At least due to the amount of resets you must do

Whereas every other game has you do starter stat resets that don't take too long, you need to reset for a Lv.6 Nidoran Male 7-8 minutes in because Pikachu is an awful starter. And yes, a male. Females don't get Horn Attack or Thrash and have lower attack. Bad bad bad. Then you have a ridiculous final battle consisting of using X-Special to raise your defense to survive Earthquake. And yes, you did just read that. That's how fucked Gen 1 is.

Case in point: werster has been 24-hour marathoning, mostly playing Yellow, and has still not gotten a run beyond...I dunno. Furthest I've seen was Misty. Shit is bad, though.

What was important back then was that kiddies would buy the same Pokemon Kanto game, so they just put a Pikachu and all starters to make it anime-like. It's quite probable that if it were not for Yellow, the franchise could have stopped there. AKA no Gens 2,3,4,5,6 and ofc, no BMGf!...

If you care about IVs and EVs during clearing the game (which I guess from worrying which pokemon to get at beginning) then it's fucked up. Beating the game shouldn't be crossed with proper EV training because it's simply hard as hell. You should pick either two kinds of pokemon and train them to about 70 in whole game, then it easy to pass. EV training and strategy making comes after you cleared all trainers and have access everywhere, that's much easier and much less time taking.

@Infinity Edge; - I dunno what you read, but that's just absolutely wrong. It is absolutely critical that the Nidoran Male have good *DVs, otherwise you will not be able to complete the speedrun. *Stat EXP isn't as important. And actually, that's all that gets used in the speedrun. Level 70 though, that takes too much time and too many non-mandatory fights.

But srsly, every stat matters. Too little Attack, and you waste time in general. Same goes for too little Special, with added chance to be randomly killed on a damage range as well as making the run impossible to complete in extreme cases. Not enough Speed, some Pokemon go before you and waste time and you'll probably get killed at Misty. Not enough Defense, you die in the last battle at the latest.

See this writeup for a shortlist of what can go wrong, as well as watching it on Youtube with commentary.

I know the stats matter, but they do not for clearing the game. To clear the game, the easiest way is to have pokemon that outlevel your opponent and using status & hp heal items since it's allowed.
Why not train your pokemon for competitive fights after you clear the game when it's easier?

@Infinity Edge; - This has nothing to do with competitive battling, wow. And it has nothing to do with just clearing the game - it's about clearing as fast as possible. WHICH REQUIRES GOOD STATS. Also, the true pro items are X-Items.
