Pokemon English VS. Japanese - Mistranslations! (How Long Were They Rivals?)

English:

"This is my grandson. He's been your rival since you were a baby."

Japanese:

Kana:
こいつは わたしの まご
きみの おさななじみであり
ライバル である

Literal translation:
"This guy is my grandchild.
He's your childhood friend
and rival.
"

Here's an example of a localization taking liberties just because it can. Liberties that make zero sense.

Here I am, imagining Red fighting with Green over a pacifier. Or competing with each other to see who soils their diapers faster. TPCi, was that what you were going for?!

    Judging by that?

I would have to say yes

It paints their relationship in a different light....he'd be closer to being Cheren than Silver.

In the end, Cheren is basically a Green that have a (nice) change of personality during the storyline of the games he appears in. Funny because I see a lot of hate towards Cheren, but for some reason, people love to praise the jerk, I mean, Green.

"rivals since you were babies" is obviously an intentional exaggeration.

To be fair, Green did sort of mellow out in the remakes of Gen II. He's mostly static, though, I agree. I prefer his anime counterpart in that regard.

An intentional exaggeration that doesn't need to be there, because it *wasn't* originally there. It also fails to mention that Red and Green were once friends during their childhood, the *only* mention of that ever in-game. It doesn't expand on anything - in fact, it leaves stuff out.

I think they made this change so they can tie it in with Ash and Gary's relationship in the first season of the anime, considering I prefer seeing Blue/Green as a childhood friend of Red's as opposed to a cocky and competitive rival like Gary was to Ash, which is why I think they made this change since the anime was known to most people in the US at the time.

A friendly rivalry is possible: Brendan and May, Lucas/Dawn and Barry, Hilbert/Hilda and Bianca/Cheren, Nate/Rosa and Hugh; not to mention duos from other series, like Sora and Riku, and Sonic and Knuckles.

Maybe. Satoshi and Shigeru's first appearance did seem like a first meeting until their rivalry/relationship was retconned to be more like their game counterparts (in terms of history).

Sure, but the point here is that Green is never nice to you in the games to ever indicate that. You would assume it was a bitter rivalry all along without that information.

I do agree that it was an unnecessary change, but I don't think it helps Green/Blue's development. I know it states in the manual that Red started getting interested in Pokemon once Green/Blue stopped spending time with him, but it doesn't really state why in either the manual or games Green/Blue stopped hanging out of with Red. If it involved being a trainer, it doesn't explain his jerkish behavior.

It leaves for more accurate speculation though. Speculation based on 100% pure fact is always cool. Personally, I'm not one for multiple choice.

The European and English manuals contradict each other by giving two different accounts. I don't have the Japanese manual, but that one might shed some light or at least give us more accurate info. The European source said that Green started to find competition in Red because they were the same height... Riiight.

^That sounds pretty silly but its not TOO far off from the English manual.

And to be fair, back then, manuals were more or less the portals when it came to understanding the gist of things that the game itself would be guilty of leaving out.

Well, the European manual says Red is 10-years-old, whilst our manual says Red is "11-years-old". *shrugs* I think it's pretty different. It'd be pretty nice if someone had the Japanese manual so we can confirm what the Japanese scenario writers had in mind for the backstory.

@FANG-TAN; Speaking of Red's age, is there any info about the other main character's ages? I remember reading something about Touko and Touya being older than the previous MCs, but I am unsure about the veracity of the said statement. Sorry, it is a bit off-topic.

Unfortunately, there's no specific information on any of the other ages.

They did say Touko and Touya were older than previous MCs, but that's pretty vague...

You know , The only thing Ash ever had close to a ''Childhood friend'' is Gary !
Ash been to Pallet Town for so long yet we didn't see any other childhood friend of Ash .
I wonder , Was Ash friendless during his childhood ?
Considering Gary was a ''Childhood Rival'' rather then childhood friend !

"Since Babies" doesn't actually mean they are rivals since they were babies. I have taken it as them being childhood friends, which is apt for the translation. Sure, if you take the literal meaning, they're doing something they needn't do. But it still didn't do any harm.

It's easily taken as an exaggeration, yeah. The problem is, they never mention that they were ever friends. Would love it if they mentioned it outside a manual that is likely inaccurate.
