Time to focus on my interpretation of the character for my Manga Project, to take my mind off the Movie 16 stuff. Here's some rough sketches, I really need to practice drawing Mewtwo, since I plan on him being a recurring character some time after his original saga.

RGBY Mewtwo

FRLG+ Mewtwo (with cape)

Original saga
The Mewtwo saga from the anime is kept pretty much the same, with details from the CD Drama "Birth of Mewtwo" being highly integrated, rather than using the anime's ten-minute condensed version of it. It chronicles Dr. Fuji's ambitions, Mewtwo's friendship with the human clone Ai, and her death. I didn't draw Mewtwo as a child, so here:

It keeps true to Shudo's version of the story. However, no memory wipes will happen. After Satoshi's petrification and being restored by the Pokemon's tears, Mewtwo will somewhat remember Ai's existence (unlike the anime, where this is never indicated), but it'll be very subtle memories that he will remain curious about (details like her name are still a blank). This part of the saga focuses on Mewtwo learning that despite being a copy (not being "real"), all living beings exist in the same way which they don't need to prove, and that not all humans are scumbags like the Rocket Gang.

Some time after conquering the Elite Four, Satoshi meets Mewtwo once again on Pures Rock, a story that loosely adapts the Mewtwo TV Special, in order for it to be concluded within Kanto. So, Pures Rock (which is this canon's equivalent of the Unknown Dungeon), is moved from Jouto to near the Sekiei Plateau, in Kanto. Therefore, Mewtwo will become an urban legend in Kanto instead of Jouto. This part of the saga focuses on Mewtwo learning that, despite being a copy, he has the right to live in the same world as the originals.

FRLG - BW2 (Currently just ideas)
Sakaki returns, and plots to control Deoxys to achieve unknown goals (could it possibly have something to do with Silver...?). In its Speed Form, Satoshi proves to be no match holding the Mythical Pokemon back. However, Mewtwo returns to help Satoshi. Mewtwo will appear with its cape as it did in its anime cameos, and the cape will become a defining article of clothing for it. By this time, it has traversed the world and gained a new perspective of the world, and credits its change to Satoshi. And, it will identify with Deoxys in relation to his previous partnership with Sakaki. At the conclusion of the saga, he decides to join Satoshi, as an aloof ally, in the shadows. However, it'll only help out when the situation calls for it.

Because of that, he'll also appear along with Satoshi in the HeartGold/SoulSilver saga and the Black 2/White 2 saga's World Tournament crossover arc. I wish to touch upon the current XY form in the latter, where he will help Satoshi and the other protagonists deal with Genesect and the "Original Dragon" (I put this in quotes for a reason).

Reason for Awakening
Mewtwo's awakening will definitely involve the full restoration of memories about Ai and the realization that he killed a misguided man with good intentions, and struggles with the guilt. This is possible as Mr. Fuji, Dr. Fuji's brother, is still alive and is able to give him the details. Since Mewtwo's story heavily revolves around the value of life, his awakening will be triggered during an event where he finds himself on the border of life and death.

Will there be two Mewtwo?
I'll wait until the release of XY for that. Suppose the version differences of XY has the Game Mewtwo awaken in two different ways via multiple timelines, and suppose also that Mr. Fuji (game) gets an expanded role tying him to a completely different organization from Rocket Gang (doesn't have to be Flare Gang). That would be one reason to allude to a second Mewtwo, but how do I keep true to the original Mewtwo saga and stay true to the games at the same time? Unlike Yuyama and Sonoda, I care about continuity, so I won't be pulling a Movie 16. But, hypothetically, what if they did? Thankfully, unlike the anime, I've written Dr. Fuji and Mr. Fuji as two separate characters that are brothers, and the idea of a second Mewtwo existing is very possible in my canon. I would be keeping true to both the original Mewtwo saga, the games, and bridging the two game versions together. This is *only* if version differences calls for multiple timelines.

If version difference call for it, I'll add on to Mr. Fuji's backstory to include the creation of a second Mewtwo. He, like Dr. Fuji, aspires to find the secret to Mew's eternal life force in order to resurrect Ai through cloning. They go their separate ways after Dr. Fuji decides to work for Rocket Gang. Hearing about the Mewtwo Project from his brother, which was halfway done, he meets Mew and its newborn. His brother's hypothesis was wrong: Mew's life-source is dormant and it'll only be triggered by splicing the genes of a live specimen. This Mewtwo will awaken in a different way to the original Mewtwo. This backstory can also be expanded to include whatever organization may be tied to Mr. Fuji in the XY story. If there really is a need to have a second Mewtwo, the original Mewtwo will part ways with Satoshi to find his "cousin" in Kalos.

