Game Reflections: Metal Gear Solid

So, I finally got around to finshing MGS. The Essential Collection was a steal at forty bucks, so I just had to snag it! It just took me until winter break to start, OKAY. It was actually pretty fun, but gameplay is often seems artificially hard, though this is pretty common in games before the 2000s. Things that are annoying about this game: Forced viewpoints, having to shoot every guard a set number of times, fighting Metal Gear Rex, having to retry the jeep chase 9001 times, getting hit by claymore mines. Things I liked about this game: hammy acting, finding ways to launch guards into the blast furnace, spotting factual fallacies (Genome Soldiers definitely don't have IQs of 180). Overall, the game was pretty cool. Expository scenes and codec calls were often boring and filled with important information you were liable to miss due to skipping on the player's part. Despite its flaws, the game did have some extremely fun moments. However, I came out of the experience somewhat dissatisfied. A game that has many great moments shadowed by repetitive and "realistic" gameplay has a ways to go.
