Grinding to Level 15 with my newly caught Bidoof as a bit of a chore. I fought some wilds to get it up to snuff with all the other trained Pokemon moseying around this part of Sinnoh, but after I sent them all home packing (including the first moving trainer without a pattern in a Pokemon game), I had to go back to the wilds, which, by this time, were getting to be quite the annoyance. Luckily, I managed to time it so that when I beat the last gym trainer, it evolved. Everything in between that and the coal mine were unnoteworthy. No witty lines, no notable encounters (besides the one), no captures, final destination. Until I reached the coal mine. When I got there, I started using Rollout a lot more. It came in handy against the Geodudes, but it would be even handier later. Defense Curl helped with it, too.
Some guy outside of the gym warned me that you should take as many Pokemon to a gym battle as possible. What do I do? Dump Starly in the box (had to happen sometime!) and charge in using only Bidoof! Again, I used Defense Curl/Rollout on the rocks I encountered. Unaware is awesome, by the way. It makes it so that those turns they spend using Defense Curl, thinking they'll become tougher against you, are effectively wasted.
Boss: Roark
For starters, I Defense Curled 5 times, used a Potion, used it a sixth time, then started Rollout...only to miss on the second hit! I decided not to reset and just Defense Curled again (wait, does it still give the boost to Rollout if you have max defense?), and rolled on Roark. Unfortunately, I didn't get a clean sweep off with it. Three turns were spent killing Geodude, and two on Onix. The mortal man tried to heal Onix, only to walk straight into an even stronger Rollout. Though one just as strong as before would've killed it too, as the Potion didn't restore all its HP.
Ironically, the reason why I was going with the Rollout strategy (rather than Water Gunning those pathetic rocks to death) Cranidos, dropped to two Water Guns. It tried to get off a Pursuit, and did only 5 damage.
So yeah. That's kinda it. But what do you expect from the first gym leader?