Techniques
サイコキネシス | Psychokinesis | Psychic
破壊光線 | Hakai Kousen | Hyper Beam
自己再生 | Jiko Saisei | Recover
スピードスター | Speed Star | Swift
シャドーボール | Shadow Ball
金縛り| Kanashibari | Disable
念力 | Nenriki | Confusion

(Best Wishes 2)
サイコブレイク | Psycho Break | Psystrike

When Mewtwo regenerates (Recover) from major injuries, he gains a power boost (comparable to the zenkai boosts from Toriyama's Dragon Ball series). I may make it temporary, unlike the zenkai, though.

Semi-Finalized Scripts (thanks to Dracoflare for being a beta reader for these!)

The scripts that I've made other than this contains unique spoilers that will ruin the surprise of the reboot. Since this is practically a replica of what happens in the original Mewtwo saga, I think I should share it (this will probably be unfamiliar to people anyway, seeing as a good number of fans never listened to the radio drama and only watched the badly dubbed movie). There's more that happens before these chapters regarding the creation of Mewtwo, but I haven't written them yet as they have to accommodate my own deviations to the anime's plot.

CHAPTER ??: Mewtwo and Ai

CHAPTER ??: The World’s Strongest Pokemon.

CHAPTER ??: The Start of a Counterattack!

Question, regarding your drawing, how long have you been practicing perspective and drawing characters from different angles? I imagine that'll be a bit of a challenge once you start the tablet phase of drawing, also how long do you typically take on your lineart?

I don't know if it's necessarily a good idea to keep bringing Mewtwo back in every generation, as it were. Wouldn't it get repetitive to see it save the day? More importantly, why should Mewtwo awaken while fighting Genesect or the Original Dragon? Wouldn't it make more sense to wait for the culmination of the story in the XY chapter?

I'm been drawing since god knows when, but I didn't get into perspectives until I began high school, so I say about seven years of practicing the area of perspective. I practice sporadically though - I feel like this project gives me an incentive to get better at it. :)

Pokemon is also vastly different from the art style I usually draw with (which is, kind of in-line with Noiji Itou if you've ever heard of her), so I'm trying to adjust using these character sketches as an opportunity.

Depending on the character, sketches with just pencil probably takes six to ten minutes (I don't keep track of time, sometimes I stop and do things in-between like eat and put on music). Inking is a relatively fast process for me, I definitely know that takes only a few minutes for me, tops, depending how much black spots there are (I imagine it'll take even longer with colored pages once I go digital).

Well, it's a way to limit the use of Satoshi (I don't want him to be a glory hog). When both of them appear, it will be during a crisis involving legendary Pokemon, and Mewtwo's power will be portrayed to be on-par with them (I also feel that this is a way to challenge its previous worldview, as it's no longer the strongest Pokemon). So, it wouldn't really resolve matters, but it will serve to even-out the playing field. The real players that will save the day will be the corresponding protagonists at the end of it all.

You bring up a good point, I may put off his full awakening until the XY chapter, depending on the game's take on the awakening. My current scenario kind of involves... well, Ai herself giving Mewtwo the new form. It's hard to explain, because she's still dead. Either way, he will definitely unlock his lost memory within the PWT arc (right now, I plan to have Mr. Fuji appear here as well), as that will give him a reason to bid farewell to his friend (Satoshi agrees to help Mewtwo find the answer to his missing memory by letting Mewtwo accompany him in his travels, and I plan to retire him after the BW2 Chapter).

Perhaps I could make it a brief transformation, which is later checked on by Shigeru/Orchid, that somehow inspires him to travel to Kalos (if there was a second Mewtwo, that would admittedly be a good incentive)? A prelude to an awakening? Hm, I don't think any of this will be finalized until XY is released, to be honest...

The question is if it really needs to happen three times. In regard to the World Tournament, there will be many strong trainers there to take on Team Plasma, so is Mewtwo really needed?

Either way, he will definitely unlock his lost memory within the PWT arc (right now, I plan to have Mr. Fuji appear here as well),
But why should Mr. Fuji appear in Unova?

    That's a good question.

I've thought up this version of the "Original Dragon" to be of immense power that several different legendary Pokemon cannot take it on alone (especially if, say, it's not really the Original Dragon, but something more terrifying...). Do you suppose I might be going overboard with the scale? Since this is intended to put most of the Gen I-IV characters to rest, I thought it would be fitting.

But why should Mr. Fuji appear in Unova?
Let's just say the World Tournament is going to be something that serves somewhat of a different purpose than it does in the games... though Katsura and Mr. Fuji are good buddies, and Katsura's invitation will be enough of an incentive to come along, I believe.

Don't worry, since this is a reboot rather than a remake, there will be plenty of original storylines (though taking basis from what happens in the game). :) FRLG and HGSS will be the most original, while the first BW will probably be the most similar to the games. Even the Kanto storyline has deviations, so you won't have to worry about that.

As for Pokemon teams, I'm going to have fun with those.
