragon girl who beats everybody!", but I want to actually SEE training and development, and she just doesn't do it for me.

How do you explain every other time it isn't a Misty thread, and Misty hasn't been mentioned yet?

Im torn on Iris tbh.
As far as character goes i like Iris quite a lot. Im enjoying in her snarky and hyperactive personality being wild and out of place girl, which adds to her uniqueness. However im disappointed with development she received so far, with barely anything being done about her dragon master goal and main mission she was sent out on journey from dragon village(Axew). I expected that we are going to see gradual growth of character bonding with Axew, together becoming stronger with effort and training leading to eventual evolution which was Iris main mission from start. But instead Axew ended up underdeveloped , with writers deciding to build up on her strength directly by giving her fully evolved Dragonite starting to make rapid power up out of nowhere.

While i can understand how position of her game counterpart(being champion and all)is responsible on good part for this with anime being tool to advertize games, i expected that writers are going to invest more effort in whole thing doing more believable and gradual growth of said character.
Now there is still time to redeem somewhat Iris development in filler arc with Dragonite capture hopefully playing part in bigger picture which would have Iris go through some significant development, but for now im anything but satisfied.

Which is probably main reason why writers can get away with it. They are aware how most small kids which make target audience are going to react same way you described it, being super excited about Iris being powerful and getting all that cool pokemon like Dragonite. But to older viewers with more refined taste, this will be probably underwhelming and disappointing being step down from DP, Ag, even original series in terms female characters are getting developed.

Why im torn on Iris still liking actual character(cant say same about story), i believe Bw is kinda sign how we have too many female characters already in this show with writers starting to run out of ideas(another one type master?). I know its unpopular opinion around here, but would much rather liked return of one of older girls with writers doing build up of her story(like Misty or May)instead of getting another new girl just to end up disappointed again.

I still remember how I liked Iris at the beginning of the series just because of the potential she had. That, unfortunately, quickly disappeared. She has a rather annoying personality and the writing behind her is so lazy. She really could have been a better character if there was more effort put into her character, but instead of having the journey result in her growth, they just skip all of that and give her power-ups to make it look like she's a strong trainer and that she has come a long way since the start of the series. It's really quite annoying and I don't see any reason to really root for Iris. She'll get accomplishments regardless of whether or not she actually worked for them just because of the writing. At this point, I'm perfectly fine with Iris having the shortest run out of the female characters. I'd much rather see a new female character with a different goal, either Contests returning or, more likely, a new sidequest from the new games, than what else they could do with Iris. Seeing Drayden defeat her would be kind of satisfying to see though.

Comparing characters or their roles is why she is brought up, same reason you usually see Brock mentioned in Cilan threads.

Also more posts about her pop up from casual fans who hadn't watched the show in years.

Misty barley got negative remarks only by people like myself back in the day. May got the most after Misty left, Dawn's skirt and Piplup was her bash fest and Iris's strange victories are a breeding ground for them. But most remarks are pretty positive. More than Ash's, that's for sure.
