To be honest I don't get the Red hype/glorification...

I beat him with my ingame team by using super effective moves against his mons. Just like every other trainer battle in the game. All he has is a high level Pikachu, he isn't that special otherwise.

Yeah. My strategy in SoulSilver was use Tyranitar equipped with the Focus Sash to EQ Pikachu, Bellossom equipped with the Bright Powder to Leaf Storm Blastoise to death (which was a gamble), use Kingdra to Surf Charizard to death, Togetic to Aura Sphere Snorlax, Ampharos to zap Lapras (with some help from Togetic again), and then Typhlosion to burn down Venusaur (which took a few tries thanks to Sludge Bomb).

Of course, my team was incredibly underleveled compared to Red's at this point. I wanna say the highest level I had at the time was 65.

My Pokémon were 15-20 level below his and he wasn't that hard to me either. By the way, speedrunning isn't even the normal playstyle that was intended for the game ( no time for super effective hits? really?), of course it would be reasonable harder. But the same could be said about Cynthia in DPPt as well due to her mixed types team. I am just sick of the Red glorification. His Snorlax was hard to beat in the original games, but not in HGSS.

@Prof. Lugion - His highest was 65 too. The rest...are far lower. His insane strategy: lead with Snorlax. Rock Climb, Protect, Rock Climb again and hope Pikachu kills itself with Volt Tackle. Switch to Shuckie. Blastoise comes out. Protect then Max Revive Snorlax. Bring it out as Shuckie dies and Protect. Pop an X-Sp.Def. Then stall with Hyper Potions, praying for no criticals. Doesn't really matter if you get frozen by Blizzard, though you can Protect if you aren't. At half health you can stop; the best case is that he uses Hydro Cannon. Hyper Beam and kill him. Lapras is looming; shift into Wooper. YOU MUST HEAL TYPHLOSION, EVEN GIVEN THE SMALL HEALTH DROP. 1. Lapras will probably kill you otherwise. 2. You use Eruption next to deal over half his health. Brine will take you down low and the Hail, but won't kill you. Revive Snorlax. Send it out after you die. If you caught it with Thick Fat, you may be able to tank the Blizzard (unsure). Either way you Max Revive Typhlosion and Eruption to take off the last of Lapras' health. Snorlax comes out, DO NOT SHIFT. Let it come out and switch into Sentret. It will attack with Crunch or Giga Impact and gets Sticky Barb attached. That plus hail kills it quickly. Stalling time. Switch to Shuckie and revive Sentret. Switch to Sentret and revive Wooper. Switch to Wooper and Max Revive Snorlax. Switch to Typhlosion and Eruption. Giga Impact can be a troll here if it survives, dunno what's supposed to happen but either way it's dead that round. Send in Snorlax. Protect. Revive Shuckie. Flare Blitz will probably be pulled which kills you in one hit if your defense is low. Keep on stalling if you can, and if you die send in Shuckie. Protect. Then revive Snorlax. Protect. Now past half health, you'll need to get lucky and hope he doesn't use Flare Blitz at the wrong time, or it'll put him into Full Restore range. It's really iffy. Max Revive Typhlosion and hope for the best. If you somehow manage to take it down, Venusaur is thankfully a free pass with Eruption.

Seems simple when broken down, but so much can go wrong and spell GG. Short version of it going well: Go to around 22:30

@TeddiUrsa; - Well for one, you only use one Pokemon during a speedrun because it's the fastest way to go about it - two exceptions being FRed because you need Zapdos not to get bodied (and you eventually rotate out Blastoise), and this fight here where all six have a role to play. Second, that did have a double meaning. In addition to movepool limitations, the super effective message takes time to display, so it's preferable to kill with a move that is not if you can do so in the same number of turns, factoring in PP management. Third, fuck normalicy. Fourth, real men play set - also preferred during a speedrun because shift is unnecessary in 99% of battles and takes up so much time. Fifth, yeah, he kinda deserves it as far as speedrunning is concerned - in Gold and Crystal, if you don't freeze Venusaur with Feraligatr's Ice Punch and get time to setup, you lose so much time. Then you have to setup on Snorlax or Espeon, and probably die trying.
