Reading Recommendations?

I got a new job (woo!) and it's going to require that I do some traveling for the month of August. When I fly, I like to catch up on reading, and I was wondering/hoping you could all help me out and give me a few pointers. I have pretty eclectic interests and I love nonfiction. I'll only read fiction if it's really, really good. But if you know good stuff, I'd love to hear about it.

Beyond the recommendations, one question: is Game of Thrones worth it? (Again, book, not TV series.)

Dunno. But you should try The Hunger Games.

    Lord of the Rings! 8D

    >Nonfiction

The only nonfiction books I read are about the paranormal and/or animals. If you want to know how to give basic first aid to animals, I know a few books.

I'm currently reading Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series. It's fantasy, but really, really good. Between great writing and mind-blowing awesomeness from characters, it's a great read. The first book is called Furies of Calderon.

I've read LoTR and in fact most of Tolkien's published works, although I have not read Children of Hurin. While my interests are eclectic, animal first aid doesn't really interest me (although I have read an army wilderness manual in my spare time; actually quite useful.)

Horns by Joe Hill is an excellent book.

for Nonfiction, I've recently started "The Pope's Rhinoceros" and "Death of a Gunfighter, both of which were excellent. I especially recommend the latter of the two.

My friend has read Game of Thrones (He's finishing the 3rd book at the moment) and he says that they're great.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a really great book.

Terry Pratchett. If you disagree you are wrong.

EDIT: Also, "I like nonfiction" is really...unhelpful as a criteria. Do you like cookbooks? Kama sutra guides? Anthropological books on obscure Amazon tribes?

I know it's not an especially useful thing to say, but I have really...wide-ranging interests. I like history of all kinds, I like science and have enough of a background to understand and enjoy most books published for a non-technical audience, I like politics, finance, policy, and food. And plenty more stuff. I'm really much more interested in finding good books than I am finding books about a particular topic or topics. If it's a good book, I'll grow to love the topic. And as I said, I'm well-rounded enough to read just about any type of book not produced for an expert/academic audience.

The best books I've read lately were a summary of the financial crisis (Too Big To Fail, excellent book) and a history of the rap music industry (The Big Payback, incredibly well-researched and a lot of fun to read if you like rap.)

Have you read anything by Tolstoy? I'm reading War and Peace right now, and love it. It's just kinda slow, but then again his books are like 1000 page behemoths that are written as first person perspective for multiple people in the Russian imperial age, so, yeah, understandably they're long. *fun fact: loves Russian history*

I've got one for you, if you can find it.

Look Me in the Eye--My Life with Asperger's
by John Elder Robinson. It's an excellent read, John Elder Robinson is actually the man who designed the guitars that KISS used in their shows, and he helped create some of the first electronic games. He is behind a lot of the things we think of as 'normal' these days, and no one even knows his name. Pretty cool.

John Buchan. 'The Thirty-nine Steps' is a fantastic book, and the rest of the Hannay series (Greenmantle, Mr Standfast, The Three Hostages and The Island of Sheep) are good reads too. However the first is probably the best, and I highly recommend it.

I'm a fan of books by conservative radio talk show hosts. Might you be interested in those just to kind of see what they're about?

Do you like manga? If you do, Claymore and Shrine of the Morning Mist are both great fun to read.

You should definitely stick with Game of Thrones. It's awesome.

If you're interested in history, and WWII specifically, I'd recommend 'Band of Brothers'.

A book I really enjoyed was The Year of Living Biblically. It takes a really interesting look at the bible by trying to live in the modern world following the rules set by the bible.
