After perusing through Kotaku I came upon this article. Which led me to remember the times as an only child in a single parent family trying to get my mum to play card games, board games or video games together. It was rare that she would want to play with me, but I remember one striking time that she did play a video game with me, and it was the only time that I can ever remember looking up to her as a child. The only time I thought that she was a person with hidden depths and amazing abilities. The only time I thought she was "cool".

It was Sonic 2. I don't remember my age but I was around 5-7 years old. I was playing as Tails and she was Sonic. I never could never play too far into the game, I died frequently at Mystic cave or Hilltop zone. As we played together I was amazed to watch as this woman who I thought had never played this game before doing very well. Eventually we had made it to Oil Ocean. I was amazed, I had never seen this level before and I was able to experience it all thanks to her. I felt a strange appreciation for my mum. Of course, we died to the boss on Oil Ocean and she promptly stopped playing because she had "things to do". We still had a continue though, but as me playing Sonic solo I promptly lost all of the lives scrambling around the level.

I wish I'll be able to do things differently than my mum if I ever had kids.

I think I once got my dad to play a game with me...

Or rather, I got him to play a game.

It was some logic puzzle game that I was having trouble with. I asked my dad if he could help, and he got so incredibly annoyed by the problem that he took my seat on the computer.
