I have decided that I will finally attempt 3d modeling again

I've been trying for a long time to become a proper 3d modeler. I've used 10+ programs including
1. 3dstudio Max (not free)
2. GMax (free)
3. Wings 3d (free)
4. Google Sketchup (free)
5. Hexagreat (free)
6. CB Model Pro (completely free)
7. QAvimator (semi free)
I'm going to settle down with Blender and Google Sketchup. GS is a great program for modeling locations, houses, objects and furniture and it's truly the MSPaint of 3d.
However, Blender is dizzyingly complex. The second you press the space bar, thousands of menus come up in your face with so many terms that are specific to 3d like subsurfs and nurbs.
However, Blender is free and has a lot of material for it because it's widely used. You can animate with it and model with it.
I'm not completely new to 3d though. I'm actually not bad for someone who has struggled through all of these programs. From most of them I've learned that there are planes, edges and vertexes that you can manipulate along the x, y or z axises.
I've never successfully textured anything though.
Right now, I'm trying to create an anime head.
